I would posit that there is no debate over which is more effective. The debate is which makes more sense to carry. The question to decide that becomes how important higher capacity and slightly quicker follow up shots are to you.
I’ve been a 45 ACP man for over 40 years but now with the new model self-defense ammunition in 9mm I’ve changed to 9mm due to a little less recoil and magazine capacity!
@@bruceb9515 Yes it has, and have you not seen .45 +P or 450SMC from Double Tap or 45 Super, or seen any of the offerings from Underwood and Buffalo bore? I carry 45 +P and 45 Super and 450SMC in my 45 Super and XDM and 9 mm doesn't compare even in plus p.

9mm is built for speed to defeat armor. 45 is built for mass and release of energy on target. It's apples to oranges. That said my edc is a 1911 in 45acp. If I was facing soldiers with armor that might change
Since I'm in a communist state, Washington. The next carry pistol I would buy is a 45 acp since I'm limited to 10 round mags. Saying that, I'm glad I already have 15-17 round mags for my 9mm edc. If you're limited on how many rounds go larger caliber. If not, go for capacity.
Davidriggs9084 myself and my wife live in eastern washington and with the bs the state both myself and my wife carry revolvers . Mine is a Single Action 45 and my wife has a snubnose 357
It was definitively shown in 1992 that caliber is not important. A properly constructed hollow point generating 400 plus ft lbs AT THE TARGET is the key to good stopping power regardless of caliber. The debate has been over for 32 years.
I might go for a .45 if there were more pistols with a 12 + 1 or greater capacity other than Glock (sorry Glock guys), that being MY minimum capacity requirement for a full size gun. For now, I'll go with 9mm, with 17 or 18 + 1 capacity, or .40 S&W, with 15+ capacity.
.45 and 9mm when compared on actual lethality targets damn near have identical impacts and damage done in every area of the body. So really they’re the same round 9mm is just cheaper and you can carry more rounds at a time so I’m team 9mm all day

My opinion 357 sig 10mm HOT 45 acp true +p 40 sw and 9mm
Either/or will get the job done. 20 yrs ago we chose the .45 for a duty weapon, as 9mm ammo became so much better there's many depts in the country that actually switched back.
Im a 9mm team member. I own guns in both calibers but with the newer 9mm loads and the high cap mags im a 9mm guy. Plus i run a 9mm PCC which runs the same mags so for me its a no brainer.
The rounds speak for themselves. You have a much bigger capacity with 9mm and it’s faster and easy on the recoil. Buuuuuuuut as everyone knows 45 has been through 2 world wars. Any who can shoot half ass alright won’t need anything more than 8-10 rounds In my opinion, plus if you get shot in the knee cap with a 45 hollowpoint then good luck walking ever again because you’ll be missing the lower part of your leg. I love both rounds tbh though lol
@@RogueGinger o dude they exist lol Glock 29, Springfield XD-M compact, S&W MP M2.0 to name a few. Kinda unnecessary for concealed carry against humans but hey whatever you’re into lol. I have a Glock 40 but it’s huge lol. It’s a range toy or my sidearm if I go hunting. It’s a fucking unit lol.
Team 9mm here. In a self defense situation you are going to be shooting a soft target not a block of ice and brick. A well placed 124 gr Hydrashok will stop an attacker in one shot. Plus 9mm ammo is cheaper, which allows for more range time & you get higher mag capacities.
From close distance .45 cal has better performance. More foot pound energy and bigger hole .... it's physics. 10 mm or even full .40 cal have better performance than .45 cal but expect the recoil as trade.
A lot more than what round hits hardest should go into your decision of what round to carry. Things such as, gun fit to your hands, round capacity, recoil, ability to get back on target quickly. While a .45 acp may hit slightly harder, the fact is all handgun rounds suck when it comes to stopping bad guys so you need to put multiple rounds into them especially if they are on drugs which many of them are. Fact is 7 out of every 8 people shot with a handgun live and there are countless cases of people being shot and it really not fazing them right away. Therefore you want a round that performs decently for a handgun that you can easily put multiple rounds on target as quickly as possible and as accurately as possible. The 9mm best fits that description. The 9mm while giving up a little performance to the .45 acp, it's not that much but you have a much higher round capacity with most 9mm handguns, recoil is much less which allows for quicker follow up shots and recoil is quite a bit less making it easier for most people to shoot more accurately. Yes there are people that can shoot a double stack .45 acp quickly and accurately but they are going to be able to do all that even better with a 9mm while only giving up a slight amount of wounding performance. Yes there was a time when the 9mm sucked but impovements in bullets and powders changed that
The real answer is "it depends". For a department, sure. A full size 9mm makes sense because anyone can shoot it effectively and they have more chances to actually hit something (police miss 70% of the time). For civilian carry, not in a war, not police, it's not like you'll be laying down suppressive fire... and you are responsible for where every bullet fired ends up. Statistically, in civilian encounters, a 5-shot revolver will get the job done, but we probably shouldn't count on that. I watched an interview where a man had recurring bad dreams that he faced multiple threats and ran out of ammunition, so he switched from a .45 to a 9mm. My nightmare is that I shoot a threat repeatedly and it has no effect... so this Fudd carries a .45 AARP with 10 Federal HSTs in it and enough barrel length to expand them... because .45 is my emotional support caliber. YMMV.
Bad testing. You need to mimic human flesh as a test. Might as well go into a gunfight and miss all your target but hey , yah brought hell to those brick walls.
This whole caliber argument is completely irrelevant I carry both but a 50-110 has way more energy than both but most people can't handle it and the over penetration that's why nobody uses it carry what you can handle and put the most hits on target as quickly as possible
@RogueGinger I only questioned it because there was some steel core 9mm a while back, and I wondered why you might be using it in a comparison test. Thanks for responding
