Rest in peace to one of the greatest defensive fighters ever who could stop you just as easily if he needed to. You almost never see a defensive fighter who can change the terms of a fight when a guy can match them in slipperiness. But Whitaker could.
If you watch closely, Hurtado at various times during this fight does an interesting flurry of hammer fist/chopping motion at Whitakers neck area. That frenetic flurry motion would throw Whitaker off a bit. Overtaxing a naturally defensively minded boxer, but not textbook technique that a schooled fighter like Whitaker is a master of countering.
yea at this time of Pernell career fighting somebody like Hurtado is a dangerous fight, Hurtado had Amir Khan like hand speed, and he was fast on his feet and he had a popped to his hand. he throwsbwild fast punches, and he was nearly 10 years younger than pernell, and he had the longer reach on pernell. i remeber in 94, Hurtado destroyed larry nicholson. but hurtado was not schooling Pernell lol.not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
LoL, Hurtado was schooling Whitaker on how to get knocked completely out and fall through the ropes unconscious. Whitaker was well past his prime here and much older than Hartado. Although Hartado was indeed a better fighter than most people had previously believed, with fast powerful punches and good combinations with unorthodox delivery.
I was quite surprised by Hurtado's savagery and dirty tactics. The fight was quite interesting however, and brought back memories of my early sparring matches. Once Whitaker knew he was in power, never let back.
Whitaker was losing this fight and did something he actually was not known for but those 8 or 9 over hand lefts was as brutal as I have ever seen from a 140 pounder
@@TheFKD24 bro, he knocked down whitaker and was busy for most of the fight..if whitaker didnt get that knockout he would of lost..who cares if they were "slaps"..joe calzaghe slapped the shit outta roy jones jr..people called him a slapper..
Crazy end to a pretty good matchup, though SweetPea was ageing at this point. Hurtardo got his chances against champs but was KO'd by Whittaker, and Tszyu i think dropped him several times with body shots before finishing him early rounds KO. He put both Whittaker and Tszyu on the canvas before losing and was very very awkward. Worthy challenger.
Diosbley Hurtado was underrated as a boxer. He beat randall bailey for a light welterweight title. He was knocked down Kostya Tszyu twice before he got knocked out and beat Joel Casamayor is the amateurs.
Hurtado was paid a lot of money to fight Tszyu and was coming off a 10 rounds win and fought Tszyu 2 weeks after that. Not enough time to let the body recuperate and it cost him a lot.
Damn whitaker showed his heart knocking him out like that knowing he was behind on points. give a lot of credit to hurtado tho for handling whitaker b4 he got caught. Sweet Pea #1
around the 17:20-40 mark the commentators fail to notice and acknowledge them vicious right hands Hurtado was bombin on Whitaker he stumbled like twice in a matter of seconds from them right hands. Sweat Pea ma boy but dang they was riding his nuts wit the biased commentary, Hurtado coulda been crispier but he still was the faster and stronger of the two till he got ko'd
those was some good shots by Hurtado, but it was a close competive fight, and remember Pernell had the better compubox stat.not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
Overall Whitaker landed more punches over all rounds, so even though Hurtado had two knockdowns, his fouls offset the gains, and the fight was close. The commentators felt Whitaker was winning overall in their scoring, which was what I saw. But Hurtado ended up getting knocked completely the f-ck out so what is your beef about?
Absolutely. I counted a good 3 or 4 shots that were totally unnecessary- Hurtado was completely done in before that. This is up there with Roy Jones Jr vs Richard Hall, Jesus Chavez vs Leavander Johnson (Johnson would actually end up dying), and Gerry Cooney vs Ken Norton as far as refs stepping in and stopping the fight WAY too late, when one guy was taking vicious power shots one after the other. And I'm glad Hurtado was okay thank God.

He got too confident a few times but he dodged a lot of Hurtado's hard punches throughout the fight even though he was pursuing him. He knew if he landed some hard punches he could take Hurtado out. He didn't want it to go to the score cards.

Mercanti refereed pretty well during the fight and then totally failed when Hurtado was HURTadoed. Three unanswered punches should have done it. Mercanti allowed ten.
Shades of Emile Griffith pounding an unconscious Benny Paret on the ropes while the ref did nothing. It's tough enough to take a pro shot when you can roll with it. When you're out cold and have nowhere to fall, it can be a death sentence. Refs can get caught fight watching and forget where they are. Mercanti was generally a good ref too but this was an atrocity. Thank God Hurtado wasn't too damaged and was able to go on to have a successful career.

Best comment "Its like the referee passed the regular exam and failed the final." That's how fighters get hurt. I hope he didn't ref anymore championship bouts. He wouldn't let em fight inside with one hand free but allowed this knockout? Terrible ref. Pea pulled off a phenomenal k.o.! One of the best fighters and 1 of my all time favs. Nice champ!

That was disgusting, the referee didn't do a shit, In the 11 Pernell hit 9 times while Hurtado was entangled in the ropes, defenseless, 9 times, and the fucking referee did nothing. That was an unnecessary punishment. Sad!
great Fight!!! Pernell hurt Hurtado with those body shots, if you actually pay atenttion to the fight, and Hurtado miss a lot of punches too. Hurtado is awkward lol because he so wild and fast, and comes out of nowhere withi it. but Pernell hurt Hurtado alot after round 7 or 8, the of the fight Hurtado was just fighting on heart, pernell almost knock Hurtado out before round 11, hurtado was almost out in round 8 or 7. by round 11, everytime Hurtado got hit by a body shot his eyes squinced.
The referee allowed Hurtado to be savagely beaten after he was already out on his feet and unable to defend himself. The ref was watching in full view and did not intervene until Hurtado was knocked out of the ring. What incompetence, or was the ref trying to please someone who wanted Hurtado to win? The scorecards had Hurtado ahead at the time of the KO.
You a reff no was sweet pee behind yes. It's boxing so yes punish him he was knocked down 3 times right did you say something about that nope. So punish him.
This fight was towards the end of whitaker career. Whitaker fought De la hoya after this fight. Sweet pea wasn't training correctly and rumor to be use drugs (cocaine) during that time.
Brain-fade by the ref - Hurdado fell into the ropes & it was a punch that put him there - should have been counted as a knockdown before Whitaker threw those 9 of 10 follow-up shots - fortunately Hurtado survived, but he was in a very vulnerable spot.
cheese, hurtado almost pulled off a joe calzaghe against whitaker..throws awkward punches from different angles while being defensively minded..he gave whitaker problems
Yep, and he's had other issues. He's clearly still getting fights because his dad was a notable ref. He's the guy that allowed Yuri Foreman to fight with what appeared to be a torn ACL, and would not let his corner throw in the towel. He sucks.
Referee ain't shit. Should've been fired and never trusted to ref a fight again. That man could've died. Just Trash af. You watched a boxer get hit with 10-11 unanswered punches and STILL didn't stop the fight. Bum.

HalDanGhor but Hurtado made way too many mistakes. You can't get hit with those types of body shots and make a mistake by not covering up. Hurtado reminds me of amir khan. Both have fast hands and both make mistakes.

Nice champ!
Legendary figh!t!!
awesome fight..
+Jacobi braswel Rigo is the most complete fighter in the last 20yrs! add up all his opponents wins in his 16 fights! is like close to 300. and yet hes still considered boring.
That was disgusting, the referee didn't do a shit, In the 11 Pernell hit 9 times while Hurtado was entangled in the ropes, defenseless, 9 times, and the fucking referee did nothing. That was an unnecessary punishment. Sad!
Great fight horrible refereeing, the fighter could have die because the ref didn't stop the match
great Fight!!!
I MISS THAT MAN ( 4EVERSWEETPEA)
R.I.P SWEET PEA !!!!
This referee should have been criminally charged for this. A suspension would not be enough, absolutely disgraceful
Drugs was starting get the best of Whitaker by now. he got the DeLa Hoya fight just in time
Nope you're stupid
The referee allowed Hurtado to be savagely beaten after he was already out on his feet and unable to defend himself. The ref was watching in full view and did not intervene until Hurtado was knocked out of the ring. What incompetence, or was the ref trying to please someone who wanted Hurtado to win? The scorecards had Hurtado ahead at the time of the KO.
You a reff no was sweet pee behind yes. It's boxing so yes punish him he was knocked down 3 times right did you say something about that nope. So punish him.
DLH thought he had an easy one , after watching this performance from P.W
Typical Whitaker finding a way to win against a wily unpredictable opponent. One of the greats of all time.
22:00 awesome defense.
Pernell "SWEET PEA" Whitaker RIP!!!!
This fight was towards the end of whitaker career. Whitaker fought De la hoya after this fight. Sweet pea wasn't training correctly and rumor to be use drugs (cocaine) during that time.
That's cap
He sucks.
Not gonna lie he was really roughing up Whitaker in the beginning
Some say the ref still hasn’t called this fight…
Whitaker fought the wrong fight. He's lucky he got the knock out
best ref in the biz, lets the fighters fight .
u are an idiot
Sweet pea was the truth. Rip
Sweetpea was up against one this nite ; 5'11 undefeated, cuban
Litte did most know then.
Any ideas why the ref didn't stop it? Surley he saw it all as plain as day
Shocking ref!!
Ref is a chump.... sweet pea has heart man 💪
Whittaker getting out boxed the whole fight, but whitaker find a way to win at the end.
Hurtado after break would follow ref just to get them few more seconds away from Pernell!
The referee is cruel and inhumane !!!
Referee ain't shit. Should've been fired and never trusted to ref a fight again. That man could've died. Just Trash af. You watched a boxer get hit with 10-11 unanswered punches and STILL didn't stop the fight. Bum.
sweet pea 5-1 vs Angel Herrera of Cuba
I don't know what Gamboa is doing with his career man! But Gamboa is not Rigondeaux.
Dammmnnn danielll at 42:56 pernell caught him with a malicious right hand it should have been done earlier the fight After the second punch at 42:57 pernell had him out the ref should have stepped in after like the 4th punch or sooner pernell landed like 3 unanswered shots after that it shouldn’t have came too that the ref fucked up he could have died in there
Right chin on Sweet Pea.
Yes pernell whitaker was good at winning by points, knockouts or eviction ,yes people evicting hiz Mother from the home he bought for her after the 1984 Olympics that she lived in for 30 years just because he said he needed the money. Be kind to your Mother, be kind to your Mother, be kind to your Mother and be kind to your Father.
wow
The lucky knocked out ever..hurtado was winning easily
Going into the 11th Whitaker was 95, Hurtado 92. And even if Hurtado was in front, which he wasn't, the fight's not over until it's finished.
nope he got blinded by a right hand by pernell and Hurtado didnt see the left coming.not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
Hurtado had Whitaker down on all the judges scorecards going into the 11th round
HalDanGhor but Hurtado made way too many mistakes. You can't get hit with those types of body shots and make a mistake by not covering up. Hurtado reminds me of amir khan. Both have fast hands and both make mistakes.
That was disgusting, the referee didn't do a shit, he hit 9 times while Hurtado was entangled in the ropes, defenseless, 9 times, and the fucking referee did nothing. That was an unnecessary punishment. Sad!
I hate the way hurtado fights. go Pernell Whitaker!!
Playing ring around the rosie ... that's all he fuckin does.
"Mercante" see he was out?
good fight hurtado is tough ref is very weird not got at all wat started ko was hard body shot the leftjab hooks
How is that left hook that kneed Sweetpea in the 2nd. Not a knockdown? Gimme a break. Rip. Sweetpea
Biased ref, commentators..Hurtado dropped Whitaker multiple times..they wanted the dela choya match no matter what.
