Are you hiding your Korean dialect? | Street Interview

I interviewed native Korean speakers in Seoul (연남동), and asked them if they speak any Korean dialects - and if so, to say something in that dialect. Here are all of their fun dialect expressions!

I've seen many Korean youtubers ask to English speaking people if they have/can speak any dialect. However, it's quite rare to see non-Korean youtuber do the the same experiment to Koreans! Keep up the good work and I enjoyed the video. I cracked up a lot 😄😄

I don't know if you heard it, but BTS has a song titled "Paldogangsan" where they sing/rap in their different dialects. The members are from Busan, Daegu, Ilsan, Gwacheon, Gwanju, and Geochang.

Whenever I hear 사투리 I always think of the BTS song Paldogangsan. It’s such a fun song exploring each of the members dialects and hometowns

I feel like Billy was being quite careful with the way he phrased these questions. I have found that people can get self-concious and even offended if you ask them about their accent/dialect.

I've lived in Chungnam over ten years. If I have time, I'll go to Seoul to study Korean on a Saturday because where I live is too small to study Korean in a hagwon. I went to one Korean hagwon in Gangnam and started with a speaking placement test. After I spoke, the teacher said to me 'Are you from Chungnam?' to which I replied, 'yes', but was a little curious how she knew. Then I got put in my class. I introduced myself and the teacher said to me, 'are you from Chungnam?', and I replied 'yes' and asked how they could tell. She told me it's because I say 유 rather than 요 at the end of my sentences. As I then became conscious of it, I realised that you use fewer facial muscles saying 유 rather than 요. It just feels more comfortable.

I did a whole presentation for my Korean class about 사투리. My two favorite were, one as said in the video "거시기" from 전라도, and "친구아이가?" from 경상도. "친구아이가?" is something you would say when asking for a favor like, "aren't we friends?" or "what are friends for?" The person would then respond, "다이가."

This is fascinating. It felt like asking Americans to talk in their accents & city slang/dialect 😍
It was nice to see more of the nitty gritty culture of the language! I ADORE accents & dialect in English, so this was such a treat! 😂🥰

I am not gonna lie, I’ve only been able to notice Jeju or Busan accent but the rest are hard to tell apart. But I’ve also only been in Korea for 3 months now so I guess it takes time😂

Actually some linguists would classify jeju as a separate language instead of a dialect.

Sometimes when I listen to Korean music or watch a K drama I can tell that's a different dialect than Seoul's, but I haven't any clue what region it's from. I've looked up Korean singers after I've heard the song .... And sure enough they were from a different region and not from Seoul.

There's this one that is used in variety shows. I think is Busan Satori "삻아 있네!"😅

That would be "살아있네," and it's famous because it was used in a popular movie (범죄와의 전쟁).
