Motocamping Trip GONE WRONG: Pre-Oregon BDR Shakedown Run, Part 1

- Learning from the mistakes I made on my last BDR moto camping trip, I decided that before we head out to take on the brand new Oregon BDR, I needed to do a full shakedown run to test my BDR motocamping gear and my bike. I'm really glad I did, because this motorcycle camping trip was kind of disastrous. Roads blocked by snow, multiple re-routes, gear failures, my exhaust baffle taking a vacation (TWICE) and more. This was a great test of the motorcycle camping setup and the bike I plan on taking on the ORBDR next month and I'm glad I got all these kinks worked out ahead of time.

You need a KLR rider in the group. We always have loctite.. 😂
or XR650L both rattled apart over time as i recall with lots of loctite
You guys proved that the Journey is definitely the Destination. I feel for Travis riding such a big bike on that terrain. Good job Travis
You are so right about the snow. It NEVER gets better after the first drift.
Ben from moto camp nerd is a great guy. He and his wife are truly hard working nice folks. I ride with a group here in NC who Moto camp nerd has outfitted our entire group with lots of useful gear. Great motorcycle camping gear.
Thanks for the kind words and support!
There is always more snow than we adventurers anticipate but what a great ride you had. Smart time to turnaround, and more fun tomorrow!
This was fun! The editor must REALLY know his stuff haha. Thaks for sharing, I really enjoyed coming along on this shake-down run!! Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
Very true, the road Never gets better!...hard lesson we all learn. You expend So much energy to keep fighting your way in, out of Ego and Delusion.... then you're too wiped to get out.
I love this stuff Ben, and it’s called ADVENTURE!
I just took 6010 on July 3rd and again on the 4th. It is perfect and a bit dusty.
People need to know to use the RIGHT side of the trails and roads!!!! But that said I think I got a good video of a guy t-boning a tree after fleeing from my side of the road!
THANKS FOR POSTING!
Excellent, I enjoyed the video.
Hey, with all that snow, you can do it. You just need to get some skis for your bike...
Skis? Seriously.
Yes, I am serious. I dont know if you US Americans have them but in Sweden we have these spring loaded thingies that you can put on the side of your bike. When you come to snow you just put your feet in these metal cups and press down, the skis, short ones looking like the ones in front of snow mobiles, goes down and keep you level on the snow. You should try it. Might be something new you can show on your channel that US Americans have not seen before.
Cheers from a Swede in North Carolina
Travis is a rock star riding the big AT pretty much everywhere. 👍 and that slo-mo was hysterical. 🤣
The turn around ended up being a great decision. Your advice months ago to not attempt the Oregon BDR right after the GL Rally was sound advice seeing this footage.
I ended up melting one strap part way through on my Great Basin coming back from the GL Rally. It still works but I ordered another one in orange to match the 890 especially with those deals last month.
Matt, great job with the editing and music. 👍
Great video Dork in the Road and great editing Matt! 👌. Maybe for your baffle situation since you like it better in maybe red lock tight it in?
Here's a silver lining, the hundreds of U-turns I have done adventure riding has really improved my handling of sharp switchbacks! Just call turning around for backtracking 'Switchback practice'.
Great vid. Just completed my first moto camping trip…preparing for bigger trips. We spent 5 days out in WV. Have my load out all squared away with tools, tent, sleeping gear, etc. DRZ needs a couple more mods (sent you pic of it a while back). I know you said you like the new garmin…may jump on it and quit second guessing. You have been a big help in getting my adventures planned. Thank you! We had a great trip!
Love the backpack cam view!
Love when you and Travis travel together, despite your problems, great little adventure, keep the video’s coming!!
Love watching you guys absolutely kill it good people good times a finicky baffle and great pancakes LoL thanks for sharing brother 👊
The editors, editorial comments (lulz), are a nice touch. I like to hear them in my head, as Ron Howard in Arrested Development, which oddly enough, is appropriate for you two.
Did the old OR BDR in 08 on a EXC 450. I used the ultimate “camping” tool: VISA & motels 😀
Ben, piece of advice, I see you have your garmin inreach on your body. Great location for it. My advice would be to get a piece of heavy duty cloth to wrap around it and secure with Velcro. I’ve chipped my screen on my inreach having it in the same location. My new backpack has a small pocket it fits in.
Next time you are in the reedsport/ Coos Bay area hit me up we can show you some of our favorite routes in our town. Great riding that you would only be able to experience if you were a local
How do I contact you ? Do you preferred email?
Terrific vid. You were sure spotting those Puddin' Cups. I like the backpack camera shots. Thanks for suffering through that dinner just to acquire the food shots for us. Keep up the great work.
This is where I grew up. I took my dt175 all over that country. You missed a great pit stop at the umpqua hot springs.
Even bad trips make good videos. Best of luck on your OR BDR trip. Cant wait to see it.
Ay long time! Nice to finally have a chance to watch your vids again. Hope you've been well,. I'm really enjoying your content. Take it easy!
Another great Video. I like the fact this was a vid of "when things go wrong" and you still had a great time. Just an idea maybe pack a few of those spongy ear plugs. good for muffler issues and snoring camp mates. Cheers
Motocamp nerd is the best!
So jealous of the scenery & all of it just got back from my trip to Oregon drove w the family towards the beach but anyways the whole drive there was wishing I was on my motorcycles instead great video
Hey that was a good shakedown for all of us as well as for Travis and yourself. I wonder if the old Oregon Trail was littered with pudding cups and baffle bolts as well? It's great to learn about Moto Camping Nerd as well. I'll check it out and use your link when I order. Thanks for the adventure!
Loved to multiple camera angles! Great idea
This episode should have been titled “One step forward, two steps back.” Good video with beautiful country. Hope the baffle gets fixed for good and safe riding!
Nice video, I remember playing in mud and snow. Not much fun when your not ready to play in it.
Baffling ride but you made it 🤧
Thank you Ben, great footage!
Fun video. Looking forward to the next one
Dude! You gotta come out to the Malheur NF! Just a short trip east for you to John Day OR area.
Just a few hours south of you. Here in Southern Oregon we say, once you see snow, not much further will you go. Especially if you're climbing in elevation. That baffle is super annoying. I'm sticking with the stock exhaust on my 300L as aftermarket exhausts are too loud for comms. We got blocked by snow a week ago up near Diamond Lake. We were around 5500'. It wasn't a shady spot either which is surprising. There was a Jeep stuck in the snow. Nobody was there. Looked like it had been there for a few days. I like to do my trips in August. Snow is gone, heat isn't as bad, days are still long, and the mosquitoes are not nearly as bad.
Sometimes instead of threading the needle(trying to mount on bike with gear/luggage), I just start bike stand next to it put it in gear let out clutch and step on and swing leg over while taking off. If that makes sense.
"Drink and stare at each other" actually LOL. Beautiful riding area, envious.
Another fun video made even better by Matt's editing!
Can’t believe the camera stayed on Travis’s pack after that tumble.
Good advice, hit snow on the way up turn around. That snow is generally hard. Video showed the XT2 screen nicely. Use some heat tape on the bags.
At 28:59, "I'm gonna enjoy Mister Puff-puff and sip on a little bourbon" 🎉 Cheers!
The view from camera on Travis' backpack gives very good content and context to the video. Good idea! Sometimes ya just have to turn around. LOL, Also a good idea. And look a lost part!
Sucks you had to turn around. But I definitely don’t blame you.
Still some awesome views!
Wish you better luck on the trail you’re preparing for!
Still a good video! Pre ride test is important! You guys are obviously good buds and fun to watch! Man, organize and “ motocamp with DITR and EAM for 2024! You’d have a massive turn out!
Tall Man Moto got me when they were in the diner. Going to have to go check his channel out. Just wish there wasn't so much music. I like hearing the bike and the road. Some music is ok.
What a “Baffling” ride eh? Fun content nonetheless even with all the backtracking.
HEY Ben! I bought my XT2 from moto camp nerd, and I think I did your code as well as some stuff for Amanda (magpie) also. I LOVE IT.. Please do a review of it, I'm a Garmin Newbie..but it's amazing! Keep up the great videos...
"You are good at crashing." 🤣🤣🤣
I love it when you find your Exhaust Baffle, and bolt....... That is just a pure win after a nature inspired defeat and turn around. Stuff happens. I went to ride NF23 in Washington to hit some of the side NF roads, and it was closed, then tried to camp at Goose Lake and got chased out by hordes of mosquitoes. A defeat, but nice forest service roads to ride with lots of wash-outs and downed trees. Use Red Loctite on a baffle bolt. When was this filmed? Just curious about the snow obstacles.
Thanks. Very prep - prepat - prepertory. Locktite ?, the booze is the best part.
You are an amazing story-narrator-teller.
Aw thanks
Travis needs a lighter bike for the bdr's. Love the Laurel and Hardy fast forward. 😊
all I can say is all your video's are GREAT !!!
Use some high temp red loctite for that exhaust baffle bolt man, or even jb weld on the bolt if you never want that to happen again lol
The snow lasts a long time up there, especially with the amounts we had this year.
Truly a great channel!!.
Im diggn it.👍🏻👍🏻
Note to self throw in some bailing wire for those lost bolts and cooked straps :)
Dont forget a folding saw for clearing blowdown.
Most of my bad bike days are still better than good office days. 😊
Would love to ride in the places you get to explore. If you do much night riding I highly recommend the Baja designs headlight for the RL. It’s worlds better than the factory.
Fun times, just went through my own shakedown trip;)
I had an old Note 8 cell I was going to let my grandson have to use as a camera on his atv. Went through saving important pics and videos. Shocked to see half were food pics lol So I dont feel so bad now that I know others do it too
In my experience the plan rarely makes it through the first day. That's when it becomes an adventure
Nice work. Maybe get an aftermarket silencer? I know Honda’s like Yoshimura.
Quite the baffling ride with a guy that has a screw loose.
Who needs a exhaust baffle in the forest during fire season?!😂
Sometimes a 4x4 support vehicle comes in handy
The only thing I know about Oregon is the Oregon Trail video game, where everything you do kills you. 😑
Use some red loctite on your exhaust bolt
the case of the loosening exhaust.....call for Inspector Clouseau....he won't be Baffled.....🤔🤔
Snow? I thought you guys were supposed to be in mid summer? Greetings from Australia.
At 15:02, behind you, I wonder if that is one of those Native American bent tree signals?
Awesome.
That was effed!
Hopefully you got all the bad luck out of your systems on this adventure!
I hope so.
Do you know if the previous owner removed the exhaust baffle at some point and that's why it came loose? Hopefully Loctite can withstand that heat so you don't have the bolt coming loose on the official BDR run. Great vid!
This is a brand new exhaust system that I just put on.
@@DorkintheRoad ah, I see.
How was the big Agnes sleep pad? I'm thinking about getting one for my COBDR trip next month
When at the end of the road you pull out your phone to find your way with a Garmin on your handle bars? Should I save the 600.00 bucks?
Nice video!! 🤩 Sena 50R?
We’re shooting for the Cresent to Summit lake, then over to Lemolo/138 on July 8-9.
Hoping the route will be accessible😀
Thanks for the trail news.
What date did you guys ride it?
Two weeks ago
Hi Ben. Your adventure spec mini fairing seems to be very solid. I get a vibration noise from mine and I think it’s from the plastic screen that attaches to the adventure spec frame. Any tips?
I have the same annoying noise. Let need know if you come up with a way to fix it lol
Question..... how did you get the USWE pack to fit you? I'm a big guy too, and I bought the Explore 26 pack a few weeks ago, and just could not get ot to fit comfortably even with everything loosened up all the way. It just seemed to be designed for the smaller to average size user in mind.
They make extended straps. They work great
Adversity just makes ya stronger! LOL
Tack weld that muff
What happened to the MSR gear? I'm a couple months from adding a new set and you had me sold on the MSR.
It's hot now
What helmet are you running?
Its not an adventure until it becomes and ordeal lol.
I know this is a bit weird and unusual of a question, but I was wondering if I could join ya'll for my first BDR? I am officially on vacation starting the 10th, have 3 weeks off, been building my T7 since last October...and don't have anyone to go with. figured it'd be nice to have some experienced folks to ride with. plus I'm excellent with a camera, am more or less a CZcamsr, too....and I have a beard.
and I've been watching a lot of pol tarres vids so I'm basically an expert. and I have both Deadpools memorized.
How do you get the sound of your bike without all the wind noise on your Insta360 ONE R/RS?
Mic in my helmet
@@DorkintheRoad What kind of mic?
Man, I love ya, but you gotta have a go sometime..bury it thru snow and water, and mud..you have the bike, the gear, the luggage, the helmut and cams..and you turnaround at the slightest hint of getting stuck..I want you to learn to be more positive.,,so you get abit wet or dirty..have a go
I'm trying to set a good example. I'm not gonna encourage people to get in over their heads.
Umpqua hotsprings,
That was f'd.
Locktite
That was f'ed.
Very annoying audio. I'm outa here.
Bye
There’s still snow up there??
I’m not the best on the CZcams navigation to find out how to direct message you. Where might I find your email to give you my contact info
