This summer I got myself 3 guitars for like $100. It was a bright red Squire strat, an Epiphone Les Paul and a Fender precision bass. The bass is from 1998 and it’s become one of my favorite instruments in my collection.
What a great deal!!! 🤯 Congrats on the ‘98 P bass 🎉 I’m sure it’s really well built.
Please tell me how I’m looking to buy one
@@DingleBetty I recommend checking out Sweetwater. They carry a huge selection of Fender and Squier basses, allow you to select the exact one you're getting, and they thoroughly inspect the instruments before they ship to you. They also happen to be my affiliate, if interested in shopping through my links. You can find my Sweetwater link on my website: www.calilil.com/
@@calilil thanks, I’ll check it out
Totally agree, the p bass packs a punch!!!
They sound great through an Ampeg. I love their growl.
Here's another interesting tip off (for me anyway)...I have carpal tunnel - so for YEARS i bought the thinnest jazz nut and neck basses I could find - but the carpal tunnel never really got under control - THEN one day, I played a P bass custom shop with the 1.75" nut - and after a few min - i realized...my CT wasn't flaring up! ...sold everything that was 1.5" and have fallen for the Oval C nut at 1.75". Dr said it's likely due to less 'squeezing' distance with the chunky nut. Winning
Yes! 💯 That’s a real thing!! At NAMM this year, I had a great convo with Devon Smullen (owner/master builder at Devon Bass) about my love for thicker bass necks. He confirmed that they indeed let your hand relax a bit more than thinner ones. Happy you found the bass that feels best for your hands. 😄
I wish I knew about this before I got my first bass. It has so many knobs and I like how simple these are.
Congrats on starting to play bass!!! Glad this video was helpful! If you’re planning to switch to a P bass, I recommend checking out Sweetwater! I happened to be an affiliate partner with them because they’re my fav music store. With their Guitar Gallery feature, they actually allow you to see the exact bass you would get before you order!! All of the way down to weight and serial number. So helpful for comparing and removing the stress of ordering something online. More links in the descriptions of my videos if you’re curious. 😄
Plus it's like they just have a much stronger presence... a jazz can disappear in a mix and that's not needed in a lot of music. A strong, up front bass line is. That's the Precision's game.
@@caiusmadison2996jazzes have a scooped mid sound when both pickups are engaged. Add a little mid range boost and it’s a pretty gnarly sound.
I bought a P bass in 1992 and it has been my go to ever since
Awesome!!! That’s how I see mine! I plan to enjoy it for a lifetime. 😊
I’ve played my Jazz since 1987. (Pictured in my profile). I chose it because of its thick, punchy lows but retains the bright ring, especially with new strings.
I never realized the shape was different enough to be uncomfortable for you.
Thanks to your input & since it’s been 37 years, maybe I’ll check out a P bass instead of just looking at J’s when I go to the music store. 😊
Steve Harris signature pickup🤘🏼
Just got my first P and couldn't agree with you more. It's a beautifully simple instrument.
Congrats!! 🥳
I have been playing a P for a year now, I wish it was my first. Sounds great-will highlight every mistake, every fowl fretting, just unforgiving. Makes you play with precision.
I wish it was my 1st bass, too! However, I recognize that it was probably better that I spent my 1st year learning on a short scale. That said, I agree. The P bass is very “organic” & pure and very much worth its extra heft compared to basses with slimmer necks & bodies.
I totally love the P bass neck!!!!!
My favorite neck profile!!
I love the simplicity of the P Bass and in that simplicity lies the perfection.
I went modding mad for a while on a litany of basses doing pickup/electronics and bridge/tuner swaps and now so much time later I’ve found myself playing only a P bass for the past 6 months.
It’s been the most pure experience in some time and I fell in love with the instrument anew.
Wow!! That’s amazing! What a wonderful full circle discovery. 😄
I own three Precisions. I've been playing them since 1979. A great bass for any style of music.
Wonderful!! Agreed. Timeless and appropriate across nearly every application.
I’ve only played J style basses since I was 13. I am now 66 yes old and bought my first Fender Player passive P- bass today. I love it. It’s going to be my primary bass for at least awhile.
Yay!!! Welcome to the P bass club! 🎉🎉
Never ever thought I would be a Fender guy when I was younger, but turns out my AM P-Bass is probably my fav. Wish I would have tried one sooner. It really can do almost anything. Going into an Ampeg rig 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Yay! Welcome to the P bass party!! You'll have it for a lifetime. And oh yes, Precision Bass + Ampeg = Classic Recipe. 💥⚡️
Why? Because it is literally the best, just like you said!
😊💯
110% agree! Thank you for sharing!
🤘🤘🤘
Im a Rick 4003 and Jazz Bass guy, myself. A P Bass is right there too, though. 🔥
you like the beatles perchance?
Huuuuuuge ricky guy myself. I love P-basses, but nothing's like my Rickenbacker.
The P-Bass is the equivalent of your favorite pair of Levi’s..always works and never out of style🍻
I LOVE THIS COMPARISON. I couldn’t have said it better myself. 💯
I approve this message 👏
Haha thank you!! 💯🙌
I also love my p bass ( with flats ) together with a Hartke HD 75 amp it sounds massive.
Mine is the same color as the one in your video except the deck plate I changed in black.
Greetings babe. 👋🏻
Love a P bass but I gave it up for Leo's other child the stingray. Nothing beats the massive pick for low and awesome mids.
I gotcha!! We all have personal preferences. I love Stingrays, too.
PJ bass elite squad
I always loved the tone of P basses, before I even got to know what a bass guitar was! As I grew up being a metalhead, I noticed that most of my fav songs had a bright, punchy instrument playing on the background, although I couldn't really identify what it was (at the time I barely knew anything related to music). That "energy" eventualy drove me into buying my first bass a couple years ago!
Wonderful! Welcome to the low end. I feel a similar way about P basses in terms of aesthetics. Throughout childhood, I felt like the P bass always represented what a bass should be. Now, full circle as someone who actually is a bassist, I still feel the same way… both in terms of looks AND function/tone. 😊
@@calilil I really wish I had more free time to improve my skills, to the point I'd be able to call myself a bassist. There are just so many things to learn besides the notes themselves. Moreover, playing bass works like a fine therapy to the soul!
You got this!! Any amount of practice is helpful! And no worries- you’re a bassist from the moment you pick up the bass. 😁🤘
P bass is the Stratocaster of bass.
Interesting!! I’ve always likened it to a tele- because of the really rock solid neck construction and everything. But I know what you mean- like the strat, it has such an iconic design that you’d recognize anywhere. 🤩🤩
the action looks way high there,Calilil, cheers :)
Just a bad camera angle- I keep my basses professionally setup with low action. 🤘
This review is so full of love.❤ P-basses are the best.
Thank you! They really are. 💯😄
You have great wisdom for your age. 😊
Thanks so much! Means a lot. I’m always learning more as I go. 😄
I have both a p and jazz bass. Love both
Jesus that action is high
lol just a bad camera angle- no need to worry 😂 I can’t stand high action.
@@calilil haha good. BTW lovely bass you have and from ur other videos ur pretty good. Great playing
That's some extraordinary high action!
Truly just the camera angle! Haha! I actually play with low action and had this bass professionally setup to play with low action. 🤘
I havent seen too many people talking about how awkward jazz body shape is but I'm with you
Haha!! Glad to hear from someone else who agrees. 😄
I have a P-Bass and I confirm everything you say. I'm a pretty short height woman and this bass is very comfortable to me.
I love the way Rickenbacker bass sounds like, but even American P-Basses are more affordable than Rickies.
BTW I never played Jazz Bass before, except some copies, maybe that I don't remember about.
That’s awesome!! Exciting to hear from another P bass fan. Thank you for watching. 😄
personally i like a pj bass setup, i always found that p basses sounded a little thin for me, kinda lacking a little of the low end i like since i usually scoop my mids very heavily
this is why I didn't made a mistake buying a p-bass. It's because of the strong tone that when I slap it it's like a dog growling. Thanks for the information again!
Anytime! Stoked this was a helpful vid. Yeah, although I don’t really slap, I do love the old school thump tones that bassists can get from a P bass!
Just the name itself Precision is always precise…get rid of your P and J and get P/J you get 2 bass in one 😊😊
Haha PJ’s do offer a ton of versatility!! I love mine, but still also own a P bass. 😄
Ha! Cool! I just bought the same PBass in lefty! Love it!
Awesome!! Congrats on the new bass!
Fun fact:
1. The precision bass was one of the first fender basses
2. p basses are the second most used bass in rock and metal music (also in blues too) you can find that in a PaulDelBello video (what is the most used bass in rock)
no matter how much i try, I can’t bring myself to genuinely love a p-bass. I have short fingers so maybe it’s the thick neck, or the body shape/sound. I started on a jazz bass and so far they’re my favorite.
Right on! Ironic because I have small hands and that made me nervous to try a P bass. So, I owned a Jazz bass first. 😂 didn’t bond with it and ended up selling it once I found the P bass!! All about finding what you love. 😄
I personally prefer jazz basses but a good ol p bass is nice and I respect your opinion
Rock on!! Important to play what you love.
The Precision is an amazing bass! 🤘🏾
Sure is!! 🤩
Someone knows their stuff!! 😮
Haha thank you! 😄
Just bought my Fender American Professional ii last month and the sound is great
Congrats!! 🥳🥳 Would love to own an American-made Fender one day. All of mine are MIM (and they’re wonderful)!
to me p bass feels like im holding a block of wood but the jazz just hugs my body perfectly
Yeah, definitely all about choosing the bass that sounds AND feels just right for you. Glad you found that with the Jazz bass. 🙌
Agree 100% 👏👏👏
Thank you! 🙌🤘😄
Agreed. I wants me that Schecter 5-string P....mainly because its one of the few lefties I can find.
Those look really neat!! Yeah I can imagine it’s really tricky to find left handed basses. I hope you’re able to get one of those soon! I know I really want a 5 string Fender P bass. 🤩
Five string PBass coils split so BEA get the bass coil and DG get the treble, with a Jazz pickup in the bridge. Deep blue, black pickguard, black hardware. Undecided on whether I would want a volume knob for each pickup or have a single volume knob and a Telecaster-style switch. Only really out-there mod I'd make is a 24-fret neck. Give me that and I think I'd be set for life. Well that and a Rickenbacker. And an NS Designs Upright Bass. And a Chapman stick. And...
Haha the hunt never really ends 😂🤘 but wow yes, the 5 string PJ you’re describing sounds WONDERFUL. My 2 cents on the knob dilemma would be to make it a volume knob for each pickup. Would provide a bit more versatility. However, selector switches also do wonders in keeping things quick and easy. I love the switch that’s on my Mustang PJ. 😁
i was gonna get a p bass when i started playing bass years ago but a really nice offer for a jazz bass popped up and so thats what i ended up going for. nowadays i feel like a p bass wouldve fit my playing style a little more but oh well, thats just not how things worked out i guess. i dont regret anything though, my jazz bass is perfect
Right on!! 💯 you may even wanna try a PJ one day- it could give you a blend of both since you already really like Jazz basses 😄
P Bass has always been the favorite bass with recording studios.
💯💥
Terran, I started in a USA P-Bass!! I wished I would’ve not sold it..😞
I have 1-Musicman5 Bongo, 1-Musicman 5 Stingray, 1- The old Steinberger 4 with Active EMG Bass, 1-Fender-P Bass ( made in Mexico)And it still sounds great..A Hartke 150 Combo, a 50-Orange Bass, a Hartke 15, a 220-Roland Cube ( sounds so nice!)
Anytime Ya wanna chat 💭 with me about guitars and Amps, I’m open!!
Jazz of course is the better bass. What I like about the p bass is definitely that one of a kind clunky sound it has. Fenders always have that distinct sound where you can really hear the strings clearly. Almost like an acoustic guitar. Even fender amps have that distinct sound and can really accentuate that unique clean tone. P basses sound more recognizable than a jazz bass and that’s probably why the jazz bass is more versatile.
Thank you so much for sharing this perspective- you bring up an interesting point because the Jazz was technically released by Fender as an “improvement” on the P bass design. And yeah, by having more electronics, it can technically do more. As for versatility, I do agree that the P bass tone is more recognizable, yet it somehow “fits” into the various situations it can be in. Definitely a different kind of versatility than how you mentioned that a Jazz bass kind of morphs. Ironically, the one thing that’s hard to do with a Jazz bass is to completely sound like a P bass 😂😂
I kind of prefer PJs. It gives you a lot more tonal variations. And let me just say one thing though. I don't care for jazz basses though. But I do like that single coil pickup at the bridge. Dial the single coil down and you have a pure P bass sound. And a PJ is not a jazz bass. It's a Precision bass mostly with a little extra ummpph.
I went from guitar toning the neck pickup/pickups down to bass and specifically PJ rolling the volume down on the bridge. And the neck up. But if my only choices were a P bass or J bass then defintely a P bass.
ALL FACTS ! SUBBED!
Haha!!! Thank you! 🤘😁
@@calilil A good P destroys a PJ and a J and all over competitors.
Amen
🤘🤘
I bought a MIM P Bass in 2001. It's awesome.
I recently bought a Jazz Bass as a back up bass, the only thing I should change is the neck, it's too slim.
Jazz body with a P Bass neck will play amazing! in my opinion.
Oh yeah, I’ve definitely seen people combine Jazz bass bodies with P bass necks. Seems like a great idea, I just know I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the J body. Too uncomfortable.
My PJ bass is a P bass body with more of a J profile neck and I love it so much!!!
I love the split pick ups but the p neck's too thick especially at the first fret ...
I sold a p mexican ... ideally the j neck profile is perfect for me ... i recently got a squire jaguar short scale and bingo i have again that awesome growl you mentioned ... i really get it now ... the perfect combination is c slim j neck with p j pick ups ahaha...
The bridhe pick up is nasal and cool for certain tones but boy that split pick ups are soo warm n full ... even the squire ones ahaha
Can’t go wrong with a P Bass👍🏻
That’s right! 💯
I love the p bass i almost exclusively played them or got other basses to spund like them but then i started playing spectors and they are now my favorite
Awesome- presented with that choice, I would choose to own both. Couldn’t own something like that without the other. 🤘
@@calilil I agree I really just love the growl and heft of a spector though in my opinion nothing beats them but p basses are my 2nd favorite
I like split coils! But then I got a good look at the Original p bass.
I’ve got an early-‘80s Kramer, essentially a P-Bass copy with a Jazz-style neck. Very nice combination.
Right on- I know that’s a pretty popular combo. My Fender PJ Bass has a P bass body w/ a Jazz neck profile and I love it!!
@@calilil Fender also has the current Jaguar Bass line, as its official PJ offering. Those have got a Jazz-style neck on them. You could just turn off the bridge pickup, pretend it doesn’t exist, and here’s your Precision Bass with a Jazz neck!
The telecaster of basses
It really is. So stable/reliable.
It’s the perfect bass
💯🤘
Honestly I prefer a jazz or a pj, I have a jazz and it is very versatile because it can sound like a P 😼
I totally understand! I use my PJ to mimic a Jazz, haha! 🤘
You said it best

I love my American Pro II P Bass. It growlssssss!
That’s awesome!!! Really wanna try an American Pro II one of these days. Surprisingly, I’ve yet to sit down with one.
@@calilil Howdy and thanks for the reply. Fender really hit a home run with that series of bass guitars. A very versatile bass. Cheers!
I got a used partscaster with a Fender J Bass neck and a P Bass body. $400 and its my go to bass, lol. My other basses are specialized tools, this is the universal. If it broke, I'd replace it with the exact same partscaster.
💯🙌
It’s the Seymour Duncan pickup’s as well
This is Major! This is Real! This is Deep! A Real Fender P-Bass! Holy Cow! Behold The Glory! I Know! And How!
Haha thank you! Yes, the Fender P bass is glorious. Leo Fender got it right the 1st time. 😄
But P Basses loaded with a EMG Pickups are awesome! Active Electronic !
peep the steve harris pickups
That’s right!! My favs 🤩💥
That steve harris pickup
Sure is. 💥💥💥
I’ve noticed that with my jazz bass neck it’s gets on my absolute nerves but soon to be adding a p bass to my collection soon
Right on. So important to find the neck profile that feels best for you!!
I am jus learning bass. My new Aerodyne is being sent back because the fret ends are uncomfortably sharp. I compared that to my friends Fernandez which had lovely smooth fret ends. I have a Guild bass and the frets are good. I am now holding 6 Fender guitars including this new bass. All have sharp undressed fret ends from the factory, which tells me, Fender doesn't do good necks. I have the evidence. I am returning 3 brand new Fender Aerodynes because the necks were never completed.
So sorry to hear!! If you order from Sweetwater, they will inspect it before it ships out the door to ensure it doesn't come to you with any issues like that. You can also pick the specific stock model you want (by serial number & weight) through their Guitar Gallery feature. This could help you get the best Aerodyne of the bunch. If you want to learn more, they happen to be my affiliate & I have a link to them on my site: www.calilil.com/
@@calilil Sweetwater was the supplier. All 3 55 point inspections. I think Sweetwater gets so many bad guitars they have to ship them anyway. It isn't a true QC inspection. Quality is for the manufacture to supply. Fender Japan and Fender Mexico has poor or no QC on the necks. They ship guitars with fret sprout and then go on to explain, it is your problem on their website. They make it out to be a normal problem. My other guitars disagree. Sweetwater does take the incomplete guitars back. They offered to ship more guitars, but I don't wish to do more Fender QC. I am rather turned off with Fender and don't wish to perform promoting Fender, so I am looking at other brands. I am not a brand person. Thank you for offering information. I do appreciate your time and efforts. Keep making beautiful music.
Nah I gotta have my active dean. Similar pickups, plus another one and more knobs.🍻
Right on- gotta play the bass that works best for you. 😄
You should try a p music man style. Amazing
Those look interesting! Would love to try one out.
Let's be honest this is the same generic reasoning you always hear. It's why we all love them.
Exactly why I would shout these sentiments from a mountain top if I could 🤣 gotta share the P bass love! ❤️
@@calilil greatest instrument ever made 👌
For me, I play a lot of funk with slap so P Bass doesn’t really works, I tried it, but I just can’t play it comfortable, and the neck is just so fat, and the fact I can get a very similar tone of a P Bass in a J Bass with turning off tone and only using neck pickup is just so good and versatile, so J Bass for life, and also to say that Active J Bass is just god
I feel ya! All about playing the kind of bass that best fits you & your playing style!
I will say P’s are amazing but don’t have as much bite as a J you can also get a similar sound with a J but it will be thinner
You bring up a great point- it’s much harder for the 2 bass types to mimic one another. That is actually a reason why I LOVE my PJ. It presents the perfect blend of both but in a P bass shaped package. 💯
I love both the P and the jazz, so why not go for a PJ!
Absolutely valid! One of my other main basses is a PJ!
@@calilil I love the precision necks too, another reason why a PJ is killer!
I had a jam with some fellas and I thought to myself, “man I’m really glad I brought my p bass for this”
Dude that high action though… how can you play on that?
LOL no need to worry, just a bad camera angle. I, too, cannot stand high action.
That neck is why I prefer a J bass
I feel- neck profiles are def a personal preference. You may also wanna check out PJ basses. My Fender Deluxe Active has a Jazz neck profile.
I don't know what I would have done if I didn't take the dive like I did to buy my Active Deluxe P bass...its amazing.
I feel!! I LOVE my Fender Deluxe Active Precision. It’s buttercream colored. If interested in seeing it in action, I use it in a bunch of videos on my channel.
@calilil trying to find a replacement dual tone pot for the active section. The bass treble controller to have on hand do you know what they call it???...cant find it
Some folks only ride horses to work too. Different strokes
Did you install the Steve Harris sig pickips yourself?
I had my fav tech do it. I’m not versed in installing bass electronics/wiring. 😅
That p bass is gorgeous
Thank you! Proud to own it. 😄
Look, I am as much into J basses as you are into P basses...but I can definitely relate to the stabby stab. It definitely changed the way I play when seated. 😆
Jazz camp or not, I can concur that a split coil just plain works for pretty much every application. I *will* have to put a Jazz neck on it, however.
Yay I’m not alone!!! I feel like people look at me sideways when I express that opinion. 😂😂 thanks so much for this comment. You have a great perspective. It’s all about playing what you love. 🤘
@@calilil Oh no, I can admit that the stabby horn is a pain. I now hold every bass side on, to a degree, because of that damn horn. It's just how I play when I'm sitting now. It deformed me. 😅
Firehose Straps ftw!
That’s right!! 🔥
super high string action
Could be an illusion from the camera angle. I get my basses professionally set up with low action. High action is physically painful to me. 🤘
@@calilil indeed.. could be that. I thought it was the way you like because probably your playing is hard and strong, w a lot of attack like Flea
I play a humbucker in the bridge with just the volume. Though Im thinking of going to a slit coil humbucker
Definitely worth taking the time to find your fav pickup configuration! I recently acquired my KLŌS Apollo Pro (demo out on my channel), and I’m loving the humbuckers on that bass. So, I can see why you dig yours.
Yeah i really love my emg mm pickup but some of our songs were played with a jbass so i want to get a emg tb to get that similar sound for those songs and i just love the shape of my dean.
Hi. I was wondering did those seymour duncan Steve Harris pickups come with the bass or were they later installed?
Thanks.
These were installed later on. 😄
Love this video
Curios, do you prefer a P bass with PJ pickups or just the Split P pickup?
When it comes to P basses, I prefer them with just the 1 pickup in of themselves. Regarding PJs, I own one because I view it as taking the role of a J bass in my collection since I basically always play my PJ with the pickups at 50/50 😄 (and I don’t feel comfy playing with J bass bodies)
Gonna buy a duff mckagen signature p bass it has two pickups a Seymour Duncan and a p bass pickup it’s marked down but the p bass is messed up in it I was thinking of popping the p bass pickup out of there and putting something else in any suggestions?
Awesome! Personally I would seek a Seymour Duncan that would match the Seymour Duncan STKJ2B that’s in the bridge. You’ll wanna be careful about output and tonal profile. I’m not too familiar with that J pickup, but their website lists the specs for all of their pickups so you may be able to compare and find a P pickup that would complement it.
yea i told them to just wait for fender to send the original part
@@calilil
yes cause i put some pickups in a nother guitar and i just picked something and it didn't really sound like it belonged@@calilil
What model Pbass do you play?
This one is a Polar White Fender Player Series with an upgraded Seymour Duncan Steve Harris pickup. 😄
jaguar and mustang p or pj basses>>>
Love Mustang basses of all kinds. Never tried a Jaguar, actually!
I hate P Basses. You get in a studio with your top notch bespoke made to the tiniest detail custom bass, and the producer or whoever clicks the button and says: "beautiful, outstanding! Can you repeat that on P Bass? Where did you leave it? I'll have somebody hand it to you! Just don't play any better than the last time!"
HAHA😂😂 this is def similar to why Leland Sklar has the “producer switch” built into his signature Warwick
Aaayy are those Steve Harris P-ups I see?
Yep! 🤘
@@calilil How to make a P-bass more aggressive? That's how. With those pickups. Hell yeah 🤘

Ma'am, are those flatwound strings?
Nope!! I use rounds 😄
"Jazz-bass kinda stab me"... I laughed aloud, as I mainly play B.C. Rich basses and guitars...🤣😇
HAHA 😂😂 oh those are among the sharpest! I have no right to complain about a J bass then 🤣
I have never been a Fender fan. I am thinking about grabbing a p bass though.
Awesome- In addition to Fender, I adore G&L!! I’ve been playing their Tribute LB-100 for a while now and I couldn’t recommend it more. You may wanna check one out. 😄
