How to Ride A Spyder Motorcycle - Riding Tips

- Here's how to ride a Spyder motorcycle. In my case, it's a 2020 Spyder RT Limited. I cover everything from starting it to putting gas in it to shifting and braking. I keep it very straightforward for new riders, but I also call out what's different for all those experienced bikers like me.
Also, I include lots of riding tips and commentary throughout the video. I cover things like intersections, where my eyes are looking, visibility, curves, hills, and much more.
I hope you enjoy it and get something out of it. If you are considering purchasing your first Spyder I think you'll find this very helpful. And if you already ride a motorcycle or another 3-wheeler, I think you'll find this informative about the Spyder.

I just purchase a new Sea to Sky. My wife purchased a new Spyder LT last year. I put over 1000 mi on hers and It has been my. observation the bikes are built like tanks and extremely comfortable once you learn to relax and let the bike do its thing. The Rotax engines are built in Austria. I believe Rotax engines are also used in ultralight aircraft. The motorcycle club I belong to has a number of long term Spyder owners- they are all highly complimentary of the bikes and highly recommend them. That's why I purchased one after 57 years of riding motorcycles.
Congrats on the new purchases! Yes once I relaxed on it, relaxed my grip, and let it do its thing, it is very comfortable and handles great. I am thinking about a new sway bar but will see. Ride safe.
They
are fun to ride. I have a 22 RTL and my wife has a 23 S2S.
I have a 2016 Can-Am Spyder RTS SE6. The Spyder color is Orbital Blue. The ride is awesome and love riding. I'm a Blue Knight with tge Blue Knights International M/C. Oh your Spyder is saying give be a bath LOL 😂 You have a beautiful Spyder. Safe riding, always wear your gear and watch out for cagers, but most of all enjoy the ride. GDoc
Anyone trying to make hard turns and curves, you just lean your upper body into the curve and put all your weight on the opposite side foot. The RT doesn't do it quite as good, but the F3 if you learn how to do it, you don't have to slow down for anything, besides popping a wheel off the ground a bit, and can lose all the bikes in the twisties. They are really fun trikes.
I hear a better sway bar makes it feel better, or at least different, but I agree even stock it's amazing what you can do in curves once you are comfortable with your ride. Ride safe.
I had a Slingshot that i loved untill i had knee and back issues. Never riden a motorcycle orher than being passenger. My husband took it upon his self to trade the SS fir a 2023 HD Freewheeler. Beautiful trike but i can't get used to clutching and shifting gears constantly. Needless to say i hate it. We went to look at Cam am spyder and i fell in love with it and felt so comfortable on it. As soon as we sell the trike i will be owning a spyder . Being a 72 yo Nana i feel so lucky to be so active and wanting to get on the road. Thank you for such an informative video.
The wife and l...bought spyders last summer...ive had Harleys in the past...but can ams are the best things ever..love em😊😊😊
Couldn't agree more! Ride safe.
Two months away from 64 y o and I went last weekend to look at Spyder RT; first bike ever. Because of a medical condition, I thought the regulations might be different for two in front. We shall see. I can't believe how at home I felt sitting on this bike at the dealership. Thanks for this video! It makes me more eager, if that's possible.
Good luck! It's a great way to go if you havent ridden before or even if you have. And its comfort is great for so many of us. Lots of great options but in the end ride what makes you happy.
I own a 2024 Sea to Sky. I love it. The Marine Corps made sure that I was not physically capable of riding two wheels any longer. The Spyder is far more stable and comfort than my Intruder. I can now ride all day without pain. The Can Am is worth the money. I never have rode two up. I didn’t want the responsibility. My wife wants to go with me and enjoys the ride. I’m hoping that she will want one for herself.
Ride your ride, and have fun doing it! Ride safe sir.
Heading out this weekend to check out a Spyder RT sea to sky. My retirement gift to me!!
Wow hope you find a great deal! Happy retirement!!! Ride safe.
I bought my spyder in 17. Never had my harley back out still have my 2016. Love it
Glad to hear you are loving your spyder. Ride safe!
I'm in England 🇬🇧 and rode bikes for 25 years before adopting cars for my health and the need to transport my son when he was young. I'm feeling the urge to get on the road and feel alive again basically. I have terminal cancer along with diabetes and a heart condition but just have a deep yearning to try one of the Spyder RT's before it's too late for me. The more I see, study, watch and learn the more I want one... Thanks for a great video. 👍
Bless you Darren and what you are going through. I wish you all the best, and I hope that you try out the Spyder. The wind in your face feels so great even when it's not on 2 wheels! Ride blessed.
@RideBlessed Thank you for your kind words, really appreciate them. You and purpleonthree are great inspirations. 💜
Very good video thanks for taking us on the ride I enjoyed watching and listening to you cover all the things about the Spyder . I took the Spyder coarse last year but we only got to ride them in the parking lot would love to try one out on the road . my bikes have been in the shed since October and probably be May before we get them out again we have a short season here in New Brunswick Canada. thanks again for the ride and enjoy your trip to the Black Hills sounds like fun be safe and take care
Thank you neighbor. Enjoy getting out there when the weather lets you up there :)
I am seriously looking at a touring type Spyder. Ive ridden pretty much all my life. From racing to crotch rockets to cruising. Life got in the way in 2015 and I had to have my lower left leg amputated. I get really depressed every Spring as I start seeing the bikes out on the road. Until I found out about the paddle shifting on the Spyder. That trip to Alaska may still be doable !!
Love your attitude! Yes check out the RT Limited or the Sea and Sky models. Have fun and ride safe!
Great video. It's nice to see someone who is genuine in their review. The info you provided was fantastic . I was kind of on the fence, but now I want one. Thanks for the info
Glad it was helpful! Ride safe.
Great video. Definitely appreciate how informative you are and you lay things out in an order that's easy to follow. Keep doing your thing out there and online 👍
I appreciate that @snowmanii ! Ride safe.
I sold my last motorcycle over 10 years ago, then my wife and I got into long range self-contained bicycle touring. I have bicycled from Portland OR to San Diego 3 times (1,700 miles) since I retired. I am now 76 years old. I never thought I would ever own a motorcycle again ... but watching this video is causing me to reconsider. Now my wife and I are thinking about a Can Am Spider RT to travel across the US. This video is so well done to explain so many things that I would want to know about riding the Can Am Spider. Thanks
So glad you found it helpful. Best of luck, hope you find something you love, and ride safe! Feel free to post more questions- there's a great community of Spyder riders here. You can click my channel info as well and get my email address if you want to go that route.
Hey, I'm late 79 yrs and own a 2014 Spyder RT Limited, rode 2 wheeler for years, quit riding for 3 years until I bought the Spyer. Go for it very easy to ride and no I have no affiliation with BRP. Everything thing said in this video is true. REALLY good points about riding invisible!!!!!!!
Great video buddy thanks for showing us the steps for starting and shifting the spyder i tried one last year but it was just in a parking lot didn't get to go on the road but really enjoyed it . thanks again for going over the bike with us hope you have a great trip with your friends ride safe
You got it, thank you, and best of luck on any Spyder endeavors you pursue!
Excellent video, sir. Thank you! God bless! I just got a 2013 Can-Am spyder RSS learning to ride my first time beginner.
Thank you! Hope you enjoy your Spyder. Ride blessed 🙂
Nice video! This October I purchased a 23 sea 2 sky It's hard to get it back to the barn, I like to stay out there. They are a joy to ride.
Yes, so much fun being out there. Ride safe!
Excellent content my brother. Very informative. Continue to ride Blessed
Much appreciated, and back at you!
I love the video, I have been riding two wheels for 20 years (Harley”s ) and I have back problems so I have been thinking of trying one of these Spyder’s out. Thanks for the video 😊
You are very welcome. Best of luck and I hope a Spyder works out for you!
Good video, lots of good information. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great to see your video and I appreciate your candor and descriptions of how you ride.
I have switched and I'm so happy I did ! I traded a 100th Anniv. Road King and bought a 2015 Tri Glide 2 years ago due to minor balance issues. Just sold it and bought a one owner 2018 F3 Limited. It is great and fun to ride, unlike the Tri Glide which always seemed like a chore to ride. Even as you mentioned, the front was always heavy to turn and the reverse was sometimes a pain, especially if you needed to reverse uphill, even a little. My wife bought a 2017 F3 Limited right after I bought the Tri Glide, and she really loves riding it. We also have an adult daughter that has Cerebral Palsy and what she bought had passenger armrests and driver backrest so we put our daughter on it and she loves riding with us. It also has a trailer hitch so we found a used trailer from a guy that sold his Gold Wing and we bought it and I wired the lights. We can put her wheelchair in the trailer, along with lots of luggage and go anywhere as a family.
Anyways, I took hers in for a sprocket recall service a month ago, (most 2015-2019 need this recall done) at which time I had a chance to really ride it and I decided right there I was selling my Tri Glide. I do miss the rumble but that's all I really miss.
Thanks again for your video and keep the rubber side down !
So great to hear your story. I hope your daughter loves getting out there despite having Cerebral Palsy. We have such similar stories. I had a Ultra Classic, then stopped riding for a while, then the 2015 Tri-Glide, and now the 2020 Spyder RT Limited. My wife won't ever want her own bike, but I like having her riding with me anyway so all good. I really want to get a trailer too, and have someone trying to sell me one. But I need to budget the trailer, and the hitch kit, and doing the wiring if easy. Enjoy your riding time, and ride safe!
I really wish it had the hand brake on it from the factory. I added the adjustable wind deflectors to mine ,they help get you more cool air in the summer.
I’m subscriber 288.
I appreciate the information you’re sharing.
Keep it up.
I’m going from a HD Road King to a Spyder.
Thanks for the sub! And best of luck on your transition to a Spyder. Ride safe.
I just got a rt 2023 Ltd never rode a motorcycle ❤ it
Congrats! Ride safe. Check out MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) msf-usa.org lots of good info and I think locations for local safety courses.
Best purchase I ever made, let me continue riding feeling safe and comfortable 79 yrs young
Right on! Ride blessed sir.
Very helpful to someone who plans on buying this model soon.
Hey thanks. I've had it since about Sep of last year so shoot me any additional questions. Happy to help if I can. Ride safe.
@@RideBlessed my only concern, after watching tons of video commentary, is reliability. Most people seem to have no issues, but there are some horror stories.
@@SpyderMinimalist yes valid concern when spending this much money. Harley has that reputation for sure but I never had any major problems across the 2 Harleys I had. For spyders, I haven't seen any particular common issues that I recall. Well, at least on the RT, the mirrors really shake in the wind but that's minor. I recommend hitting sites/forums like SpyderLovers.com and ask questions there. Ride safe.
Helpful video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Ride safe.
I'm currently riding a 2017 Tri Glide that I had to switch to due to bad knees. I'm thinking I may have to switch to a spyder due to a bad shoulder. Very informative video. Thanks
Welcome! Best of luck to you- I sure enjoyed my Tri-Glide but I love my Spyder RT Limited now for SURE
Nice to hear from you like i said im looking into Spyder RT i think ill feel safer then a Yamaha Tricity 300 . And du to pain in the back . I had befor a 2020 Honda Forza 300 but a Maxie Scooter a nice bike that i should have not sold we live a learn i think the tricity has to go because of back pains im 64 now i dont think ill get any better . Ive been thinking about come home to new york and look far a GOOD used low miles and ture the U.S. like i said ive seen most all of up state new york and a lot of the North east states . would love to see more of the south all in all see and ride around the us Starting my Golden years be for get to old . Ok it was great talking to you Have a great day.
ive had 4 spyders ,still have 2 ,i love 4rideing them
Congrats! Yep loving the RTL. To be honest, I don't know what the Sea and Sky would have that would make me switch up to it...
I have a Harley trike myself. Lost three fingers on my left hand. Clutch is very hard for shifting. I'm very interested in the spider. I'm going to check them out for sure. Have to find out where they sell them in Montana around Bigfork.
Hope you find a good location to do a test ride and see if it's a fit for you. Have fun and ride safe!
Thank you for the video. I'm looking at buying one of these soon and this was very helpful. I've never riden any motorcycle or trike ever so wish me luck.
You asked for questions so here it is.
What are the weaknesses in the bike? Meaning what was your experience in what breaks first.
I realize its a machine and all machines wear out but some things are weaker than others.
In my experience, what breaks first are the shocks for the seat and for the rear storage trunk. They are fairly easy to do yourself, but they do seem to go out quickly. Other than that, I've had no issues at all and don't remember any specific reports of issues people are having. Just keep it maintained, and keep tires on it, and ride safe!
Very informative video thanks for posting this. U do have a quick question. I noticed the handlebars have a longer reach than a stock RT. Can you tell me what kind they are?
I think they are called short reach bars. From can am. Came with the spyder when I bought it, along with the originals. Wasn't sure I would leave them on but turns out it is a super comfortable riding position on long trips!
I've never rode a motorcycle, but have always wanted to have that experience. My back and knees couldn't handle a 2 wheeled machine. Thank you for this video, it gives me confidence in moving forward.
How does night riding feel? Good visibility?
Hope to see you on the road so we can reason together.
I think night riding feels fine. Not a big fan of night riding especially when I was on 2 wheels. But on the Spyder I feel like there's more lights from the motorcycle, and I also feel safer about having to turn quickly if something comes up on the road. Ride safe!
been riding quite a while I turn 73 next month have 3 cruisers in the garage one being a ultra classic screaming eagle havent rode in 5 years due to having balance issues. I'm picking up a 2020 spyder limited Wednesday wish me luck as when test rode left foot wants to shift left hand wants to use the clutch and the right hand the front brake it seems like it's easier if I can convince my old brain thanks for your help
Yep I had to unremember the same things! Sometimes I still reach for a lever or try to shift lol. Have fun and ride safe!
We are heading to deadwood for rally as well hope we meet up we are riding a 2019 RT limited kinda blueish greenish color lol
Have fun and ride safe!
I seen some reviews on the Spyder that they were high maintenance to keep running . Quite a few issues with some of them , especially the
2013 Spyder. I was thinking of buying one , but now I'm on the fence . After paying big money for one , you don't want to keep spending lots of money to repair them. You would think that they would have quality workmanship .
I did a lot of research before moving from Trike to Spyder. Like you, I also wanted to understand maintenance costs and history. I can't say I know much about models older than 2020. I hit the youtube channels, read the big Spyder online forums, and did what I could to be as informed as possible. In the end I was convinced it was a good move for me. I think I'll have to end up replacing the rear tire more often than on the Trike, but even that will depend on riding frequency and style.
If you haven't already, start asking questions out in places like SpyderLovers.com. Great place to get just about any Spyder related question answered.
Best of luck to you @edwardwiebe8080 !
Looking at getting a 24 F3T, however I was wondering on the limited can you take off that top cargo storage area to make it look like a f3t instead of limited?
I haven't done it but yes you can and it looks pretty easy actually. Here's a short video that shows it: czcams.com/video/1l8XhPdkGRo/video.html
Ride safe!
I still reach for the brake and clutch. I often find two fingers looking for the levers. I find my right wrist stays flatter because I’m not twisting as much to get the desired speed. I think the Spyder is a safer option to ride.
Same! Old habits are hard to break
What is the longevity of these things, like how many miles are the engines capable of 300,000 - 400,000, an have you ever pulled a trailer with it, how does it handle with a trailer? I like your channel an this video will definitely subscribe
Great question @RideWithJayy. In the research I did when looking at all the options, I was impressed with the Rotax engines. They are used for ATVS, spyders, and even airplanes. One forum I saw said should last 12 years or more. Another said they are very smart and fuel efficient. ATV folks said at some point they may have to have timing chain work, but I only ever saw that on ATV-related posts.
I have a question about the Spyders sort of low ground clearance...Do you ever smack your radiator going over, say speed bumps or over a dip? I had a new gen VW beetle a few years back, that the previous owner had put some low profile racing wheels on. At one store in particular i frequented, no matter how I tried to make the turn, Id bottom out and it hit the radiator every time. (Bottom out as in just hitting the bottom of the radiator, it seemed to hang down quite low) The low hanging radiators on the Rykers and Spyders make me think of it every time I see them. I have been looking quite closely at getting a Spyder but we have horrible roads, lots of dips and speed bumps, potholes, etc...Just curious of your thoughts?
Good question! No, I haven't had any problems with low ground clearance so far. Ironically, I DID actually rub the exhaust a few times when I had the Tri-Glide. I was going to put a lift kit in partially for more comfort and better handling but also for the additional clearance. But no I haven't had those issues on the Spyder yet.
Can anyone else weigh in on this? Any experiences you have had?
Take a MSF class, they are alot of fun and you will learn something new.
Looking ahead, not where you are. I think that will solve my problem. I can't turn for crap. It’s about trust.
I can't watch this video until your bike gets cleaned. It make me cry.😭
Embarrassing for sure. Forgive me?!
do you blip the throttle when downshifting like on a regular bike?
No, no need when shifting up or down on the Spyder
Man enjoy your Black Hills ride and take video!
How do people deal with riding the syder rt in snow and ice? Or is that possible?
Good question. Personally, I haven't ridden much in snow and ice. But I would venture to guess that a Spyder would do better in snow and ice than most other options to be honest. Front wheel stability, large contact surfaces, power assisted steering, ABS, auto-adjusted air suspension... I would think that would all give you more control in snow and ice situations than other options.
I'll be honest. I had to look up the gas cap access. That's on me though.
By the way @ShowChrome, love your products! I have a whole list of things I want to get for my 2020 Spyder RT Limited. Good stuff!
So when you start slowing down do you hit the break and start easing off the throttle?
You can ease up on the throttle and you'll start slowing down. As you slow, the Spyder will down-shift for you when appropriate. Or, you can let off the throttle completely and use the brake as lightly or strongly as the situation dictates. Again, the Spyder will down-shift for you as appropriate. Do you have a Spyder? Are you riding already? Ride safe.
@@RideBlessed I bought one it’s still at the place I’m getting my break peddle adjusted but I will have to pick it up I had a Harley but I traded it in for the three I didn’t drive the Harley … I was thinking as soon as I took my hand off the throttle it would stop like a two wheel
@@Lboogie90 yes the throttle works just like a motorcycle, and brake pedal too. You just dont have to use a brake lever as the pedal applies brakes to all wheels. If you can ride a motorcycle you will pick it up quickly
Hi i enjoyed Your Spyder tips i had a 72 450 honda back in 78 i was all over Long Island and up state New York i loved the bike . But after time i put it away life starts girl friend then a family family life and then one day kids move out and i look back and has been 40 years gone by like a blink of en eye but these last 40 years have been in Norway my love is a sweet Norwegain girl . i said to the kids i wanted a Motorcycle again everyone said no to me i was to ( OLD ) i did not like that but i saw what ment and understood but wife she said if i wanted to start again tri a 3 wheel trike Maxie Scooter so i bought a 2022 Yamaha Tricity 300 Its just like the Yamaha X Max the only thing the Tricity has 2 front wheels love the bike knowing haveind that extra front wheel for safty when the road should get wet . I to suffer from back pains i have been looking in to the Spyder RT Limeted i have looking into it tast summer keep up with your fine show sorry about my bad english i wasent the best student bake in 78 and its been 40 years thank`s
What a life you have lived and continue to live! Thanks for sharing your story and best of luck checking out the Spyder RT Limited. Mine is a great fit for me. Ride safe!
I’ve owned a RTL four years now. Went from a Goldwing which I loved, but because of knee replacements and wanting to ride with my wife we had to change. Love the Spyder. I’ll give you a 👍🏻 on the video content. But you get 👎🏻👎🏻 for the appearance of the Spyder!! Man you need to clean that before you do a video.
Thanks, and yes I'm embarrassed at how dirty it was in that video :( Ride safe.
I would prefer to see all the controls and know what they do , before you start riding. I see your garage and phone.
Fair enough. Maybe I can do another video focused more on the controls. Challenge is they have changed over time so could only cover mine. Thanks and ride safe!
Is riding a spider the kind of like riding a 4 wheeler
Na, handles totally different. Much more fun too!
😀👏👍
Thanks! Ride blessed
You lost me at “I HAD to lay my bike down”.
Yep that was my first bike, I think it was a Suzuki GS500? Maybe 550? Never any situations since then... knock on wood. Ride safe.
Lots of dirt!!!! Clean your bike!!! I bet you kept your Harley clean.
Fair enough. Embarrassing how dirty it was when I shot that video. Yep, the Harley trike stayed pretty clean. Ride safe.
Dirty bike means lots of rides or too long in storage.
You might want to spend more time keeping that thing clean and less time making videos…. Just saying
I have to agree with that - so embarrassing!
If you need a tutorial on how to ride a 3 wheeler maybe you shouldn't be riding one
Not true. There are a lot of skill sets that you learn while riding a Spyder.
If you've never riden one ,how are you going to learn ? 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
Can you change Fahrenheit to Celsius ? but leave Speedo in MPH for us Englanders ? youtube@flapjackandbeans I have liked and subscribed
Hello from across the pond! Good question. I remember another video where someone was covering the same topic but couldnt get it quite working. Let me try to track that down for you. Ride safe.
