  • How to choose which Broadway show to see in NYC. Welcome to you absolute beginner's guide to choosing a Broadway Show.
This guide was inspired by the hundreds of tour guests who ask me which Broadway show they should see in NYC.
It came to my attention that while myself and most of my friends are huge theatre "insiders," there is a HUGE audience of people interesting in buying tickets and not knowing where to begin.
Enter this guide! I hope it helps!

I like how you explain what people often assume everyone knows so nobody explains to people who don’t know. I also like your bright and cheery attitude.

Good morning Megan. Thank you so much for this. You are the only person I have seen that talks about this. I have never seen a show like this even though there is the Penobscot Theater Company not far from my house.

The relationship people have with film/theatre critics is really strange to me.
On one hand, sure, critics are not the unquestioned authorities on what everyone will enjoy or appreciate, but I
also see lots of people who automatically disparage anything that gets good reviews as if the show will necessarily be too snooty for a mainstream audience. There also seems to be the weird idea that reviews are based on a group-think conspiracy.
Like you say, a specific review is only the opinion of the specific critic who wrote it. They are literally incapable of giving you anything else. Sure, you might read some caveats in which they try to communicate the type of audience that would be most or least likely to appreciate the show, but even that will be uncontrollably filtered through that specific critic's own knowledge and experiences.
As someone who has spent some time in theatre as both an actor and director/producer, and had many of my performances/shows reviewed by multiple critics I can tell you that the variety in reactions can be jarring at times. Critics I have known, liked, and respected have written VERY different things about shows I was intimately familiar with.
Sometimes you can read a positive review and come to the conclusion a show isn't for you and vice versa.
The most reliable way to decide on the right show is to trust your own instincts and then allow for the possibility that you will be surprised. I took a chance on Kimberly Akimbo this past October expecting a different kind of show than what I got, but ended up liking it a lot!

I do! It's TheMeganDaily, if you can't find it, try searching THEMEG or just "Megan." The search is weird for some reason.
