- Hanyani Shimange is joined by former Rugby World Cup winning captain, John Smit and RWC 2007 winner Victor Matfield to preview the RWC 2023 semi-final between South Africa and England. In a repeat of the 2019 final, will the Springboks take victory again, or can England push on and make their second successive final?

Really entertaining anecdotes by these former boks. Shimmi is a great host
The best thing about SA still being in the RWC is that we can still watch these

He was a lineout master. Great skills as well
Retallick looked class and bossed the line out at the weekend too
John Smit, my all time favourite Springbok Captain. Humble man and great leader.
Amazing to listen to these legends and see no bias and speaking about the reality of playing in knock out world cup games. No matter England or Argentinas previous games, they gonna come in all guns blazing!
and while I haven't been privvy to watching a lot of Rugby World Cups because I am rather new to watching the sport. I can't imagine it getting much better than this. Amazing games so far.
The whole rugby world expects South Africa to roll over England with little difficulty, but the Springboks will not make the basic mistake of underestimating the opposition. They are extremely professional, well grounded and superbly drilled. It's great to see their spirit, and I fully expect to see them crowned champions at the end of this tournament.
J K and Jeff from the Breakdown can learn from these guy no bias and dnt take it 2 serious. We just love everything bout Rugby
I DO NOT expect anything less from either of the 4 semi finalist. Lessgooo ABs

Man, rugby okes are the best story tellers 😂.
PS: Big ups to the production team, sound is crisp 👊🏾
So great to see this fantastically positive, open, and intelligent conversation about Rugby. As a perpetually disappointed England supporter, it was great to witness such a refreshing perspective from such greats of the game. Bravo!
As a South African, I know not to take the English lightly. This game wont be a walkover like some are saying, need to respect our opponents. With that said, I do think the bokke will win if the boys are up for it.
I respect England but I also don’t like them, go the Bokkes
It definitely won’t be. As I’ve said before, they (England) actually have momentum on their side

This will be a tough encounter. Just ask the All Blacks how it is to face England in a semifinal. Lets not make the same mistake.
Great to listen to actual legends of the game who have been there and done it. No false bravado that was coming from the other camp that wears green before the quarters. AB supporter
I love this boks office, please can we have this even after the World Cup.
Shim is such a good host, casual but focussed
19:30 is such a good summary of De Allende and Kess Kriel and what those two boys bring to the team both with ball in hand and without ball during game play, said it before, people who doubt Kriel simply don't appreciate the job he does in defense and how important it is in the boks rush defense system, especially in knockout games. Am and Moody are absolute ballers, super stare but Jesse Kirel is an absolute workhorse and the unsung hero of the bok defense at 13.
no matter what kriel does he will never lace lukhanyo ams boots.
I want an official Shims podcast
He is amazing hey I hope he consider
My god, South Africa was amazing on Sunday. I learnt about the Marking/Scrum rule from playing Rugby 07. LOL Seeing the Bokkes do that brought back a lot of memories.

Just listening to this, makes you feel proud to be a Springbok supporter. England is always a challenge, but as long as we do the things we do, and not fall into the trap of doing what England does, and go negative, we should be ok.

I think its pretty safe to say both fans of NZ and SA want to see one another in the final. But we fans MUST NOT fall into the same hubris the french and irish did. They completely wrote NZ and SA off and look what happened! Both england and Argentina are more than capable of winning we must not write them off.
No they didn't wrote us off... They just thought they are the better Team.... and look what happens.... The rest is history.. 🎉🎉🎉🎉💪

Literally the same thing
Yes a SA vs NZ final is always great. That said Argentina will lift it, they owe the South a trophy
Why do people keep pushing this lie. They didn’t write Nz or sa off. Jesus Christ. Sa won by a single point and nz held on desperately, and also won cuz they held up a try. It was FINE MARGINS. Inches. Bounce of a ball. Not an easy win for any top 4 team.
We weren’t written off… no way. They expected to beat us (in a healthy manner) and isn’t that what we are like also ?
These guys are awesome. Makes me so proud to be a South African. Love it
SA v NZL is the final the world deserves
Can't see anything other than an England Argentina final TBH
@@smilingpig3 LOL!!!
As a kiwi this is awesome to listen to well done fellas great show.
As an Englishman I'm happy that we are in the semis. Our recent performances haven't been great, especially when you compare them to the performances of the Boks, ABs, France & Ireland. We're definitely not a form team and we are quite obviously the underdogs going into this game. But it's what happens on the day that counts and sometimes you just need to have a little faith. Who knows, we might just shock the world!! And if not, in the words of Pink Floyd, hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way!! 😀
Us and them 😊
AB's and Boks MIGHT HAVE PEAKED TOO SOON.
It’s the hope that kills
There’s no chance England beat South Africa.
@@desi1844shut it Indian
Form or rankings don't matter in knockout rugby. It's about who handles pressure well. Unfortunately the French and Irish were overconfident
An Irishman a Welshman an Australian and a Frenchman walk into a bar, usualy there is a South African as well, but they're still at the word cup.😊
As a Kiwi a Rocky 3 moment comes to mind for this semi final clash.
When they ask Mr. T (Clubber Lang) what he is going to bring to the fight........."pain".. 😆.
I think England are in for a world of it.
I think even at high school level the idea of a bench should be seen as crucial as the starters. If that attitude is adopted, I think you will see another form of SA rugby that will always keep SA in the top 5 in the world. Rassie & Jacque have made SA rugby fun to watch!
Great to see these legends with a smile on their faces
Amazing interview and show! Love the sense of humour, it reminds us we have a lot more in common than we don’t. Come on England I have a bet on so we better play a blinder! That’s exactly what we will have to do to beat this amazing south African team. May the best team win. Peace and love to everyone
John and his Bakkies stories get me every time😂😂😂love it❤
We can take England on this weekend, it will not be easy. England has been doing the work quietly.
Beating tier 2 teams

Love the banter amongst these legends. Great honest analysis. We can't relax for this weekend's game against England. Go Bokke!!!!🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
John, Vic, you guys are such great ambassadors of the sport.
The Bakkies story was hilarious, popping him for playing for the queen🤣🤣🤣
Couldn't wait for this week's BoksOffice. Let's go!
Kriel and de Allende criticism I think also comes down to the style of game the Boks played previously. Plus Am was quite brilliant.
The pleasure of havimg Rassie is that he has built a team that plays for the team and not themselves. Or at least thats what I hope judging by how important the Bomb squad has become. And also Siya mentioning how those who arent in the game day sheet helps around in training and boost the selected team morale.
I've really really enjoyed these BOKS OFFICE shows, aside from the actual games with the Boks, this is a great addition. Watch all the other ones as well but the episodes with the Boks legends has been incredible. Feel like the gents just chilling having a drink and talking rugby and the old days of when they also played. Good laughs and great host. Shimmi has been doing a great job as host, keeps it very relaxed and not "interviewy".
Esterhuizen and Moodie have proven themselves to be an excellent centre pair. Hope they will get some game time, also Grant Williams. These guys are super talented.
I agree but I think DDA and Kriel are playing so well that you just can’t change them so late into the tournament. But I’d start Moodie for KLA on Saturday. (Nothing against KLA he’s amazing)
@@Stubz_g DDA might actually work very well on flank. But yes
@@Stubz_g DDA and Kriel have done well.
Can you just stop these nonsense of Esterhuizen, do you even watch the World cup games cause by now you should know that DDA is the best inside centre in World rugby
Rassie knows best
I totaly agree, this could be a dangerous game for us. They'll have a point to prove and they play a low risk high percentage game.
When I introduced my now-wife to rugby, I showed her the toughest position to be play on the field, and that's the referee. Of all the positions on the field, those are by far the most difficult boots to be in.
Love the variation in the Team, it's something that was needed in the Springbok game.
Such a great show this. I wish we had this every year.
I''m glad they took a moment to speak about the referees. Every single post after the games the losing team is blaming it on the referee. It's becoming boring, they are not robots, it's impossible to get every single decision correct. They are trying to compete with the noise of the crowd, the pressure of the occasion, they are trying to be in the right place on the field at all times, their vision obscured by random limbs in the breakdown ect. There is so many variables into every decision and arm chair rugby fans sitting at home saying that's wrong decision. You have to understand that sometimes a decision that is wrong is going to go your teams way sometimes the oppositions team. At the end of the day you have 80 minutes, it's 15 v 15 if there referee gets a decision or two wrong during the game and you think that's enough reason why your team lost, obiovusly your team didn't play well enough in the 80 minutes.
Perfectly put!
Remind me which staff put out a video criticizing the referee and pointing out all the missed calls a year ago, which lead to the ref’s family receiving death threats? Could that have had an even unconscious impact on margin calls maybe?
Can you tell me why South Africa are having the same referee for 3 games now. It is better to have a ref that does not belong to a team thats in the running to win the world cup. This ref happens to be ftom Niew Zeeland. Can you imagine, Niew Zeeland are in the running for the world cup, and this ref can have a very strong influence in the run up who will face Niew Zeeland. SO its easy to say not to blame the ref, but it is obvious to note that a South African world cup will mean a back to back win, and the leader by winning 4 world cups. Another important thing to think about is that the All Blacks won a world cup without South Africa participating. This will be a smack in the face and proves that South Africa are clearly the best team. BUT the ref can change that with at times being blatant.
@@pierre4322 Can we agree that being a rugby referee is an impossible job? is there anything about the referee discussion on this podcast that you disagree with or would add to?
@@pierre4322a year ago?
I really enjoyed this talk - truly arresting to hear people who know what they're talking about - right down to the turf and head butts. Great show - I listened to the whole thing unlike all the others where I tuned out half way already.
Fantastic conversation between some legends of the game... Thanks for this!
Rooting for England from Wales. If you guys can put on an 80 minute performance you can win it.
Thank you Brother!
It's about who can hold out the longest. If both teams play to their full potential, I can't see England going through.
Brilliant show guys from an ABs fan. Matfield was my favourite bok.

Love these discussions guys. In the company of champions, always honored and still grateful to have seen us win 3 titles already ❤Well done boys and please keep this 'Boks Office' show active after the WRC!!
You seriously aren't ashamed by the 1995 SF? Go watch it it is on you tube. Read testament book from Kruger to know the truth about the non try given to SA by gold watch Bevan. No shame Boks. At least in Wrestling they don't pretend games aren't fixed.
I think it was the shadiness of Bakkies that turned me off from the Boks when I started playing rugby. But over the years, I ended up playing with more South Africans than from any other foreign country (in USA). That, along with watching them over the years I've developed an immense respect for the people of South Africa and their team. Supporting Argentina til their knocked out, Boks thereafter
So beautiful for me as a Durban born 70 year old to be here.
Love these boys, I think Boks will win but it will be tough.
The Springboks depth goes insane especially when lead right
Wow, love Victor, saying" you can never underestimate the KIWI'S(AB) that's the worst thing you can ever do", while also crediting the English team that they can beat the Springboks. Really like it when teams are not underated or over glorified because as we may understand, a team to participate in a world cup has really done the work, and to reach the semi's is something else. Saturday night will be a long night for me, while I pray for my homeboys SA.
Great listen to these guys. Great rugby insight and not bias either.
This is none of the reasons why I have my son playing rugby, the comraderie and it builds character for sure. It did that for me, although I did not play near to their levels.

You should watch the match in Ukraine or Isreal or any country under war. Then maybe you would respect your country just a little.
Awesome to listen to these guys - they were so good in their day, I wonder if they're going to go coaching?
I am really angry at myself for only discovering this show now 😂😂. Hilarious
Love the honesty, "we were outplayed by France"
If England can turn the Semi Final into an arm-wrestle then they certainly have a chance of upsetting the defending champions, but if the Springboks are able to play expansively like they did against France, I don't see England making it to the Final.
After knocking the heavily favoured Irish out of yet another Quarter Final, the All Blacks are expected to win the other Semi Final. Argentina though are a side capable of causing an upset and have beaten the All Blacks twice in the last three years, including a game in New Zealand, so I won't write them off.

I think that the AB coaches would say the same thing. England are more at home against the big Southern Hemisphere rivals in terms of style and approach. You have to beat them. I think that the Bokkie will beat them up.

As an England fan I just can't see anything other than a Bok win even if they don't hit the heights of last week. England have done as well in this competition as is realistic, so I just want to see them give it all and see where they end up at the end.
Good luck with that one
Most Irish fans didn't write off anyone we knew NZ and SA were massive threats. Oh course you always have arrogant fans online (with every team) but 99% of thr people I know were optimistic but realistic about Ireland's chances. And the team didn't write off anyone, they gave 110% with both teams. It just wasn't enough with NZ.
Best of luck to NZ and SA, you have given us some of the most exciting rugby games we've seen in years, cant decide who deserves the cup more.
Those games would not have been at that level (possibly the two best RWC quarter finals ever played) if not for the contributions of the French and Irish teams. Both games could have gone either way. The Irish time at the RWC will come if they continue to produce incredible teams such as the current one. Anyone who claims to know with certainty which team will win this RWC is cluess.
Bok supporter here, I’m really really disappointed Ireland didn’t manage to get through, what a great team Ireland has and credit to the ABs but I really want both Ireland and France to keep developing their game, keep building up their squad depth and maintain that consistency because I honestly believe these 2 teams could become 2 northern hemisphere powerhouses on par with the ABs and the Boks.
Well Virgin sports media and most of the Irish pundits thought otherwise. They have egg on their faces.
Nice to see you’ve recovered from Cafe Oz John

I love how the South Africans are being polite about this game !!!😂😂 I'm English but we are gonna get absolutely battered !! It's easily gonna be the most one sided semi final In world cup history !!!
I doubt that. May happen, but this English side has significant talent and the England team usually turn it up in the knickout stages and have a serious RWC pedigree.
Thats South Africa such great, humble people,
Its God that is the greatest for them, not themselves.

Lot of jokes in this one just in the first 5 minutes.. nothing wrong with jokes, unless you don't get them
You are too serious, jokes are part of the reason why this show is unique

When are jokes unnecessary?
Agree with Michael. Jean and Co spend too much time on jokes and too little time on analysis and serious discussion.
I was one of the SA fans knocking Damien De Allende and at times Jesse Kriel but they shut me up good ever since 2019 watching there work rate in the game.
You and me the same.

Not a Springbok fan at least since Vic and Montgomery but North vs South our hemisphere dominates Rugby still always a proud South African when the country does good, but to beat England I feel like you have to go out the gate and pound on pressure, Springboks when they're ruthless to me is the best i.e. the last Springbok team I supported fully was 2007 and that in my opinion was the best Springbok team ever although the rugby played now in general is the best it's ever been. Goodluck.
