Rather than be offended by these comments, I actually love how the world reacts when any NZ rugby team loses. It is a true sign of their respect and admiration for who we are as a rugby nation. Though we are not where we used to be, we're still the team every other team judges themselves by. Congrats 🇫🇷

It's because Rugby is well funded in Europe (not just France), there are more teams and more professional competitions. Most of these kids already have first grade experience, so they're already battle hardened from playing against Men at a young age. I say good on them, I love seeing other countries do well that aren't the usual All Blacks, Wallabies, or Springboks. France will win this years world cup no doubt, and maybe the next one too.

It's not just a question of money, it's also a question of demographics and the number of licensees in a sport. Ever wonder why it's always the biggest nations that win the most Olympic medals? The United States, Russia and China are more likely to win medals because they have many more athletes in their countries, and therefore more likely to have champions. It's simply mathematics, the calculation of probabilities. Add to that the financial resources and infrastructure to train them. There's nothing extraordinary about the fact that France has a very good level today; it's just the logical evolution of their level of play after so much development and investment in such a large, developed country. What is extraordinary and incredible is that the All Blacks have dominated rugby for so many years. Genetics and their warrior people could partly explain this. I also imagine that rugby is a real religion over there. Bye the way, sorry for my english, I'm french.
French team : 273 pro caps this season (not counting Pro D2 which is also a pro league) All black : 35 pro caps this season That make the difference. You have to give trust to your young talents and make them grow with the big boys.
2 great teams, so many skilled and powerful players on both sides. both teams deserved a better pitch. Ireland v Australia played before them on the same field and it was cut to pieces. love this tournament and the great skill and commitment on display!
@@mauroger86I mean the first try by France. Back line went in untouched. But the forwards got them right up to the try line. The weather there was also horrendous. It’s a u20s team. Some of these guys are professional some are not. Give them a break. Quality rugby. And if it was this muddy and wet I’d have my 2 biggest guys get a lot of carries. It’s harder to run back line plays in these conditions. Id say be this picky about the national teams but these guys are still developing. France played some excellent rugby. I loved the big guys carrying and it was amazing to see teammates just hold them up through the tackle. That’s practiced that and you know they had to have tweaked the plan because of the weather. New Zealand also had some big lads but they could only match the energy of France for those 2 tries but had some good moments as well
Congrats to France, dominant forward pack set the platform, much needed on a wet pitch. NZ, keep your head up boys, showing some great signs already with little time together. Future looks bright for world rugby, awesome to see.
I still have to watch the second half but I am still wondering about the NZ team tactics. Surely the coaching staff would have done some research on how the French forwards would play especially given the conditions? One of the lineouts we had at least 3 forwards not attempting to counter the obvious maul? They were very slow to respond and hanging off until way too late?
A gutsy 'leopard-like' performance from N Z U20's, however, this young French side were 'tigers'. Savage, unrelenting, powerful, huge. The ball-handling, craft, and speed of foot of the enormous French pack was so effective, in such dreadful weather conditions. As for the future of 'Les Bleus'? It seems well bloody secure with this crop of young men coming along. Hard luck NZ U20's.

Despite the loss, I see not only the French team improving and progressing as they go in the tournament but our boys in black as well. We're not only in to win or lose, but to learn too. I guarantee if there was rematch between these phenomenal teams, we'll see a change and possibly our boys capturing the win. These comments mentioning the 'downfall' and what not - what a load of BS. These youngins' are improving as they are going about playing for our country. So much potential, and i'm not giving up just yet. As an Irish fan, I would say In the big picture NZ will always be in the mix as a contender I believe, but it's not looking too likely that you will progress in this competition, as only one runner up gets out of the pools, you would need a lot of results in the other pools to go your way, bit of a severe format, but guess it doesn't drag out the tournament unnecessarily long.
@@harshbutfair8993 Yeah, I'm afraid so. I do agree, NZ are definitely contenders. As I mentioned previously, many teams have progressed and learned over the years - the work they have put in has done bits and got them to where they are now. It's hard to determine which team will take the win or loss, it just depends on which team really wants it (not saying our boys in black didn't want it, but the games' the game is an easier way of saying it I guess). Wales is currently 2nd in our pool, putting NZ in 3rd so yeah, (NZ is to face Japan, but even if we score more points it may not be enough. Japan is not to be underestimated though, I consider them the 'underdogs' in my opinion but we'll see on the day of the match). It's more likely France will be the A-side and move to the semi's or quarters' (not too sure how it works lol). But, anything can happen. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the tournament, and of course we don't want to drag out the tournament out for too long; fair and square I suppose.

The NZRU's contempt for the game at grassroots is starting to see the chickens come home to the roost. They thought they could take club and provincial rugby for granted and starve them of money - every cent goes to the top - in the expectation that collapsing player numbers would be easily compensated by a conveyer belt of talent out of the elite schools and acadamies. Instead, we've bred a new generation of players who have been told how amazing they are since they were 14 years old, have had the red carpet laid out for them to walk along since they early teenagers, and who are lazy, greedy, entitled and mercenary in their outlook. Now when they look around for hard nosed players who are prepared to roll their sleeves up because they understand what work means they are not there anymore.

Ireland had a lot of famine emigrants (or deported by the British) to Australia and the USA, with the grand-father clause the IRFU could recruit young Irish-americans who began US footbal and whish to put their athletic qualities to use with rugby.
I'm convinced that Tuilangi is samoan for beast. The Baby Blacks have the backline to compete, but lack cattle in the pack. Size is an issue. They should still make the quarters though.

New Zealand will beat Japan with a bonus point and quality for a semi final as best 2nd place. Ireland will go through, but Australia will beat England and eliminate them both. South Africa will win their extremely competive pool, moving on, with 2nd place Georgia not having enough points.

South Africa 4. England 5. Georgia 6. New Zealand 7. Australia 8. Wales 9. Italy 10. Argentina 11. Fiji 12. Japan But if the Joeys have already beaten the Baby Blacks, Im definitely not surprised. They shared a pre tournament series one game each and are very evenly matched.
You just have to look at the Ireland-France game in the last 6N, it was the sort of quality of rugby that you only got to see at 3N (and even so, very rarely), never in a millions years in 6Ns.....but now, things have changed

Strange but from the point of France and Europe, we don't see like that. You haven't lowered your level in NZ and the big nations of the south, it's the big European nations that have raised theirs! Finally France in the lead, the big European nations have understood how to really make their Rugby a real Rugby pro from the youngest hopes in their clubs and academies. You knew how to do before us, we have now quite simply caught up with you on this point. And in the end, like the number, the human reservoir (even if the All Blacks actually loot all the best players from the independent islands around NZ ^^), and the finances, are largely to the advantage of the big European nations like France and England and even Italy now, more populated and richer than those in the south, the work pays! And now their level is very high too. You can still beat us of course but it will be much more difficult and less consistent than before... What we saw there is just logical therefore in view of the number and the real wealth compared. So no you are not less strong than before. The big nations of the south (NZ, AFS and Australia) remain very strong! It's just that now the big European nations have caught up with you, France in the lead, and are as strong as you, or even stronger currently. I remind the scores of the day: France 35 - New Zealand 14 Australia 10 - Ireland 30 England 53 - Fidji 7 Georgia 20 - Argentina 0 and to finish : South Africa 26 - Italy 34 ! I can't wait for the World Cup in France which is coming in 2 months! Because now there are many more teams than before and not only the big teams from the South who can win it. Incorrect. It’s shown the growth of French rugby. The ABs this year will definitely be stronger than last season. The trend was becoming clear after the coaching clean out halfway through last season.
I know this is ‘only’ U20s but that pitch is in a shocking state for a World Cup fixture. Reminiscent of 1980s British rugby. I thought we’d moved on from then. Still a good match though.
Watched all the games between North V South Hemispheres this round and clearly the forward power won through. Yes, the conditions favoured the North more so and well done to them, playing to their strengths. The response to this will come down to team culture and how well the Southern teams can respond to the coaches revised game plan to combat a forward dominated game. Hopefully for the NZ team at least a dry track is on the horizon.
@@Carbojaco To answer your point, I bet a dry track does when ever you play a New Zealand team. However my point is different weather conditions call for different tactics. Northern Hemisphere rugby conditions are, for the majority of the season traditionally wet where as Southern the opposite. The challenge is to combat the set piece drives and possibly change in attack mindset when the conditions are what we saw. Kia Ora!
@@robkeepa3315 As a Frenchman, playing against the All Blacks with this weather was as restrictive for you as it was for us. Our U-20 team has a game normally focused on movement and passing. And a muddy pitch and a slippery ball do nothing to help practice this style of play. I don't think Ireland was a fan of playing in those kinds of conditions either. So yes, it can be a plus depending on the team but not all the teams in the northern hemisphere. And I don't think either that the South Africans, who traditionally have a physically based game, were unhappy to have such weather, which suited them more than the Italians.
Not necessarily, Ireland and france at this level favour a running game with offloads, they just happen to be able to have better packs than their opposition. Watch the u20 six nations and see what they did to wales, italy, england and scotland when it was dry. England, Italy, Georgia and wales at this level favour a forward based technical game. So Ireland and France mostly had to switch it up but since they have better cohesion it wasn't too much to ask. Nz, australia and south africas problem is that they put together these sqauds way too late and also dont have an u20 super rugby championship, you could even add japan and fiji to the mix as well to make it more competitive. If they dont fix up, it may cost them over the next decade or so.
I see alot of kiwi fans struggling with the reality of what is happening here. It's understandable considering you're a rugby nation and in the eyes of most rugby fans you're the face of rugby. The french system will eventually lead to the french dominating world rugby at both club and international level. What other nation has two national leagues that is absolutely stacked with quality teams. France is completely self-sufficient in this sport. They have invested massively into building this system and this is just the beginning. France has a population of 70 million people. They have around 400k registered players and just under 2k teams. As the sport grows in france we can expect these numbers to spike. As an Irishman it almost feels comical right as Irish rugby has made huge strides forward, the french at the same time have transformed into rugby behemoths. Sadly if Ireland can't win the upcoming Rugby world cup i don't think we'll ever win one. I've no doubt NZ will remain one of the best nations in world rugby, you'll probably even win the upcoming WC with the current team you've got. However you've never had to face a threat like this. By the time the next WC roles around I'm not sure anyone will hold a candle to the french.

Hard to predict the future tbh, but France are definitely stacked with resources, as the OP said, even their second tier league is professional, actually iirc their D3 and even D4 are even semi professional. Loads of lower league games also televised apparently. Anyway France look like they will be at least a big force for the next decade, but it still comes down to 23 individuals plus coaches, so they will be getting challenged for sure. As for thinking this is Ireland's only chance of winning the RWC, all you can really ask of an organisation is to do its best, the IRFU like other rugby unions could improve some things for sure, but in terms of the men's national team and provinces, it's done a very good job overall. I think we have enough of a structure and decent players coming through to give hope of at least being competitive at the next couple of world cups, beyond that who knows! As for England, IMO they have an obvious example to look for and that is France, but their second division got a massive downgrade a few years ago, so unlike France they basically have only one professional league that has had an annus horribilis, think it's going to take a good while and need the right people in charge to get their structures sound, it won't help their national team in the meanwhile, but they still have the population and enough quality players to come up with decent teams, but possibly not consistently.
@harshbutfair8993 In regards to my opinion on Irelands' chances of winning a RWC, it's not a slight on how the IRFU are running things. Personally, I think they're doing an incredible job. It's not about what we're doing wrong but rather what France is doing right. Most of the world has yet to truly embrace rugby. Rugby remains a minnow sport in most of the major developed nations around the world. France is truly the first developed nation with a huge population that has not only embraced rugby but also built a professional structure. Just looking at some of the other rugby nations. England has major cash flow issues, and their clubs have started going bust. South Africa is still a developing nation. Although they can compete in regards to population and player base, they suffer from a lack of resources and have no national leagues. They remain reliant on mixed nation leagues. USA has yet to truly embrace the sport. If this changes, they could become a monster in rugby. It's hard to know if the sport will ever be able to compete with American football. Australia, I'm not even sure what's gone wrong. When it comes to countries like Ireland, NZ, Wales, and Scotland, we are minnows in regards to population and finances compared to France. I still think that NZ and Ireland, in particular, will remain highly competitive it's just really difficult to see anyone going toe to toe with France consistently. As for club rugby, we can already see the impact the French system has had on European rugby. The last three Champions cups and Challenge cups have been won by a French team. No Irish team has won a European Cup since 2018 despite this being one of our best groups of players and Leinster currently having what many would call a golden generation.
Preparation is key to the Northern Hemisphere teams beating the south . South Africa, New Zealand and Australia were just thrown together the last month or so. These European teams have been playing together for the last 6-24 months . If you watch the games closely you can see the difference in cohesion and structure . Realistically this is only the 2nd time this NZ team has played together, the games against Australia were trial matches with completely different teams in each game. Don't stress kiwis, Saffas and Aussies, I think with a better preparation these games would be a lot closer . Its not the skill that lacks, they just need more time together.

The northern hemisphere has the under 20 six nations . The southern hemisphere has no equivalent. These southern hemisphere teams were thrown together in the last month . The northern hemisphere have been playing together since before the start of the under 20 six nations . Some of them last year as well .
Don't quite agree with that. Our SH youngsters play a lot of top flight rugby and we have a lot of depth (or maybe used to). This NZ team today had a Sevens Star and some Super Rugby players who were left to look very ordinary as individuals if we want to be honest with ourselves. South Africa, Australia and Argentina followed suit in this department. If we are not preparing as you claim, who's fault is that? We need to give credit when credit is due. The game is growing in Italy, France and Spain in junior levels - its not in Australia and NZ. SA has its own problems with politics and having to ensure numbers are always right. The Europeans are doing a better job than us in their structures. The current French mens team with DuPont and co and Ireland come from these better structures. We're essentially looking at what the mens teams will look like in 5 yrs from now.

I put it on the NZRU, more time and money needs to be invested in the development of our young ones. They should of picked this under 20 team at least 3 months ago to give them time to gel as a team . Also I believe we're wasting to much time on players that aren't going to make it at the next level. Highlanders are an example in the super rugby, I personally think there is better 19 year olds in nz then there was in that super rugby squad. However they aren't being afforded the opportunity, you have to jump through hoops to even sign a senior super rugby contract when you're 19. Absolutely I give credit where its due. The Europeans have a great model that's working well . The one big difference between these teams like I said above is they have a junior 6 nations competition, the youth development is of a higher standard. Rugby is a team sport, and 6 individuals isn't enough to beat a well oiled 15 aside team. You are correct though a few individual performances were below par in the first half. I am pretty confident that if this team had spent 6-12 months together this score line wouldn't read the same.

@@geotruthnz7013 No you can't. When I watched your high school games on CZcams some of those grounds are not that good. You're looking for excuses - its the same for everyone. We could have had it in Joburg or Durban but then people like you will moan about altitude and hard grounds (yes the high school grounds are a lot harder up there vs Ellips Park etc that have special softer soil) or the humidity.

Money talks and it's showing more and more. I personally know 1 young man who has gone to Italy for a contract this week and I have 2 nephews playing pro rugby in Japan. We all know young one's who have been scouted by rugby league from our rugby schools. NZ talent is not limitless. Nevertheless we will still enjoy competing and enjoying whatever comes. Well done France, too good.
New Zealand aren't known for the physical style of play they prefer a fast paced running game.A couple of years a ago this style of rugby was stopped by physical dominance and rush defense.All thanks to the Boks.Then the rest of the world followed that blueprint and have had great success.For a while NZ rugby seemed to be stubborn and wouldn't change their approach to the game.But they realized change was needed and they started making changes to the game they play.They are not quite there yet but they are slowly coming to the party.For the first time in NZ rugby history they now have to play catch up and believe me when I tell you they will catch up sooner or later.Everyone was talking about and fearing this huge French forward pack.I was interested in this game because I wanted to see the battle upfront.I saw every carry every collision and every counter ruck and I admire these NZ boys for fronting up and bringing an absolute war and giving it all they got.There were times they made this French pack look quite normal.I can see that they most definitely are trying to change their approach to the game.Coming from a South African
Nz aren’t known for physical style because they prefer fast paced, flashy style rugby. But if they chose to play a physical game, don’t get it mixed up x they would dominate the boks. 1 the the boks lack, is Polynesian strength. & nz has an abundance

Seems like the old adage, its the forwards who determine who wins the game and the backs just determine by how much. It feels like the day of the smaller athletic forward is coming to an end and giant power forwards who can now go for 60+ minutes have arrived. The game plans for these bigger sized teams and the current rules of rugby have really allowed them to control the pace of the game and use their size to dominate the smaller SH forwards. Its quite noticeable that NZ loosies in particular are giving away quite a bit of size and it looks like the next generation arent going to change that.
100% agreed. A player of Posolo Tuilagi size & stature would never be selected in the NZ/AUS u/20 system because he would not be skillful and mobile enough. For example Uini Atonio born in NZ played for Counties Manukau. Went to France and now is anchoring the scrum for France national team.
@peterleasi5905 yes there does seem to be bias towards specific attributes in the NZ development and scouting system when identifying and promoting players for higher honours. Most of that criteria will come from the top and the brand of rugby they want to play. They will have to hope Robertson can unlock a winning game plan with these types of players as he's unlikely to have different types of forwards coming out of NZ for the next 6 years apart from the odd freak who is both massive AND has the requisite athleticism for a NZ forward.
Abs need to play more direct with forwards to build pressure and adapt to conditions and opposition. No good in going out wide or just panic kicking it back after 2 phases. The good ol say “it starts from up front” if the big boys in the tight 5 can’t get over the advantage line then it’ll be a long day at the office. France looking unstoppable at this rate.

It's because Rugby is well funded in Europe (not just France), there are more teams and more professional competitions. Most of these kids already have first grade experience, so they're already battle hardened from playing against Men at a young age. I say good on them, I love seeing other countries do well that aren't the usual All Blacks, Wallabies, or Springboks. France will win this years world cup no doubt, and maybe the next one too.

It's not just a question of money, it's also a question of demographics and the number of licensees in a sport. Ever wonder why it's always the biggest nations that win the most Olympic medals? The United States, Russia and China are more likely to win medals because they have many more athletes in their countries, and therefore more likely to have champions. It's simply mathematics, the calculation of probabilities. Add to that the financial resources and infrastructure to train them.
There's nothing extraordinary about the fact that France has a very good level today; it's just the logical evolution of their level of play after so much development and investment in such a large, developed country. What is extraordinary and incredible is that the All Blacks have dominated rugby for so many years. Genetics and their warrior people could partly explain this. I also imagine that rugby is a real religion over there.

@@mauroger86I mean the first try by France. Back line went in untouched. But the forwards got them right up to the try line. The weather there was also horrendous. It’s a u20s team. Some of these guys are professional some are not. Give them a break. Quality rugby.
And if it was this muddy and wet I’d have my 2 biggest guys get a lot of carries. It’s harder to run back line plays in these conditions.
Id say be this picky about the national teams but these guys are still developing. France played some excellent rugby. I loved the big guys carrying and it was amazing to see teammates just hold them up through the tackle.
That’s practiced that and you know they had to have tweaked the plan because of the weather. New Zealand also had some big lads but they could only match the energy of France for those 2 tries but had some good moments as well
Their backwards are very good too. Scary if we consider that their 3 best players have been retained for the wc preparation

I still have to watch the second half but I am still wondering about the NZ team tactics. Surely the coaching staff would have done some research on how the French forwards would play especially given the conditions? One of the lineouts we had at least 3 forwards not attempting to counter the obvious maul? They were very slow to respond and hanging off until way too late?
A gutsy 'leopard-like' performance from N Z U20's, however, this young French side were 'tigers'. Savage, unrelenting, powerful, huge. The ball-handling, craft, and speed of foot of the enormous French pack was so effective, in such dreadful weather conditions. As for the future of 'Les Bleus'? It seems well bloody secure with this crop of young men coming along. Hard luck NZ U20's.

Despite the loss, I see not only the French team improving and progressing as they go in the tournament but our boys in black as well. We're not only in to win or lose, but to learn too. I guarantee if there was rematch between these phenomenal teams, we'll see a change and possibly our boys capturing the win. These comments mentioning the 'downfall' and what not - what a load of BS. These youngins' are improving as they are going about playing for our country. So much potential, and i'm not giving up just yet. As an Irish fan, I would say In the big picture NZ will always be in the mix as a contender I believe, but it's not looking too likely that you will progress in this competition, as only one runner up gets out of the pools, you would need a lot of results in the other pools to go your way, bit of a severe format, but guess it doesn't drag out the tournament unnecessarily long.

@@harshbutfair8993 Yeah, I'm afraid so. I do agree, NZ are definitely contenders. As I mentioned previously, many teams have progressed and learned over the years - the work they have put in has done bits and got them to where they are now. It's hard to determine which team will take the win or loss, it just depends on which team really wants it (not saying our boys in black didn't want it, but the games' the game is an easier way of saying it I guess). Wales is currently 2nd in our pool, putting NZ in 3rd so yeah, (NZ is to face Japan, but even if we score more points it may not be enough. Japan is not to be underestimated though, I consider them the 'underdogs' in my opinion but we'll see on the day of the match). It's more likely France will be the A-side and move to the semi's or quarters' (not too sure how it works lol). But, anything can happen. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the tournament, and of course we don't want to drag out the tournament out for too long; fair and square I suppose.

The NZRU's contempt for the game at grassroots is starting to see the chickens come home to the roost. They thought they could take club and provincial rugby for granted and starve them of money - every cent goes to the top - in the expectation that collapsing player numbers would be easily compensated by a conveyer belt of talent out of the elite schools and acadamies. Instead, we've bred a new generation of players who have been told how amazing they are since they were 14 years old, have had the red carpet laid out for them to walk along since they early teenagers, and who are lazy, greedy, entitled and mercenary in their outlook. Now when they look around for hard nosed players who are prepared to roll their sleeves up because they understand what work means they are not there anymore.

The reason why ARU are pushing through with this is because of the funding that comes with womens rugby in terms of inclusivity! Auckland rugby is in MASSIVE TROUBLE!

You just have to look at the Ireland-France game in the last 6N, it was the sort of quality of rugby that you only got to see at 3N (and even so, very rarely), never in a millions years in 6Ns.....but now, things have changed

Finally France in the lead, the big European nations have understood how to really make their Rugby a real Rugby pro from the youngest hopes in their clubs and academies. You knew how to do before us, we have now quite simply caught up with you on this point.
And in the end, like the number, the human reservoir (even if the All Blacks actually loot all the best players from the independent islands around NZ ^^), and the finances, are largely to the advantage of the big European nations like France and England and even Italy now, more populated and richer than those in the south, the work pays! And now their level is very high too. You can still beat us of course but it will be much more difficult and less consistent than before...
What we saw there is just logical therefore in view of the number and the real wealth compared.
So no you are not less strong than before. The big nations of the south (NZ, AFS and Australia) remain very strong! It's just that now the big European nations have caught up with you, France in the lead, and are as strong as you, or even stronger currently.

Watched all the games between North V South Hemispheres this round and clearly the forward power won through. Yes, the conditions favoured the North more so and well done to them, playing to their strengths. The response to this will come down to team culture and how well the Southern teams can respond to the coaches revised game plan to combat a forward dominated game. Hopefully for the NZ team at least a dry track is on the horizon.
A dry track doesn't clear a 21 points margin... Trusting your youngsters to play with the pros does.

However my point is different weather conditions call for different tactics. Northern Hemisphere rugby conditions are, for the majority of the season traditionally wet where as Southern the opposite. Our U-20 team has a game normally focused on movement and passing.
And a muddy pitch and a slippery ball do nothing to help practice this style of play.
I don't think Ireland was a fan of playing in those kinds of conditions either.
So yes, it can be a plus depending on the team but not all the teams in the northern hemisphere.
And I don't think either that the South Africans, who traditionally have a physically based game, were unhappy to have such weather, which suited them more than the Italians.
Not necessarily, Ireland and france at this level favour a running game with offloads, they just happen to be able to have better packs than their opposition. Watch the u20 six nations and see what they did to wales, italy, england and scotland when it was dry.
England, Italy, Georgia and wales at this level favour a forward based technical game.
So Ireland and France mostly had to switch it up but since they have better cohesion it wasn't too much to ask.
Nz, australia and south africas problem is that they put together these sqauds way too late and also dont have an u20 super rugby championship, you could even add japan and fiji to the mix as well to make it more competitive.
If they dont fix up, it may cost them over the next decade or so.

I see alot of kiwi fans struggling with the reality of what is happening here. It's understandable considering you're a rugby nation and in the eyes of most rugby fans you're the face of rugby.
The french system will eventually lead to the french dominating world rugby at both club and international level. What other nation has two national leagues that is absolutely stacked with quality teams. France is completely self-sufficient in this sport. They have invested massively into building this system and this is just the beginning.
France has a population of 70 million people. They have around 400k registered players and just under 2k teams. As the sport grows in france we can expect these numbers to spike.
As an Irishman it almost feels comical right as Irish rugby has made huge strides forward, the french at the same time have transformed into rugby behemoths. Sadly if Ireland can't win the upcoming Rugby world cup i don't think we'll ever win one.
I've no doubt NZ will remain one of the best nations in world rugby, you'll probably even win the upcoming WC with the current team you've got. However you've never had to face a threat like this. By the time the next WC roles around I'm not sure anyone will hold a candle to the french.

I would also add England even though they are underachieving at the moment, with the financial and human ressources they have, they should be able to compete with France in the long run
Hard to predict the future tbh, but France are definitely stacked with resources, as the OP said, even their second tier league is professional, actually iirc their D3 and even D4 are even semi professional. Loads of lower league games also televised apparently. Anyway France look like they will be at least a big force for the next decade, but it still comes down to 23 individuals plus coaches, so they will be getting challenged for sure.
As for thinking this is Ireland's only chance of winning the RWC, all you can really ask of an organisation is to do its best, the IRFU like other rugby unions could improve some things for sure, but in terms of the men's national team and provinces, it's done a very good job overall. I think we have enough of a structure and decent players coming through to give hope of at least being competitive at the next couple of world cups, beyond that who knows!
As for England, IMO they have an obvious example to look for and that is France, but their second division got a massive downgrade a few years ago, so unlike France they basically have only one professional league that has had an annus horribilis, think it's going to take a good while and need the right people in charge to get their structures sound, it won't help their national team in the meanwhile, but they still have the population and enough quality players to come up with decent teams, but possibly not consistently.

In regards to my opinion on Irelands' chances of winning a RWC, it's not a slight on how the IRFU are running things. Personally, I think they're doing an incredible job. It's not about what we're doing wrong but rather what France is doing right.
Most of the world has yet to truly embrace rugby. Rugby remains a minnow sport in most of the major developed nations around the world. France is truly the first developed nation with a huge population that has not only embraced rugby but also built a professional structure.
Just looking at some of the other rugby nations.
England has major cash flow issues, and their clubs have started going bust.
South Africa is still a developing nation. Although they can compete in regards to population and player base, they suffer from a lack of resources and have no national leagues. They remain reliant on mixed nation leagues.
USA has yet to truly embrace the sport. If this changes, they could become a monster in rugby. It's hard to know if the sport will ever be able to compete with American football.
Australia, I'm not even sure what's gone wrong.
When it comes to countries like Ireland, NZ, Wales, and Scotland, we are minnows in regards to population and finances compared to France. I still think that NZ and Ireland, in particular, will remain highly competitive it's just really difficult to see anyone going toe to toe with France consistently.
As for club rugby, we can already see the impact the French system has had on European rugby. The last three Champions cups and Challenge cups have been won by a French team. No Irish team has won a European Cup since 2018 despite this being one of our best groups of players and Leinster currently having what many would call a golden generation.

I think NZ's decreasing dominance in U20s is spilling over to the increasing dominance of other teams when facing the All Blacks in more recent times.

Preparation is key to the Northern Hemisphere teams beating the south . South Africa, New Zealand and Australia were just thrown together the last month or so. These European teams have been playing together for the last 6-24 months . If you watch the games closely you can see the difference in cohesion and structure . Realistically this is only the 2nd time this NZ team has played together, the games against Australia were trial matches with completely different teams in each game. Don't stress kiwis, Saffas and Aussies, I think with a better preparation these games would be a lot closer . Its not the skill that lacks, they just need more time together.

@@mowerman60 mate what are you talking about . I’m talking about under 20 level not senior . These under 20 players don’t play in the rugby championship, barely any play in the super rugby either . The northern hemisphere has the under 20 six nations . The southern hemisphere has no equivalent. These southern hemisphere teams were thrown together in the last month . The northern hemisphere have been playing together since before the start of the under 20 six nations . Some of them last year as well .
Don't quite agree with that. Our SH youngsters play a lot of top flight rugby and we have a lot of depth (or maybe used to). This NZ team today had a Sevens Star and some Super Rugby players who were left to look very ordinary as individuals if we want to be honest with ourselves. South Africa, Australia and Argentina followed suit in this department.
If we are not preparing as you claim, who's fault is that? We need to give credit when credit is due. The game is growing in Italy, France and Spain in junior levels - its not in Australia and NZ. SA has its own problems with politics and having to ensure numbers are always right. The Europeans are doing a better job than us in their structures.
The current French mens team with DuPont and co and Ireland come from these better structures. We're essentially looking at what the mens teams will look like in 5 yrs from now.

Whos fault is it? definitely not the young men in this team . I put it on the NZRU, more time and money needs to be invested in the development of our young ones. They should of picked this under 20 team at least 3 months ago to give them time to gel as a team . Also I believe we're wasting to much time on players that aren't going to make it at the next level. Highlanders are an example in the super rugby, I personally think there is better 19 year olds in nz then there was in that super rugby squad. However they aren't being afforded the opportunity, you have to jump through hoops to even sign a senior super rugby contract when you're 19.
Absolutely I give credit where its due. The Europeans have a great model that's working well . The one big difference between these teams like I said above is they have a junior 6 nations competition, the youth development is of a higher standard.
Rugby is a team sport, and 6 individuals isn't enough to beat a well oiled 15 aside team. You are correct though a few individual performances were below par in the first half. I am pretty confident that if this team had spent 6-12 months together this score line wouldn't read the same.

It is, we will be lucky to make semis. This u20 result is a direct correlation to the nzru mindless destruction of club rugby and the introduction of b.s academies that only produce young kids who think they are rock stars at 16.

Posolo is born in Samoa but plays for Perpignan since 2010 he was 6 .

We've had these issues in New Zealand but we can still provide a good Rugby ground surface to play on.

You're looking for excuses - its the same for everyone. We could have had it in Joburg or Durban but then people like you will moan about altitude and hard grounds (yes the high school grounds are a lot harder up there vs Ellips Park etc that have special softer soil) or the humidity.

Money talks and it's showing more and more. I personally know 1 young man who has gone to Italy for a contract this week and I have 2 nephews playing pro rugby in Japan. We all know young one's who have been scouted by rugby league from our rugby schools. NZ talent is not limitless. Nevertheless we will still enjoy competing and enjoying whatever comes. Well done France, too good.

New Zealand aren't known for the physical style of play they prefer a fast paced running game.A couple of years a ago this style of rugby was stopped by physical dominance and rush defense.All thanks to the Boks.Then the rest of the world followed that blueprint and have had great success.For a while NZ rugby seemed to be stubborn and wouldn't change their approach to the game.But they realized change was needed and they started making changes to the game they play.They are not quite there yet but they are slowly coming to the party.For the first time in NZ rugby history they now have to play catch up and believe me when I tell you they will catch up sooner or later.Everyone was talking about and fearing this huge French forward pack.I was interested in this game because I wanted to see the battle upfront.I saw every carry every collision and every counter ruck and I admire these NZ boys for fronting up and bringing an absolute war and giving it all they got.There were times they made this French pack look quite normal.I can see that they most definitely are trying to change their approach to the game.Coming from a South African
Nz aren’t known for physical style because they prefer fast paced, flashy style rugby. But if they chose to play a physical game, don’t get it mixed up x they would dominate the boks. 1 the the boks lack, is Polynesian strength. & nz has an abundance

Maybe, but unlike many in the French team not many are pros yet.
Seems like the old adage, its the forwards who determine who wins the game and the backs just determine by how much.
It feels like the day of the smaller athletic forward is coming to an end and giant power forwards who can now go for 60+ minutes have arrived. The game plans for these bigger sized teams and the current rules of rugby have really allowed them to control the pace of the game and use their size to dominate the smaller SH forwards.
Its quite noticeable that NZ loosies in particular are giving away quite a bit of size and it looks like the next generation arent going to change that.
100% agreed. A player of Posolo Tuilagi size & stature would never be selected in the NZ/AUS u/20 system because he would not be skillful and mobile enough. For example Uini Atonio born in NZ played for Counties Manukau. Went to France and now is anchoring the scrum for France national team.
@peterleasi5905 yes there does seem to be bias towards specific attributes in the NZ development and scouting system when identifying and promoting players for higher honours. Most of that criteria will come from the top and the brand of rugby they want to play. They will have to hope Robertson can unlock a winning game plan with these types of players as he's unlikely to have different types of forwards coming out of NZ for the next 6 years apart from the odd freak who is both massive AND has the requisite athleticism for a NZ forward.
Abs need to play more direct with forwards to build pressure and adapt to conditions and opposition. No good in going out wide or just panic kicking it back after 2 phases. The good ol say “it starts from up front” if the big boys in the tight 5 can’t get over the advantage line then it’ll be a long day at the office. France looking unstoppable at this rate.
