  • The New School, a university in New York City, offers distinguished degree, certificate, and continuing education programs in art and design, liberal arts, management and policy, and the performing arts. THE NEW SCHOOL | www.newschool.edu
The documentary film Asylum (Peter Robinson, 1972), a model of cinema verité, commemorates 40 years of its release. The film documents one of the most controversial projects in the history of psychiatry and psychotherapy. At its center is Archway, part of a community founded in London where therapists and patients sought new ways of working and living together.
A panel discussion will reflect on the legacy of the late Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing's legacy in the era of wonder-drugs, and a glimpse into footage from his 1972 U.S. college campus tour. Speakers: Richard Ware Adams, cameraman/editor of Asylum; Roberta Russell, author, with R. D. Laing, of R. D. Laing and Me: Lessons in Love (1992); Daniel Burston, Ph. D., Chair of Psychology Department, Duquesne University (Pittsburgh), author of The Wing of Madness: The Life and Work of R. D. Laing (1996) and The Crucible of Experience: R. D. Laing and the Crisis of Psychotherapy (2000).
Sponsored by the Program Committee of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, Cabinet Magazine, and The New School.
Location: Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, Arnhold Hall.

It's a great shame that the film itself isn't available to watch anywhere, or download for that matter, for cost or for free. I think it is a valuable document of a brave experiment. Laing and his associates really tried to think outside the box and rationalise the irrational. This lecture however is worth watching in itself, thank you for uploading. Much appreciated.

I personally spent two afternoons a week for about a year 1975-76 dwelling with one of the people in the film when he was living in the Archway Community, which took over for Kingsley Hall. I was being supervised as a paraprofessional. I was 18-9 years old at the time. I came back 1977-8.

More about RD Laing & Me: Lessons in Love by Roberta Russell with RD Laing is listed on a website called rdlaing.org.
I, Roberta Russell, met Ronnie Laing in September,1980 at conferences in Zaragosa, Spain and soon after in Rome. At both conferences I was presenting my research-based Report on Effective Psychotherapy. On July 4th 1981 Laing invited me by phone to join him in London from New York City to explore writing a how-to-have-a-therapeutic-relationship book with him.

I really enjoyed your contribution to this film. Thank you. Have you been in touch with Paul Gordon?... he left me a voicemail once.. he sounded tired... but he said I would be alright and I choose to believe him. I hope he is alright. And yourself. Love and best wishes from myself.

World payed (with money) to service problems cannot afford sanity.
Zvi and Daniel were quite interesting to listen to.
Would be nice to hear some broader lecture by Marshall Rosenberg.

i can't find reference to the bernhardt beier refered to by the audience participant at 1:06:00.
i'd be interested in finding out more about this mans use of the term anti-psychiatry in the early 1900's in germany.

For some reason my first reply was deleted. Maybe due to the sources I referred to (though didn't link to). The person mentioned is Dr. Bernhard Beyer. The book he used the term in was 'Die Bestrebungen zur Reform des Irrenwesens'.

I do love the film, I've seen it many times, I do love the stripping back to someone's real truth, I dislike the guru like adoration displayed here. There are also moments in the film when you can tell there was some unseemly banging going on.
