And if you rotate the case 180 degrees the 19.5 V fake type C fits nicely in the same way into the real type C USB socket. Probably not rated for that voltage. Not for long anyway.
19v only USB C connector is insane. Yes most people here know that you should not plug in 19v in your 5v phone but give this to a non technical person and they will without hesitating try to charge their phone with it.
Even though I know it, I don't trust myself to never be absent-minded ever. I think the design choice is irresponsible.
If i have something like this lying around, I'd put a label at the connector. I know some people who will plug in without checking anything and blow their phone.
The fact those USB-C power leads are allowed to be made is disgraceful.

I'd rather have a dc barrel connector. Very strong, easy to replace.
Very nice, you are one of the few repair techs that would attempt fixing a mini-computer, the customer should put a red label, saying Minisforum HM80 only on the power supply. I agree with you 100%, if they didn't want to pay for the proper usb C power delivery, they should have used a barrel connector.

The mini PC has a normal USB C socket as well as the power input jack. If the cursed power supply is plugged into the normal USB C socket, I would imagine fireworks ensue. This really is an accident waiting to happen.

Excellent job and a great video. Please do review some of these mini PCs. You might want to speak to Patrick from the Servethehome channel about the PSUs - I believe they have a collection of assorted mini PCs - but not being proper USB C is shocking. And, as you pointed out, dangerous.
When you do come to review them, be aware that they are very stealable so if you put one on display to learn what your customers think (and I suggest you do), make sure it's properly secured.
I have a similar one, UM700. Tool free opening, top pops off. Motherboard is installed upside down from yours, so SSD, RAM, wifi are accessible from the top. PSU is barrel connector.

A tip - when testing SMDs get a bit of sellotape stick the SMD to the tape then connect to the test pads - You will never tiddlywinks ping an SMD again. LOL
Nice fix Graham, just as a side note, you can get around your capture device's reluctance to capture drm content by using a simple 6quid ebay hdmi splitter. The cheap ones work by faking a drm compliant monitor, then passing out the decrypted video to the 2 outputs. Connect your preview monitor to the 2nd output, rather than the thru port on the capture device.
Yea, I have a splitter, I just hate the extra spaghetti that it adds to the setup😔

Done that, been there, plugged one into my phone. I just assumed at the tiime all c's where 5 volt. Someone changed that while I was sleeping. Lesson learned - Chinese do not understand standards. That should be a barrel detector

USB C PD uses various voltages: 5V, 9V, 12 V.... but not 19.5 V straight through the adapter... Goddamnit, I can already see the havoc that would wreck on capacitors on a board inside your phone.

You should have a look at getting the thermally active powder all you have to do is just sprinkle it over the board and then plug the power in and you will see it melting where it's shorting
Nice work. I fixed an RX 560 that was a visual damage repair. The M-Tester is fantastic and helped me identify what the component was. With some guidance of folks on your discord as well.

I agree with you and the other comments. This power connector is a deadly sin. PLEASE Minis Forum just put a DC barrel jack on that or create a proper USB-C loading circuit.
It's pretty interesting that it seens like the capacitors right after the input protection circuit in those mini PCs tend to short circuit. I've had to fix a handful of m93 from lenovo and when the problem was shorted input most of the time was one of the caps right after the input MOSFET. Most likely coincidence.

Mmm. I'm not sure if those specific caps take a beating because they're right on the input, before any kind of input protection (DC mosfets / in-rush inductors) or because being at the edge of the board, next to the connectors, makes them vulnerable to board flex.
The input caps will see large voltage spikes, due to ringing when the supply is plugged and unplugged. In this case probably 40-50V. But the caps themselves can easily handle that. I'm thinking its board flex as you said, as they are right beside the screw hole.

Great video but worth mentioning that the 10uF capacitors will be polarised and so it is essential to solder them in the correct way round. There should be markings on the capacitor to show either the + or - end and it should be easy to identify the -ve and on the board as this will be connected to ground. The 100nF capacitor will not be polarised and so can be soldered in any way round.
These are both unpolarised ceramic caps. Polarised Tantalum caps have distinctive black plastic casings.
@@Adamant_IT ah ok, that makes sense as to why you didn't mention polarity. As an old timer, I wasn't aware that you could get unpolarized 10uF capacitors so small!
Yea, on the limits for this foot-print, and prone to failure as well, so make of that what you will 😅

The S23 and its Ultra variant (the model of S23 I have) can utilise one of these.
However, that particular power brick on the Australian market is limited to a max output of 12v.
The reason behind this is to ensure compatibility with devices with USB C connecters in general.
As our devices get more powerful, they'll need more power, therefore more voltage to charge, but they can also be adapted for anything else.
We don't have the economy to support more voltage hungry devides, except car and aircraft batteries, which is bulls**t at best.

As a vintage computer collector, i'm honestly shocked to see how much regression we've made with USB-C - this is a throwback to the days of 9 pin and DIN interfaces that are physically compatible with each other, but not electrically compatible... I guess manufacturers who can't remember the past are condemned to repeat it, lol
There is probably a lot of truth in that. People who design such concepts nowadays are young and do not know the hassle we've gone through in the past and are bound to repeat our errors.

I noticed the laptop i'd purchased recently had shipped with a charger that had a very small, thin plug; so small in fact that it would fit perfectly inside of the 3.5mm audio jack on the machine. I was curious to see what would happen, so I plugged the charger into the audio jack-
Kidding. I looked online to see if anyone had accidentally done this, and sure enough, there's quite a few people online asking for help or repair advice after mistakenly plugging the charger into the wrong socket.
This is the kind of shit that could potentially end with a class action lawsuit in my eyes, hahah.
WHOA.... that dead short was asking for nearly 6.6A at .04V... according to the min/max numbers that appeared when you plugged it in.

Naa that only applies to mobile devices. This is just a bad flex. Barrel jacks look old fashioned, people want Type-C. But you either do that properly, or you don't do it at all.
Lenovo is using yellow usb connector on power supply for units that uses micro usb at 9v ( i have a yaga book that uses mifro usb at 9v ) and i saw also dell using microusb at 9v
Have you considered buying a pair of hot tweezers for removing and replacing tiny components rather than using a hot air station ?
I tend to favour tools that can do many things, rather than one specific trick, but I have to admit, a pair of hot tweezers would get a lot of use. Have been thinking about them lately as well 👌
What is the purpose in having an USB-C connector if it is not PD compatible?
Just product designers being cheap... wanting to new connector without the expensive of a PD control circuit.
It's annoying though, because a non-compliant Type-C port is worse than useless... you can't use a PD charger on it, so there's no advantage to it being Type-C, and the power supply it comes with is a hazard because it could damage PD devices that don't have specific protection against a faulty charger.

@@peterc8622 cheers pal! its been years since i have built a PC in general, the last daily work horse is pushing 7 years now, which was built for windows 10, all i have had to do, is change the PSU and Graphics card, due to me changing the monitor, for a newer unit. That was close to 5 years ago, that's about as far as i have gone upgrade wise. Id just change the monitor for a HDMI unit, for this little system. How often do people use DVD drives in systems etc? I have only used it twice since.

Yea a PD charger won't talk to a device like this, because there's no chip in the computer to say "Hello, please give me 20v", so the PD charger will sit at 0v or maybe 5v in some cases. They should've just put a barrel jack on this PC.
@@Adamant_IT So we have a connector (USB-C) on the computer that isn't compatible with other USB-C power adapters, a USB-C power adapter that isn't USB-C and can blow up other USB-C devices and it's a connector that is more expensive, arguably weaker and more difficult to replace than normal barrel jack connectors?

@@Adamant_IT It is strange because I have a Minisforum UM790Pro and that has a barrel jack for power (and also PD in via a proper USB-C port). Maybe they have learned their lesson. Personally I would have thought the barrel jack would have been cheaper and easier.

Hello, I have a Minisforum NAB 6 that's experiencing a power issue. When it does turn on, it shuts off after a while-sometimes after an hour, and other times after 3 or 4 hours. It then takes several days before I can turn it back on. Could you assist with this problem? I'm located in the U.S. and am willing to ship it to you. Please let me know.
Surely the chance of nuking their customers or customers' friends' phones or other devices isn't worth any small savings vs. using a regular type C capable of 60 something watts

That power adapter can charge my Nintendo switch powerbank since it can take up to 20v to charge it!
Same issue with another Miniforum computer after 2.5 years of mild use. They do not respond to support emails. My recommendation would be to avoid this brand.
Hi, I am trying to identify a component on the power in circuit of my Intel Nuc. The component is marked with 4305 and RQ | 1W , has 8 pins and a dot in one corner. I think it is a mosfet but unsure of the type or rating. Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Developed by @pldaniels , there might be a run of these go on sale at pldaniels.com in the future, not sure what the time scale is. They'll cost more than the usual cheap ones, but software monitoring with hysteresis graphs is very useful for seeing oscillations and pulses.
Some lenovo laptops are coming with usb power connnectors.
They at least are proper PD units ( many machines are coming with them ) and it's a nice thing to see now because it does simplify the workbench... but my goodness, this one should have just stayed as a barrel jack :(

@26:00 could you have just soldered the earth side of the capacitor to the circular ground plane to the side, instead of scratching the motherboard
Probably, but you'd need to be aware of how the mobo fits back into the chassis, in case the chassis frame knocks the cap off again.
yea this is dumb. either support PD or use a barrel jack. at least with a barrel jack people won't plug it directly into their phone because barrel jacks are kinda conditioned in the conscience to not be universal and to be extra careful
it doesn't cost them that much to just support PD. it's simply a penny pinching design. I would be fine if the PSU was PD and only supported 5v and 19v, because at least then it wouldn't fry a phone. and even if the PC would just not boot without 20v, that's fine too, as long as it supports PD.

I have a general question regarding my Dads PC motherboard that won’t turn on.
Just some quick background. I have been very interested in fixing electronic equipment since a very early age and have been absolutely glued to your videos that have enabled me to fix a numerous amount of items and have been doing so for many years now.
I was wondering if you or anyone else reading this, could be so kind as to point me in the right direction to solving this motherboard issue. I have numerous fault finding equipment and am very adept with soldering (especially SMT soldering). If anyone can help me I would be very grateful. Many thanks. Ash

Not that I know of. A lot of it comes down to watching a lot of board repair videos on CZcams, and having access to stuff to practise on.

How can I improve the performance of windows 11 on an 4 year old laptop
Depends on the laptop, 4-years old should definitely be viable, but check the specs on it - In my opinion, the minimum requirements for a good user experience on a computer these days is: 4 core / 8 thread CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a known-brand SSD. If the system is less than that, it's going to feel laggy. There's a few tweaks you can do to make a slow computer feel a bit more responsive, but getting to that minimum spec should be the first steps I think.

Only an easy fix if you have a lot of experience but it seemed to cheer you up what with the "invalid traffic" problem yours and similar channels have.
Is it helpfull to " leave a comment for the algorithm or could that make the "invalid traffic" problem worse?
Cheers! I'd say engagement is always helpful. I'm not sure if anyone really knows the details of the invalid traffic issue we're all facing, most of the coverage I've seen of it is just people saying 'viewership / revenue has collapsed' without really delving into what can actually be done about it. This is just another symptom of the problem that is algorithmically-driven-content. Content creators need to just keep doing their thing, and the audience needs to use the subscriptions page to check for new content, instead of trusting the home page to tell them when a new video is out.
the scale is so hard to tell under the microscope most of the time. when you went to test the 3 components you took off, I thought you were testing the small 1 first after seeing how small it was... nope

Why did you not take off the chipped capacitor then test the board for a short. Did you need more video content? Hope you didn't charge the customer extra for that.
When diagnosing, you should look over the whole board first to get the big picture. A cracked capacitor would be the least of my concern if I found a crater in the board further down the line. But as we went further in, there was no real sign of problems, so that's the point where I moved back to the capacitors.
It's also about teaching people to think about following power rails through a board, this time the capacitor was right at the input, but if it wasn't that one, where would we look next...
