Hi Francis a little suggestion when you travel to places that went under Old Spain rule kindly feature the architecture. Ganda ng Cartagena and some of us can be inspired with their architecture.
Kpag sinakop tlga ng Spain. Nag-iiwan cla ng Spanish Architecture gya ng meron tyo sa loob ng Intramuros at sa Vigan

I can’t wait to return to Latin America in my future travels. I find it very thrilling to go there. Don’t get me wrong. It’s nice to visit developed countries with advanced economies but the thrill is not there. You buy a plane ticket, take an Uber, buy a metro card then wander around English-speaking locals. It’s a fairly convenient, easy travel to deal with.
Latin America is not like that. It’s an adventure that can potentially go bad if unprepared.
PLEASE have a working proficiency of Spanish or Portuguese (if visiting Brasil) because traveling to Latin America is definitely NOT FOR ROOKIES especially when traveling alone or with non-local friends. Have at least one traveling buddy who can speak the language.
Learning the language takes away a layer of insecurity and can get an immersive travel experience in these countries who you share culture and history with.
It’s sad how Spanish ceased to have official language status in the Philippines. I learned it in HS and by living close to the local barrio latino in our city.
Avoid being too flashy with gadgets and we kept our Tagalog/Cebuano low and discreet in the presence of locals.
The intention is to blend in.
Being able to blend in keeps you out of trouble. Unless you are Filipino with very, very strong Asian/Oriental features, most Filipinos can pass as Hispanic. Personally, I could racially pass and that’s how I survived the Asian Hate Movement that happened around North America following the pandemic.
I am aware that it’s kindda awkward to comment about race but some or maybe most locals in Latin America think that East Asian tourists are rich. AND YES! You will see large busloads of Chinese/Korean tourists even in the jungles of Brazil! So if you’re Filipino who could pass as East Asian (Chinese, Korean etc) but can speak Spanish or Portuguese, the opportunists would think that this Asian dude is born and raise in Colombia it’s gonna be hard to swindle him if that’s even gonna make sense, right? One of my travel buddies is a darker-skinned Filipina with Asian features but she could pass as Indigenous (Indio) Colombian / Brazilian when we were there.
Dress up only if you are going out for a fancy dinner or clubbin in the posh side of town. Dress down in other places.
We felt welcomed not as a foreigner in Latin America. The way of life, the pace and the place is so familiar and foreign at the same time. It’s like traveling to the Philippines in a shorter flight (at least 6-10 hours from the US East Coast), same weather, similar vibe, culture, architecture and religion but filled with Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking people.

Napaka dangerous din dun lalo na sa Sao Paulo. Even the locals are scared to walk out at night. My friend's iPhone got snatched from his hands as soon as he stepped out of his Airbnb. Río de Janeiro is the same but it's at least worth a visit because it's beautiful.
