I’m going to say two things which you might regard as almost heresy. The first is that a series 1 CX is a better car than any DS, as it should be after 20 years of development and refinement of the systems employed in both the DS and the SM. The second is that the Douvrin all alloy OHC engine fitted to the CX after 1979 was a real improvement over the much heavier, cast iron, OHV engine which was originally installed and which was a version of the engines installed in the last DS’s. It was about 50 kilos lighter and improved both performance, steering response, and fuel efficiency. On the downside, it’s not as long lived as the earlier unit but is still a reliable, high mileage engine which only requires a little careful attention in its maintenance. Of course, the DS has the cachet of being the first in Citroens fully realised concept of future automobiles and I completely understand why anyone would think it the ultimate Citroen. Nevertheless, compared to a CX it’s rather agricultural in its performance and somewhat noisy.
