    Excellent narrative. Dracula is a timeless novel. Not to mention all the times it has been adapted into film. That is truly a testament of its endurance.

    Bram Stoker was in debt to his publisher. He had to send the second draft of Dracula or be sued for the money the publisher had advanced him. We can only imagine what the finished gothic novel would have been.

    why are people bitching about the "issues" with this recording? There are about ten unabridged audiobooks on CZcams, including one with a cast full of British stars, several abridged versions, and even another radio adaption---at least one...I urge the dissatisfied to get their money back and investigate them... OH! MY BAD---that's right, CZcams is FREE....
    This is a two-hour condensed drama that does exactly what it is supposed to do: Entertain and divert; it is something wonderfully familiar, yet stylized enough to provide surprises---which one can listen to anywhere, and stop, pause, replay if necessary....The judgments about the quality of acting and production values are absurd...There has never been a "flawless" Dracula-----which includes the Coppola version: "Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula"---oh, I mean "Bram Stoker's Dracula".....

      For me personally the only real Dracula is Bela Lugosi. That made me because I grew up with that Dracula and I love that Dracula. Started to listen to several on the web and this is the only one that kept me interested for a while summer short Summer Long Summer only an hour I want the full book I've read it it's a wonderful book to read it's so much in the book that you can't put in the radio so I suggest reading a book it's really scary and your miss a lot that isn't in the movie or the radio Productions. THIS is an absolutely wonderful production, great effects not overdone. The sounds, the atmosphere and the acting are superb. It absorbs you perfectly and it's all so convincing! Great stuff!

      I changed it since Arthur Holmwood doesn’t have much of a character other than Lucy choosing him, being rich and having an intimate friendship with Quincey. I decided giving those traits to Seward would streamline the narrative.

    The sound is a bit rough at times it sounds like the actor's are in different rooms when they are talking to one and another, most noticeable though headphones. Its really in and out, different mics its a little off putting. I don't know what it is but the sound isn't right some how, was it recorded over zoom or something over lock down?

      @BusterKeatn that's what I thought, saying all of that. I have done some amateur acting myself, but I've always played to a character in front of me. It must have been difficult doing it, making it look like they're in the same place and acting without having somebody actually acting in front of you, forget about different countries. Good job, for sure 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻

    But the question that I have is ;
    Who gets the property in Transylvania ?
    Shouldn't it be turned into a haunted hotel
    then the next generation of Nina and the vampire hunting
    husband of hers, their children get to write a whole nother story about the castle and all of the Lost ghouls that are hanging out in the chambers of Castle Dracula.
    See you in the next haunted story ?

    I have also adapted DRACULA and CARMILLA for audio productions, and especially in the latter I found that ambient sounds--the ticking of a clock, the winds outside a window, birds in the trees, etc.--created a very powerful sense of place which I now find myself missing in any audio program that lacks it. Like this one. It seems inherently less immersive, hence more difficult to enter into the story.
    The sound effects here seem 'tacked on' rather than integrated.
    More, it seems to me this adaptation (like most) focus pretty much exclusively on the plot. In this case, it also tried to hit all the familiar moments rather than allowing itself to be itself.
    More, frankly, I'm unimpressed by the acting. I have trouble believing any of these characters feel very strongly about anything.
    So, a very ordinary workman-like adaptation that recreates the novel's plot while not really delving into much of the meat. For example, Mina turned into a rage-filled avenger of herself and others is a major change from the book, and not in any way an improvement. Likewise I feel a prejudice against making Quincey a hick or any kind of hillbilly.

    • @mariovillarreal8647
      @mariovillarreal8647 Před 9 měsíci

      You criticize it sticking to the plot instead of it letting it be itself then rail about Mina going berserk and Quincey going hillbilly. Obviously, you could never be satisfied.

    • @DavidMacDowellBlue
      @DavidMacDowellBlue Před 9 měsíci

      @@mariovillarreal8647 Honestly, that is a pretty shallow reading of my comment. I wonder, did you in fact read it word for word, or just skim?
      But please allow me to add some nuance, which was a little lacking.
      My concerns were that all this version was doing was focusing on the plot, not on the relationships or the interesting facets of the story. My complaint was not it stuck to the plot, but rather that was pretty much all it did. I don't mind changes in the plot, only when those changes seem to serve no purpose. And that doesn't mean any change is inherently bad or good. I don't like Quincy portrayed as a hillbilly because what dramatic purpose does this serve other than make him fodder for humor?
      I've said my piece.

    • @mariovillarreal8647
      @mariovillarreal8647 Před 9 měsíci

      @@DavidMacDowellBlue yes I read it but you seemed to complain about sticking to plot then complaining it went out of character of two of the personalities. But I don't know. I think each version will have its own unique differences. Remakes are always either well done or disappointing it seems. Sorry if I seem shallow. I don't know the original that well. Thank you for explaining your description; I see now, your points are well taken. Thanks for sharing. Mario

    This production tried but fell short for me. The voices and the sound effects didn't blend somehow. There was no feeling of being "drawn in" for example, on the journey to the castle. It felt so amateur and sorry to say, the acting left something to be desired especially Jonathan Harker! His acting is dreadful. It sounded as if his part was overlaid, as though he wasn't actually there but added later. He had no mood or expression in his voice. I've tried twice to stick this out but it's impossible. It just doesn't grab me at all. It has no terror, fear or suspense.
