I was at this show. After this song I was almost in shock over what I had just heard. The raw emotion can never be captured in a video recording. Today would have been his 65th birthday. RIP . You left an indelible memory in body.
Couldn't agree more! I was at this show as well and was in complete awe when this ended. I turned to the person next to me and asked "what the f#!@K was that?"
Was at the show in D.C. RFK, totally blown away by Brent.
HAy now Flynn cheers yeah Brent's voice is simply,.... well just .... is .... Love this . See you in Boulder Peace bro greetings from SLC
I was about 30 feet to the right of the guy holding the flag. Amazing show! My 4 favorite shows that year were Hampton 10-8 and 10-9, this show, and then Buffalo 7-4.
The whole tour you could feel that raw emotion. Gives me chills every time I hear it
I listen to this sparingly, because it literally rattles my insides and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I feel that "real love" every time.
I didn't meet my daughter until she was 22. The first song I played for her was i will take you home. We both cried.
I just heard it for the first time and I feel you 100%!
Yes indeed. Teary-eyed and full of love is good!
It has always struck a special nerve in me. Never got to see the Dead, but this song will always be very special to me. Specifically this version.
Yes, I'm with you on that note.
Jesus Christ, you can understand why everyone was so depressed after Brents death, look at how much energy this guy brought to these huge audiences, reminds me of early pigpen stuff on the energy scale, a real celebration of their music. He was fucking amazing
Mr. Tulip Preach on brother. What a guy!
Brent infused a magic into Dead, that no other keyboardist could into the band and his vocals brought in an entirely new pep to the existing array. Maan he was God Send for Dead. RIP bro . The world misses ya.
True Bro! This song is the "Dead" @ one of their best!
Ya, and all the ignorant neo hippies did nothing but rip on him.
All my brothers (4 of them) myself and my sister absolutely loved Brent!!! His passion and energy never failed to suck you in. So joyful, we loved to get blown away especially since we're from Philly! Miss you Brent!!!
Brent brings us to church...
Elli Jelli AMEN!!!
I totally agree with you on that. He sure did pour his entire heart and soul into his music!!!
Cory Swartz yes he did and that’s hard to find.. Brent felt it and when he played with Jerry they both clicked ..
I love Jerry's smile during Brent's sermon.
🗽🐢🎰🎨🌹💈🐙😍🔮
It sort of bums me out when I have read or have heard that Brent felt that Deadheads never liked him and that he never really felt accepted as a full-fledged member of the GD since he was the "new guy". Too bad he isn't around today to read some of the comments about him here on CZcams because I think it is pretty clear that the majority of Deadheads loved him and always missed him and what he brought to the band after he was gone.
Totally agree with ya man!:))
hammer meet nail
He had some really big shoes to fill. Brent was actually replacing two members, Keith and Donna. Fans still hadn't forgotten Pig Pen either. Many of us, well, at least I, didn't really know what we had until he was gone. It was too easy to leave a show like this thinking, "Brent did a great job tonight, but I still miss Pig." Meanwhile, Brent was the best keyboard player that they ever had, and was an amazing singer...
In deed, I agree wholehearted with you. Thx a million for that comment
Amen. Some of my favorite Dead stuff involved him
I love Brent. Best Keyboardest for the Dead in my opinion . Fuckin love that dude man
Timothy Peters he was the best out there at the time
Best overall but I can't knock on Keith from late 71 through 77.
@@davidr1676 my fave, Keith all day long
RIP Brent! Never got the chance to see GD, but you can feel the pain in his voice and the love in his heart. i know his love will not fade away
Well I guess I don’t have to type it since you said exactly what I was going too. 👍🏽⚡️ 🎹 ❤️😀
I hope Brent knows how much we love him, and you know our love will not fade away. I'm not a religious dude, but I like to imagine Jerry and Brent jamming in heaven, while pigpen sings the blues, and Keith lays down some jazzy piano lines. That would be heaven for me. Smoke a joint with Jesus and listen to Jerry for eternity.
+Grateful Gamer Jesus has a bong, dude.
right there with ya brotha... Perfect description
I all ways LOVED BRENT AND U CAN PLAINLY SEE HOW MUCH JERRY RESPECTED HIM IN EARLY 80s JERRY WAS ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF STAGE THAN MOVED RIGHT NEXT TO HIM AND THEY FED OFF EACH OTHER WHEN JERRY WOULD LOOK AT BRENT AND SMILE IT BROUGHT SHIVERS UP MY SPINE. BRENT'S ENERGY IS UNMATCHED
Perfect comment
Definitely@@chrisblasczyk8224
Takes them awhile to pull through....that look of confusion on Jerry's face when brent starts going off is so priceless... then he brings it full circle; Jerry's face lights up and the band is suddenly mind blowing...the real love comes through. Truly a great one
I was right there with you. Watching Jerry's reaction was priceless!
Great to see Jerry DANCING (around 10:15) at a Dead concert!---that's exactly how the band made us feel all time. It's like the chef got a taste of the dessert!
What a romantic time!!!! Sometimes you'd be dancing and you'd meet people. People talked to each other. It was cliquey sure, but not hyper cliquey like now. The love of my life came and danced with me at one these shows, someone I never met before, was from another state and we just clicked. It was wonderful.
It's the 30th anniversary of Brent's death today. (7/26/1990 - 7/26/2020).
9:00 - 12:22 should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an example of true passion on stage, delivering music straight to the fans. That is all!
The greatest years of the Dead , Jerry and Brent clicked fantastic together .for me the dead were never the same .Brent brought so much energy
The Brent Mydland years were my favorite grateful dead years, love the vocals and songs he adds.
I am a product of the Brent years I've listened to other members of the band but on tour I see nothing but Brandt and phenomenal phenomenal belong to the band
His passion in this is so moving, I feel him to my bones!
Can't Disagree..
RIP Brent RIP Jerry You will always be loved
quartzimaging what he said...^
bob E D Hell yeah!!
+quartzimaging Amen
I was in the crowd, they left magic hanging in the air that night...and it’s still there
⚡️💀🌹
Of the over 300 shows I was fortunate enough to have attended, this one goes down as one of my favorites. This right here is a religious experience, plain and simple!
Jeff Felderman AMEN, Brother!!!
I remember tripping so hard at this show
I had read the 'new testament' a few times "looking for 'some' answer", then I heard all the music that my uncle(made me think of another song'), They, were saying the same thing..., jesus said? My uncle, like my dad, said... "There is no god..., I guess cause of the fairy tales, or tradition? I will stand for the music! In Jesus's day... What could be said to the people, that "they" could understand?... Once, my Uncle said to me... "You have a knack for saying in 10,000 words, that most people, in one sentence... I said; "obviously, I was trying to describe a few pictures... "if a picture paints a thousand words"... "Peace To Those... Who Deserve it ;-) And, Hope for those who don't. After all, if you know you are going to be stoned... Guess the point is... Try to have as few people possible, to have the urge... To pick up a rock!
Do you have any pics or anything from these shows? Or what were ayour top 5 or something??
Church for sure!
I never really dug the Dead when I had the opportunity. Had lots of friends that were into them, but I just never really heard them. After watching the Amazon documentary, I decided that if someone could snuggle with an eel then they deserve to be listened to. I made myself listen to them for a few weeks. Now I can't seem to stop listening to this version of this song. Phenomenal.
You should of went to a show. A unbelievable experience.
You missed an incredible experience. They could be great and not so great but when they were great there was no one else who could take you so high in the universe.
Better late than never. The music is timeless.
SummerNights & Neon lights I never made it inside the stadium I heard them from the outside but I know that it’s nothing like being inside the crowd and I was only 13 years old and my Mother never listened to them until I started and I will never get enough of them they tore up the stage and they were absolutely phenomenal
The Dead are one of those bands that you can listen to at a young age and it doesn’t make sense then it does at a much later point in life. The Dead is one of those bands that always finds you at some point.
No script, no rehearsal, no director could imitate the pure amazing band --> crowd, crowd--> band sparkling energy felt here. I've watched this clip over the years numerous times...each time - goosebumps, smiles and all out joy. Got on the bus a couple years after Brent's passing and his shows, are still some of my favorites. Thank you, for a real good time.
Miss these days so much. The energy was electric
Phil playing that sneaky bass.
brent is the man. plus, he's rocking a gnarly beard and wearing a gold watch to top it all off
Jerry looks over and everyone realizes it's Dead o'clock..
Brent brought it, night in and night out. Took a lot of critical flak for his voice for some reason, but I love it.
How could anyone criticize that voice? It’s just amazing. Despite his addiction, he was able to bring it every night.
Brent. I get emotional every time I see video of him. He was the first keyboard player I saw the Grateful Dead with in 1987, and I am so grateful I got to see as many shows as I did with him. "That's real love, Baby."
Great version...I wish Jerry and Brent were still with us. Jerry's smile at 10:41 is priceless.
I was at that show, WOW!!! Wish I could relive that moment, this world need more DeadHeads.
Little emphasizes the Driving force Brent could be than watching Jerry in the background rocking back and forth with a huge smile on his face
Brent Mydland - the man that played/sang like his very life was on the line, every time. Incredbile.
His insecurity got to him. He was one of the better musicians for sure. This was a pretty toxic time around the dead as certain camps starting to form. It was well on its way to going over the falls by the late 80s however 91 summer tour was on fire.
Jerry is thinking, "Where was this in rehearsal?" Haha
Seriously though, Brent brought the energy. He's severely missed.
Love watching Jerry crack up and smile at Brent at the 10:18 mark.
My fav part, imagine looking over and seeing that if you were brent lol ☺
If that don’t make you smile I don’t know what will
is there anything better than this? RIP Brent
By far the best blow away Ever! I was at this show... On the field and it was hot as hell that day. As soon as this song started there was a slight breeze. When he got to the part where he says to open your hand... the breeze got stronger... or might have been the 3 hits of acid I took... But I'm pretty sure there really was a breeze that came through :D
Some of these songs were so ahead of their time, that the only ones to know it was the band itself. I miss Brent. Helluva talented guy
Hands down this is the best version of this song. And I’ve listened to a lot of them.
THE POWER OF BRENT COMPELS ME
Brent was saw awesome. They way Jerry and Brent meshed and played off each other. Super sad and tragic they're gone way too soon.
in a lot of ways I never fully loved the grateful dead until Brent joined....incredible gritty voice....you can tell even Jerry knew this was the final piece - he'll often look over at Brent and smile so naturally
Jerry smiles!!!:)
This is the best recording of this tune by far. Brent was on fire this night at JFK stadium, singing and playing. This is on the crimson, white and indigo disc for those you weren’t fortunate enough to be there. One of my favorite shows. Everyone was so fired up when this closed the first set
Probably the most beautiful performance I’ve seen. Only wish I had been old enough to experience this. Never another Dead!
Out of all their performances, this is tops.
I was born in 88! Tho I wish I was a 1 y/o lot kid at this show!
In 2007 I saw BW and Rat-dog with Derek truck allman bros, I honestly was just a band wagon fan, to young to understand but I knew I wanted to understand I promise. This was in Mansfield, MA at the Tweeter center, well guess what it’s 2020 and I’ve been in Humboldt County for 11years!!! I more than definitely understand these days. I love you all btw
I was at this show , the whole show was magical , but " Blow away " was without doubt the most powerful solo I have witnessed at any GD show , Brent was on fire (I to this day wonder what the pill was that he took right before starting , I caught it at the show and see it every time I watch the video ) . After Brent was done the audience erupted in to what seemed like a never ending cheer (I heard later it was just over 5 minuets) , and it was like the aftermath of a bomb blast , people were in shock , many smiles , and many tears (surely tears of joy) . When brent passed away I was one of the people who literally cried for 3 days , His energy seemed immortal .
Omg I can’t believe I’m just now discovering this video. FULL BODY CHILLS. Just wow. 🤩🤩🤩
This is a real special one no doubt!!
Brent was so full of life, so talented, and so darn cute. I saw a video of his daughter Jennifer singing her debut April 2017. She is beautiful. He would have been so proud. We miss you.
RIP brent, you're the man.
Like a feather in a whirlwind, Just as surely as the world spins, it will all blow away
This isn't far from where I was standing that day. Cried then and teared up just a bit now.
Same here brother
me as well
I have to say he was one of my favs. Precious and full of energy. Loved his emotion and soul.
Stella Blue it is
Rest In Peace Jerry and Brent!
Its times like these your realize just how GREAT THE DEAD really were and how underrated they were as well.. brings back great memories...
I was never a huge GD fan, but this song.... wowed me... imagine after what 25yrs ! I became an instant fan... but Brent was one of a kind. A talent that was still developing. Great musical, melody, and a classic. Music the way its supposed to be. No gimmicks, the singer, melody, instrument, and PASSION !!!!!
Please let me know if you've ever seen a more intense performance than Brent's, by any one at any time, than his on this July day at JFK stadium in Philly, 1989.
😢
❤️
😊
Really good song, and like others this song brings sadness remembering Brent's death.Lets remember all the good times we had on Tour when Brent was playing. It is what it is.And where they ever here at all...LOL...enjoy
Chris K, CT, USA
Saw them 35 times from 85-90 , and once more in 95. This was a memorable show, and the highlight of it. I had just started teaching music... philly area... a year before...gigging alot. Just turned 21. The influence of this band was my University.
This is like the best gospel. Mahalia. I hadn't and wouldn't know the pain that Brent's accessing here for another 2 yrs. Magical. U2 and the dead were on a different planet than everyone back in the 80s. Spiritual.
Peace, love light to u all g
Gerry mc williams
RIP Brent!!!
Truly one in a million!!
Glad I had the chance to to see you rip this tune and others in my time!!!
I have to deeply thank whoever posted this video. It is one of those little things in life for me that always inspires and makes me smile no matter what. I've probably watched it at least 50 times lol best version off this song by far!
Oh how I loved Brent. He rocked my soul.
He's never held us against our will
That's real love.
I get chills at the 5 minute mark every time.....
This is My Gospel. Brent & Jerry are My Saviors. The Grateful Dead is The Soundtrack of Life. I never ever had as chance to see Jerry or Brent, but Thank You from the bottom of my heart Jerry & Brent 🌹
Just like Duane Allman would say, “Man, feels like I’ve just been to church!”
Beyond emotional performance by Brent. Thank heavens for recorded music to document Grateful memories.
God Bless the Dead💀🌈
I did summer tour that year. They always kicked ass in Philly. This version is so full of energy probably now more than ever before. Thank You!
If a better version of Blow Away exists, I’ve yet to see it.
@@y2biz pretty sure it doesn't
This by far is the best Blow Away. So much energy.
most awesome version of Blow Away ever!
0:26 I love when the camera pulls up next to Brent then they zoom out and show the crowd. Goosebumps!!!
Rest easy, Brent. You were the face of the keys for me, growing up. And a damn fine singer, too. Straight up fire on those high notes! ❤
1989 was amazing, and Brent's contribution was a huge. I think Brent, like all of us, carried insecurities. On a lighter note, the stage set up and colors of those tapestries blowing threw the breeze brought great comfort for many of us in 1989. Having seen almost all California shows the previous couple of years, the crew I was hanging with all were pressing the capabilities of our minds. 1989 was the year that brought us all so close. We new we were safe, you had our backs, the fellowship of the dead community carried us through - thank you for that. Thanks for the post Mr. Nichols.
Best...Blow Away...EVER!!!
Amazing! Brent......
The tears flow every time I play this one. You can feel it coming straight from Brent's heart, and I have to believe he's talking to a specific person in his life, be they past or present. It's so powerful that the band is obviously feeling his realness in this and they're giving him their full support, Phil kicking ass with his funky, pounding bass line and Jerry stepping in at all the key moments to embellish what's emanating from Brent in that moment. The GD smoked like no other band even when they were just vamping on a riff like they are here. This is one for the ages!
Yeah...I always felt guilty that I didn't appreciate Brent more. He was fantastic. The perfect fit for the band.
I love it. As Brent keeps circling the airport, one at a time, the other three step forward to look at him wondering "we gonna land this time around Brent?"
This may be the best moment in Dead history
I was born years after Brent passed, but somehow today I feel a connection to him stronger than any member of the Dead. Rest in peace Brent, us Heads will carry your legacy on forever
Legendary performance. One of the best efforts ever, wow Brent.
This song drew me into my first spring tour, when I saw my first show, been so lucky to have found my groove, it seemed like home all those years, I wouldn't trade anything for the first hand education I received on love, kindness, humanity and how to get In touch with ones soul. The bus came by and I got on in 1988. That's when it all began..on tour as much as possible up until Jerry went to the other side. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
It's nice to see Jerry smilin' and movin' with the rhythm, with his eyes on Brent...Great partnership.
Bless you Brent and RIP. Left us 33 years ago today.
RIP Brent. We still miss you.
30 years ago today. I was there, and that breeze took over the crowd when we all opened our fists. It'd been a really hot day, and that was a magical moment. Rest in peace, Brent and Jerry. We miss you.
"It had been really hot that day", the understatement of the year! Ask just about anybody what they remember about that show, and the first thing they'll say is how f#%×!;g hot it was!!!
Need a heart emoji for this one. Just wow.
so damn good. ..
... goosebumps on my goosebumps.
fuck I miss this grouping.
God damn I love this version....
Amazing sound/recording of one of Brents most well-known moments. For good reason. Love ya Brent and Jerry. Forever Grateful
This makes me feel real love. Age doesn’t matter. I’m only 19. Playing and listening to the music from these magic later years bring my life together. Helps me express my love. This music will always be timeless. Thanks for showin me real love Brent, and Jerry of course. Can never forget about the fat man:)
I was at Brent's last show. Losing him was a tragedy and unnecessary. I'm grateful I got to see several shows in the two years before we lost him, he was magic!
Love this performance. The best is when Jerry keeps stealing glances at Brent. Jerry's coy grin and nod...ha. He like: 'Jesus, brotha!'
Jerry’s got a 16th century colonial Mullet. Bob looks like Steven Seagal. Phil’s a computer engineer in Silicon Valley. Bill owns a Pizza place, Mickey a Hair Salon, and Brent’s a coked up Werewolf. “Ladies and Gentlemen.. The Grateful Dead!” 🌹
Greatest comment ever on CZcams.
I always joke "now I know where I got my sense of fashion from" when I see these videos...
Fucking killed me😂😂😂
Read my mind
I had the same kind of reflection...long years ago!!..brother...!
Whenever I need a good cry of joy (and bittersweetly, sadness), I go straight to Brent throwing his fist in the air and Jerry's "headbanging" in enjoyment, wonderment, and approval. ✊
Right after this crazy first set ending with this amazing Blow away... the field... which was all grass.. not turf. there was a huge back rub circle. It was so many people that wound all through the floor like a conga line. the entire summer tour was amazing.. best time of my life for sure...
Brent goes off on real love, jerry loves the message, preaching to the choir, great performance, R.I.P. Brent, love pass it on
We still love you, Brent !!
Rest in power, Brent. Love you always.
Brent just tearing the house down! such a great jam!
That passion is real. I can feel it touch my soul! RIP
The love Jerry had for Brent is so palpable in this video. Any time I need a smile, I watch this video.
Thank you Brent, still taking us to school in 2022
Brent made that stadium levitate that night, we miss you brent!!
Wow, Brent’s energy is off the charts. What a gift this band was. Very thankful for such performances to have been captured on video.
Jerry tearin' it up at the very end of the song!!! : D
Jerry ripping for Brent makes me cry
the only true time i have ever seen the need for a mic drop...wow
