Freddie and Montserrat became so close, that she was one of the very, very few people that he told he was suffering from the illness that was soon to take him away from us all. Thanks and RIP Freddie and Montserrat.
Note that Freddie was singing in Spanish. Montserrat was his very close friend. She went to his funeral and to the unveiling of his statue. She was a truly famous Spainish Diva!

Freddie always loved opera (see Bohemian Rhapsody) and he wrote this for Montserrat, she was from Barcelona, before they even met, because he was a massive fan of hers. It turned out she was a huge fan of his too and they did a whole album together. What was also lovely is that it was clear, from interviews with them both, they developed an enormous love for each other. Judging from interviews from later in her life it seems that Montserrat never really got over the loss of Freddie. Montserrat herself passed away in 2018. RIP to two magnificent voices.

Such a lovely track. Many people comment on Freddie's operatic quality of singing, so this made perfect sense. The year after he passed, it was the Summer Olympics in Barcelona...and of course it was an even bigger hit! Lovely reaction. Thank you. (by the way, this was the title track from their album)
Montserrat Caballe was the last true prima donna operatic diva of this time there will never be another one like her. Her voice was one of the truest pure voices ever. Her daughter Montserrat Marti Is also a soprano and her husband was a tenor. Her full name was Dona Maria Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballe y Folch.

She was with Brian and Freddie’s parents at the unveiling of his statue on Lake Geneva after his death. They truly were friends until the end. Love your reactions but this one was especially awesome to see.
The story is this: He loved her voice and wanted to write her a song that she would sing with him. When he finally met her she said "write a song about my home town" which is how Barcelona came to be.
When he pitched it to her, he sang both of their parts; which is very impressive.

This song really took off after the Barcelona summer olympics 1992 used it as their official anthem.
Full of happy tears now - the line if God is willing, they will meet again - and they have ... oh dear - these are happy tears but it's SO beautiful to hear them together again. I believe Freddie had heard Monserrat sing and loved her, and wondered if she would sing with him and apparently she jumped at the chance - she'd loved his voice too. She was born in Barcelona, fabulously talented Opera Singer and died there October 2018 (RIP both)
This song I believe he wrote for her. Being an Opera fan, it was about how he felt when he first saw Montserrat, "The moment you stepped into the room, you took my breath away" He adored her and one day hoped to sing with her "If God was willing, they would meet again someday" and God was willing, because they ended up doing this album together. She was just as beautiful to watch on stage as Freddie was, which made it such a powerful performance. You could tell how much they adored one another, especially in the live performance of "Golden Boy"
I do not know if you knew that it was Freddie's dream to sing with her. He once said that her voice is the most beautiful in the world. He truly admired her. What he didn't know that she admired him as well. The became close friends and she was one of the first persons who knew that Freddie was HIV positive. I think you can feel a strong bond between those two 😍. Sorry for my English. Greetings from Germany

Freddie wrote a whole album for the two of them,and this song was used for the Olympics in 1992 which unfortunately Freddie didn't live long enough too see,he did some solo work as did Dr Brian May and Roger Taylor

This song was written by Freddie and Mike Moran for the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona, Montserrat’s home city (she was a very well known Spanish opera singer......one of the best opera singers in the world). Freddie went to an opera and fell in love with her voice after seeing her perform. Eventually they met and stayed up all night singing, and decided to do an album together....the rest is history. The entire album they made is truly wonderful.

If you've heard Freddie's Exercises in Free Love, it was written for their album. He did it so she could learn the tune before the words were written, with him singing both parts. I think. It's Ca-by-yay.

I lesser Known and beautiful song from their (Freddie and Montserrat) Barcelona album is "Ensueno"--- pull up the lyrics on this one.. talks about being together for eternity-- totally beatutiful.. Exercises in Free Love by Freddie is basically Freddie's demo he sent to her of Ensueno where he sings his part AND her part.. another must listen.. and nice to hear both of them

This venture rocked both their worlds and resulted in the first crossover between the Rock and Opera worlds. Each remained true to their own sound but also experienced the freedom to explore. Catch an interview of each singly or together on their work together and you will witness genuine, mutual love and admiration. Knowing he went into this after his diagnosis, wanting to pursue such a daunting venture because it was now or never...and for the first time to decline singing live because he did not trust he could do it at the level it deserved is both touching and heartbreaking.
There is a whole album called Barcelona. Yep, there are more songs for you to hear their magnificent voices. Truly a remarkable pairing. It's considered one of Freddie's 'solo' projects - all original songs.

Two phenomenal artists who each believed the world was a far richer place for the other's presence.
The sad part of this was that this was the last live performance before he died. They were supposed to sing it at the opening of the 92 Olympics and he told her that he didn’t think he would be alive that long (according to an interview with her). They sang it at the announcement of the 92 Barcelona Olympics. He died a year later. He co-wrote this song for her.
This always brings me to tears because this was a dream of Freddie's... to sing with the beautiful opera singer, Monserrat, whom passed away in 2018.
The album was released in 1988, just after Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS
Apparently, she was an avid rock fan and Freddie an opera. The two hit it off. Monserrat was the only one whom made Freddie cry. Oh my lord. Thanks for doing this. It's magical!

I encourage you to listen to Freddie’s solo track Exercise In Free Love from The Great Pretender album, then listen to Ensueño from the Barcelona album. Freddie and Montserrat did an amazing job of putting lyrics (Spanish) to piece the and recording it as a duet.

thanks, Jayy - they WERE meant to be together -- Freddie was entranced with Spanish opera star Monserrat Caballe -- and he wrote an entire opera for her - and him - to sing -- he was nervous to approach her... if you have heard "exercises in free love" - sung by Freddie - that is what he brought to her -- this would be her part... and she fell in love with him, as we all do... lol-- the song ended up being "Ensueno" -- with Montsy singing the high part, and Freddie singing baritone... and... also other great songs... OMG -- I ramble on... please look into it... I'm sure others will make similar recommendations... and hey -- New hope for 2021 as of today! --
I love the story about how nervous they both were before they first met. Freddie was nervous because he was such a huge fan of Montsy, and he couldn't imagine a great diva like her having much time or respect for a "lowly" rock star, and she was both naturally a shy person when offstage, and a bit taken aback after having seen some live Queen footage. But when they met, it really was that magical moment referenced in the song - Freddie was breathless, and Montsy was utterly charmed. And the rest was history.

Someone already told you they did a whole album together, I am sure it is wonderful. The song Barcelonia was played at the summer Olympics as the opening number in Spain and he passed away before he could hear it played. So sad so very sad.

Freddie was a huge fan boy of Montserrat and they met up and play for hours and hours and staying together and he ended up writing the song and saying all her part to her to show her how he wanted it done there's a documentary of them if you look it up it will explain all the back history it's a great video I'll try to find it and put the link in here there's a lot information he absolutely loved her and she loved him and after he died a lot of people came to her asking to do a duet and she said not unless they're better than Freddie and she never did do another duet with anyone else that I know of, anyone please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this information
