  • Saddleback Leather Grandfather Overnight Case - Review
Apologies if the video seemed rushed! This was the 3rd take of the video, with the other two takes having been so long as to max out my iPhone storage  so I kept this one quick. One more thing to add: this was bought in July of 2024 for $849 + s/h, in case anyone in the future is trying to track price changes.

Hey mate, that is a truly beautiful case. I love it so much. I'm also a big admirer of the Grandfather collection, I own the carry-on and it's beautiful. Same quality and design style as your case, can't wait to see what Dave comes up with next. Thanks for sharing mate

For some reason their suitcases are really weak and flimsy. I've been a SBL fan since Dave was only selling on eBay. I still have one of the first (classic) briefcases from eBay. And I own a few dozen items from SBL, love their leather. From coasters to leather socks to hang on the mantle for xmas...briefcases, luggage, desk accessories, I could go on and on with what I have from SBL.
That being said; I do not like their hard side luggage. I thought their hard side luggage would be the most hardcore pieces of kit one could buy, but that is an incorrect assumption. They're flimsy and weak and it's frustrating.
I have a leather suitcase (just like SBL's grandfather suitcase) from 1960 (my father's) and I can stand on it any which way. I weigh 220lbs at 6'2" and can position the suitcase in any manner and it'll hold my weight. Whether I sit it upright on the floor and stand on top of it or place it on it's side...It holds my weight.
I've owned three different suitcases from SBL and I would get concerned when stacking them or something else upon them. They do not hold up at all to true travel. Which breaks my heart because I've had a longstanding "relationship" with Dave Munson and his father and they are truly good people. I would think an aluminum structure with steel supports and THEN covered by leather, would be awesome. I know it'd be heavy, but who cares. My father's old leather suitcase weighs 18lbs and I use it all of the time. It does have an aluminum framework underneath its leather. I've had people stop me just so they could photograph my suitcase. I love it.
Heck, even my 1960's Samsonite faux leather suitcase group of three holds up better than the Saddleback Leather cases. This guy here is correct in keeping it at home to use only as a box. Because that's all it's good for.
I had the Grandfather 15" briefcase, this Grandfather Overnight case and an older piece of hard side travel luggage from SBL a while back. Got rid of all of them.
