Disagree hard but I get where you are coming from, but at least there is still Quake Live...and I bet people are still playing Q3A, too. Heck...I hopped on Quake 4 months back and people were still on servers. Not many though. Remember Q4? It is essentially what you are asking for yet nobody played it...which is kind of a shame...it is Quake but with most modern graphics if you disregard QC.
The passives they have make it more fun. Both clutch and sorlag have entirely different strafe and bhop systems. Abilities also mean an extra system to time and take control of by taking over the hourglasses. You are putting the old game on a pedestal but there are plenty of good changes that make duels even more challenging and skillful while also having more skill expression if you take the time to learn the nuances of the different champs. I can agree with not really liking the shield or acid but there is a lot more there to look at still.

Clutch was good at +back and Rapha did not seize good corners to catch them. Plus alot of missed rail opportunities. No "gg" also pretty unsporting.
