Norfolk & Western 611 & 475: Virginian Thunder in Paradise

  • In the summer of 2021, Norfolk & Western 611 made a grand return to the Strasburg Railroad of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and was reunited with N&W 475, once again bringing together both operational N&W locomotives. On the weekend of July 17, the two Virginians were running together with 611 on the main service and 475 on the extra train. I arrived shortly after lunchtime to see 611 returning and 475 heading out under beautiful blue skies. Soon dark clouds were mounting on the horizon, and shortly after 475 left with its final train of the day a monsoon fell upon the Amish country. For the next hour the storm raged around the Strasburg depot as passengers and railfans sought cover in the various shops along the platform. The storm broke as quickly as it had appeared and 611's final two runs of the day were made under a calm if overcast sunset. Despite the weather it was a good day to see Norfolk & Western steam in action on the Road to Paradise.
Unfortunately, in a tragic repeat of my last visit to see 611 in Strasburg, my Azden microphone decided to stop working right halfway through the day. Luckily the distortion isn't nearly as bad as it was in 2019 but it is still immensely frustrating. I purchased a new Rode mic once home but the remaining filming on this trip had to be done on my ZV-1 and its internal mic.

Really glad that storm came through that afternoon and knocked the temperatures down because the heat that morning and the day before was brutal. It was still worth the trek out there though.
Honestly I really didn't notice that much distortion from the mic in this video at all.

It did feel pretty nice after the storm, although I was wishing I'd had an umbrella. As for the mic distortion, I did what I could to mitigate it in post but its most noticeable in the final shot when the audio cuts completely out for a second as the train passes.

I can't wait to see 611 in two weeks. It looks like you were in the same field where the constable chased me away from when I was there two years ago, the one between the yard and Paradise Lane.

I love this video! Especially the scene at 6:52.

The thunderstorm part reminded me of my 14th driving and firing session with 5 inch gauge steamy Holy War, behind Carrog Station on the Llangollen Railway. Martin, Holy War and I saw a flash of lightning streak across the dark cloudy sky. A loud rumble of thunder followed a second later. I didn't have my coat on in the hope I wouldn't need it, I'd left it at home. Having got steam up, I was determined to give Holy War a run. Martin kindly held a large umbrella over my head, so I wouldn't get wet. I had to break off for lunch, and then Martin's wife Jeanette lent me her blue raincoat. Just goes to prove no thunderstorm ever stands in my way.

I hope 611 will be fitted with PTC in the near future.

Right now it is not feasible to do so, and if they did. Where would they operate it. Norfolk Southern said no to passenger excursions and Amtrak will no provide insurance for the excursions. The days of mainline steam excursions are over on Norfolk Southern at least. Might be hope on CSX in the future with 2716 and maybe 765.

611's bell is rung on compressed air, that's the sound of the clapper resetting after each ring.
