Metal Missionaries The Documentary

  • This film is the first full-length documentary about the extreme Christian Metal scene. you’ll see that although their music may be aggressive and they may not look like Christians, their hearts burst with the Holy Spirit. They don’t need a label or a collar to know who they are; they are missionaries who take their faith not into the deepest reaches of the jungle but into dim, dirty rock clubs and dusty music festivals night after night to wash the crowds clad in black t-shirts and denim in a sonic flood of God’s unfailing love for them.
The genre of Christian heavy metal is no longer characterized by Stryper’s trademark yellow-and-black spandex. Instead, it’s found on the stages of the wildly popular Warped Tour, it’s featured in the pages of secular music magazines like AP and Guitar World, it draws thousands of fans into rural Illinois every year for the Cornerstone Festival, and its bands garner thunderous applause from hard rockers at events like “The Revolver Golden Gods Awards.” And, while the scene has changed from eyeliner and leather to bushy beards and breakdowns, the musical message has remained the same: God’s love for us knows no bounds and the free gift of grace is spoken in every language. That includes the language of distorted Marshall Stacks that invite those who hear to worship Him with shouts of praise and swirling circle pits.
Curiously enough, there might be enough similarities to refute the fact that these two ideas cannot coexist within the same universe. Death, pain, and suffering are all themes that metal musicians embrace, while Christianity was formed on the basis of its original followers being persecuted and killed for following a savior who gave his blood and died for our sins. So which is it? Do Christianity and heavy metal mix together like oil and water? Or is Christianity as metal as it gets?
Metal Missionaries incorporates live concert footage, one on one interviews with band members (secular and non-secular) as well as archive footage and off camera narration. The film transports the viewers back stage behind the scenes on order to get an in-depth look into the hearts and minds of extreme Christian metal musicians from unsigned bands traversing the globe in vans to major label acts riding in luxury buses the messages are the same.

There is no perfect Christian. The glory of it is that we can be better tomorrow than we are today. THATS what being a Christian is about. I swear a lot, make the wrong decisions sometimes (many times), etc and I try to make improvements as best I can…but my faith in the king has never wavered. THAT is what matters!

I'm a saved believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and have been a fan of Sabbath's music hitting on nearly 45 years. They were not the Satanic bogeyman they were often portrayed as and certain tracks, especially 'After Forever' had pro Christian sentiments. However, it is a huge leap to say that they were 'followers of Jesus' back in the day when they were notorious for their rock 'n' roll excesses. The Christian sympathies and making much of wearing crosses was probably down to their upbringing and childhood influences somewhere in the working class milieu of Birmingham where they came from rather than a regenerative work of the Holy Spirit. I hope that they have since come to saving faith and in the case of Tony Iommi with recent experiences he has had with ill health and thankfully pulling through and things he has said giving God the glory, that may well be so. Also, Rudy Sarzo, a Christian for a long time when he was in Ozzy Osbourne's band, said Ozzy was very open to the Gospel. If Ozzy hasn't already put his trust in the Lord Jesus to save him, I hope he does so soon. Much blessing.

I grew up with Stryper's music in the 80's and very early 90's. Most Christian "bands" bored me. Just a couple years ago I found Demon Hunter and Wolves at the Gate. I was blown away at the musicianship. I grew up in church my whole life and loved Metal. Unfortunately most other kids liked Praise and Worship style music and I couldn't stomach it. The groups they listened to just seemed cookie cutter and inauthentic. I was basically alone when music was discussed.

10:13 "black metal has definitely nothing to do with Christianity"
every black metal song ever focussing on the enemy of Christ, biblical motives, apocalypse, devil and demons etc....
Black metal DEFINITELY has EVERYTHING to do with Christianity. It's just the wrong side of the medal.
Hurt souls in a hurt world trying to blame someone, trying to blame the one the people they actually want to blame, put their faith in.
Denying the GOOD, because nothing good has happened to themselves... I've been there, I've been that. I understand now, that everyone thinking evil or satan is the answer, is just hurt and wrong, or a possessed aka crazy person. I am a crazy person, but now I'm a crazy person praying in the right direction and since I do that, everything gets better and easier day by day and God taught me how to be happy again, which I didn't know for over a decade... Could talk about black metal for days ... But white metal? This journey has just begun for me :)

I disagree. They said, Black Metal is against the establishment. And they see Religion as part of the establishment. They told about Christmas. That Christians assimilated Christmas from non-Christian cultures. Just to please this cultures and make them believe. They see even Christian musicians who use the term Black or Unblack Metal in the same tradition. They assimilate the name to reach their goal. This is what they are fighting against. I understand their point of view, but to be honest, I don't care. Everybody has the right to believe in what he wants. Me, as Christian, I feel humbled, thankful and lucky to be part of God's family. It is up to the Holy Ghost to change the mind of humans. The only thing I can do is to live a life that God would want me to live

Instead of asking the pagans themselves - why they wronged him by doing it, he goes for those who have nothing to do with it, convincing himself that the pagans are not the ones ruining everything he likes. The Christmas tree is not a Christian invention. But the Christians incorporated the actually pagan custom into their religious symbolism. ...His Idol is paganism.
"But the Christians incorporated the actually pagan custom into their religious symbolism"
No, the pagans incorporated Christianity into their paganism. Christ doesn't require you to have any trees "or whatever": you can eat bread and drink some wine with your brothers sometimes - in remembrance of him; his time with apostles; the feasts of the old, which were appointed for the Jews to have a communion with God, signifying that you're now invited as well - that's all.
You can't just reply by ignoring the whole point of what's been said.
The first Christians were all Jews following Jewish customs. It was the gentile - a pagan, who couldn't let go of his customs.
It's simple: if it's not in the Bible - it is not Christianity, because it is not from Christ.
Ask those who think otherwise - they will lie to you, that's where they fall.
Most people don't adorn trees for God, they do this for themselves.
So if you have a problem with that - ask yourself: why you do this. Gentile is called to let go of pagan customs.

I saw Stryper over 10 years ago kind of as a fluke, on a whim if you will. Lifelong metalheads. Seen Ozzy, Metallica, Slayer, most of the great bands. So, the church I used to attend would go on big camping trips at what was called THE ISIDE OUT SOUL FESTIVAL, modern hipster Christian rock festival. I went, people were kind of nice, the music sucked." Hey Stryper's playing on that alternate stage over near the ski lift with the haybails!" I was sarcastic and cynical as I went with some of the young kids to see them. They were outstanding. Oz fox and Michael Sweet are guitar hero's like Tipton and Downing. I was floored, and I realized that Stryper could have had it all, could have been the biggest band, but they didnt. Because they wouldn't sell out GOD. They would be uncool for cynical jerks like me to make fun of rather than rule the world. THEY TAUGHT ME SOMETHING. Being a Rock and Roll rebel is being a good person.the enemy is of this world, on the radio, in your tv, in the classroom, and sometimes right inside the church. It is being influenced or afraid of what other people might think of you.

I do love extreme metal but I do reckon there is time to contemplate, to connect to the sublime. To be in a cage where you only listen to your favourite genre of music at the cost of loosing opportunity of communion with brothers and sisters in Christ is a pity really. We are saved to be free.

The ignorance of those who say that Christians did not invent rock/metal is amusing. All *metal* is a derivative of *rock,* which is a derivative of *blues,* which is arguably a derivative of *American, southern, black gospel music.* They may argue that the _angry rock music_ was a rebellion _against_ the gospel music. However, even if one concedes this, it in no way nullifies the fact that it's roots are in 1800s, Christian music. Those who choose to express their Christian beliefs through various expressions of rock and metal are taking the branches back to their roots!

I was angry at God, despaired about the state of society (actually I still am...) and would try to bash everyone talking about Jesus with the atheist propaganda I sucked up on the web... I thought it all made perfect sense and there is no God... Funny how nowadays everything makes perfect sense, BECAUSE THERE IS A GOD! The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!
You have to ask yourself one question: are you angry at God? Or are you angry at the bad state of life, the evil wickedness in this world, the murderers, the liars, the bullies, the frauds, the rich people and politicans, the celebrities etc. etc....? Because in the end, I always wanted the forces of good to win, at some point I was just too stubborn and depressed to even consider admitting that anymore... I hate evilness. I hate violence!!! We all have violent thoughts all the time, it's so easy to succumb to them... But it will only lead to more hatred, despair and violence until you start seeing some sort of wicked beauty in your depression and get addicted to feeling miserable and falling into an endless hole...
I promise you, Yehoshua is the answer! He is the son of the LORD and he is our king and the emperor of peace! What Jesus did on the cross is way more brutal and beautiful, than any cult ritual, than any reasoning for murder and the truth is always more beautiful than the best lie.. Truth sets free, prayer heals and works and angels are more badass than demons! All the evil forces do is twist things, do their little word, number and sex magic and rearrange stuff that GOD created, because they cannot create themselves.
The devil is a fraud and I can't believe at some point in life I thought I belong to the evil forces... That's just what that fraud wants you to think. IT'S A BATTLE FOR YOUR SOUL!
Also I learned, the real satanists don't wear black and corpsepaint and sit on graveyards. That's good people thinking they have to be bad in order to survive.
The real satanists were dresses, act in Hollywood movies and eat the flesh of children and drink their blood, the lifeforce. They were suit and tie and work where the money is or in the VATICAN!!!
Jesuits are not soldiers of Jesus, they're the opposite. Jesuit influence and catholicism has about as much to do with Christianity, as Christina Aguilera has to do with atmospheric black metal.
They are temple whores, cult prostitutes and black priests. Prince Andrew that boylover... They now tell us it was just him, the black sheep in the family, but ALL THE FAMILY IS FUCKING DRINKING BLOOD AND DOING EVEN MORE HORRENDOUS THINGS! All the elite worship a deity, you don't hear too much about in black metal... That shit is #TooDarkForVarg!
May God send forth the messiah once more and one last time. Maranatha! God bless y'all mightily and your loved ones and all animals!

I love this doc.All the Christian metal musicians between them say it all,all that secular People(and some Christians) Need to understand. The truth of how God works through the power of Music when written and performed through People who's hearts have been transformed by Him and who do it with sincerity. As regards Christians playing in the Black Metal style, why not?I personally prefer it to be called "Unblack" but I don't see what the arguments are about. The secular Black metal fans Need the Gospel message SO MUCH.Music is a medium for that. You'll never stop God working in any style of Music you care to Name.He far bigger stronger and higher than we can imagine.I do get irritated though with secular (especially in the Black metal Scene) Folks referring to Christianity as "Religion".It isn't ."Religion" has been warped and perverted thru out history into terrible cruel things that were the work of satan.Christianity is the total true love of Christ that would never condone much of what the so called church has done in the past(the Inquisitions of medieval times, etc etc).People must understand that.Christianity is all meant to be positive, helpful,God's grace going out to ANYone and EVERYone.Only absolute TRUE Religion is what that is,not what man has often done with belief in God..Rock on with These wonderful truths presented in this doc no matter what some may say,I say.

I would have to say, that Christian music can be any type of music, it's the musicians heart and musical purpose, and lyrical content that makes it "christan". I have heard many songs by bad ass non Christian metal bands with lyrics that can sound rooted from a Christian standpoint, but truly had no purposely relationship with Christ or anything from that idea. Pantera with "Message in blood", and Cemetary Gates Ghost with " He is".
I hear a song about Jesus, but that's me.
Personally I do find it pretty strange to hear Christian based songs with Black Metal music. Considering how and by who the sound of Black Metal was created. But I love all metal no matter if it's faith based or not.

I find it pretty ironic that some of the folks in this video speaking negatively towards Christianity in metal, are the very people whos musical careers are contingent on Christianity. Without Christianity, you wouldn't have much source material for your music. Additionally, they are saying these things while proclaiming that they are rebelling and have "free will," whilst having a portrait or statue of Baphomet behind/above them. Is that really that much different from Christianity? From my experiences, these Satanists and/or occultists, are just as enslaved and dogmatic as the very people they choose to attack. Talk about not being self-aware. At least Ben from Goatwhore was on point and articulated well, definitely appreciate his take on the matter.
Before somebody attacks me, for the record, I used to engage in occult practices years ago(still listen to extreme metal though, Secular and Christian) and ultimately, this revelation is what led me out of those esoteric philosophies and back to Christus Rex. And I'm glad it did! The metal scene is full of these dogmatic elitists, just like the kind you find in Protestant megachurches and various other denominations/churches, no offense to anyone who is but just being honest and truthful.
Anyways, if you want some truly terrifying(in a good way) Christian metal, listen to some Reverorum ib Malacht. Their music is like the soundtrack to the eschaton. Definitely recommend.

Ben had a good point as did some others, but most of the rest just don't get it.
to me, it's more of a style, an attitude. and it doesn't have to do with any subject in particular. it's just another layer, doesn't mean you're a hypocrite or a poser, it just means that you have multiple and varying interests and preferences. nothing wrong with that. now, there are a lot of people who don't get it right, at all. but one (or a few) bad apples should not spoil the bunch. but you've got to ask, historically, were the ones claiming to be Christian acting in keeping with their beliefs, or in violation of them? take your possible lack of biblical context out of the equation for just a second and really consider this. if anything, the Black Metal culture is very cultish, as is the skeptic community. which is hypocritical in of itself, as much as the legalists and Pharisees they're mistaking for Christians. that's my take in a nutshell. Also, i personally believe that those in the Christian Metal scene, Christian Punk, Christian Goth etc. are some of the realest Christians out there, they know their stuff.
P.S i love that Ben credited Ryan, DH is a great example. and the last 5 minutes of this are the best.

I think what I've learned from this documentary is something that I've known for quite awhile and often struggle to articulate. People don't have a problem with Jesus or the love of God, regardless of whether or not they believe in this. They have a problem (rightfully so) with religion. I have the same problem. To propose a "Christian metal" movement is to propose an oxymoron that will never resolve or make any kind of sense. The metal movement is in response to the bigoted and borderline fascist Christian traditions that have pervaded much of western society for centuries. For that reason, I agree that the notion of "Christian metal" is palpably absurd.
That said, I do not believe that there is no place for Jesus in this movement. Just don't conflate the person and character of Jesus Christ with Christianity. That is a religion. God gives us reason not religion. God desires a relationship with us and has no use for religion.

Christian heavy metal it's the silliest thing I've ever heard of. Especially since we now know that Christianity was basically created as a way to pacify a certain Jewish sect within the Roman Empire. The Jesus myth was nothing more than a Roman creation. Not much different from Santa Claus, the tooth fairy or the Easter Bunny. It saddens me to watch people being misled by the Millions. All you have to do is read your history. In a May 2010 interview, Sturm was asked how it felt to be in a Christian rock band and play in Las Vegas:
Well, you know what? I don't know what you mean by a "Christian rock band." It's hard to say that because people all have a different definition of what that means. If it means that we're Christians, then yeah, we're Christians, but if a plumber's a Christian, does that make him a "Christian plumber?" I mean we're not playing for Christians. We're just playing honestly and that's going to come out.
