- The NSW Labor Government took office promising to create a vast koala sanctuary on the state’s mid-north coast - the Great Koala National Park. Despite the threat of koala extinction in the state, more than a year later the Great Koala National Park is yet to be established.
Officially, the government cites consultation with stakeholders as the reason for the delay.
Last year, NSW Premier Chris Minns' remarkable admission disclosed a further motive for the go-slow: the government is reluctant to create the new national park or end logging and land clearing that is destroying koala habitat until it secures another way to make money from the trees.
In essence, it wants to exploit the forests for carbon credits.
In this video report from the Australia Institute's Walkley Award-Winning Senior Fellow Stephen Long, we talk to people fighting to save the native forests, and peel back the curtains on why the koala habitat on the mid-north coast is still being logged.

Dumbest approach. Net carbon reduction should be managed for the long term at a higher level than individual commerce. No carbon has been stored in a plantation on an old plantation.. the wood produced will return to the atmosphere eventually.

Carbon offsetting is an extension of the virtualisation of financial markets. We see a nice park with intrinsic value for walking dogs or providing habitat - whereas finance see it as a carbon sequestration service. its how they put a virtual value on something intrinsically worthless to financial institutions. Unfortunately people aren't open to the idea that carbon dioxide is the trace gas of life. Nothing grows without it. This koala habitat being destroyed is a direct result of both capitalism and ironically 'green' ideals.

Overseas(mostly)companies produce energy at a loss from "renewable" sources .. They are then paid once for the energy to the grid..and a second time when the certificate(REC) is "closed" and get paid from the public $)...windmills are an even better grift,..same as above with a bonus of "constraint payments" when their energy is not needed..they get a third slice out of the public $ again...

The Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales (NCC) has today released a new report from Frontier Economics which reveals for the first time that hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars have been gifted to the taxpayer owned logging business Forestry Corporation NSW (Forestry Corp) over the past five years.
The report finds the taxpayer-owned logging business received $246.9 million worth of grants since 2019/20 financial year, while the hardwood division (which is responsible for native forest logging) made a loss of $28.2 million over the same period.

Claims that the sustainable removal of timber from just 12% of our public forests is subsidised, with hundreds of millions of our tax dollars lost logging native forests in recent years is a deliberate misinterpretation of the facts and a classic ideologue’s description of Community Service Obligations (CSOs). CSOs are the delivery of services including road construction and maintenance for community purposes, firefighting and prevention for community purposes, recreation and tourism activities, community and government engagement, research and development and management of the parts of State forest not available for timber production (Annual Report 2022-23, Forestry Corporation of NSW, Pg. 26). Each year, the NSW Government funds a percentage of the cost of Forestry Corporation of NSW (FCNSW) providing to compensate for the delivery of services that a similar commercial business would not provide. FCNSW annually receives a meagre $8.50/hectare to manage their 1.8 million hectares of multiple-use native forest and 34,000 hectares of hardwood plantations for the public good. On the other hand, the National Parks & Wildlife Service receives on average $121/hectare to manage their 7.6 million hectares (before the costs were hidden within Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water after 2019).
Of the $15M “loss” referred to, only $2M was associated with timber harvesting of native forests and was due to extended wet weather, inflationary pressures, particularly a spike in fuel prices and investment in compliance assurance. The balance related to the cost of delivering community services across the State. Rather than losing money as claimed, FCNSW paid a dividend of $13.5 million (FY22: $0.4 million) to NSW Treasury for the 2022-23 financial year and their balance sheet shows their cash position remains robust at $128 million (FY22: $101 million).

Iv fell trees my whole life on the Murray River an surrounded rivers we never clear felled the forest only selected trees an didn't go to small as to preserve a 5 to 10 to 15 year turn around depending on the erea an how fast they grew .it worked an the forest is prestine .I'm watching this video an feel very sad an bad for the koalas an the lovely couple trying to save such a threatened species. There should never be clear felling it's just a lazy care free way to harvest. I hope for the couple an there forest they win this battle.

The Australian Labor Party’s (NSW Branch) (NSW ALP) promise was to establish a Great Koala National Park located between Kempsey and Coffs Harbour within their first term of government (not immediately). The scale, scope and size was to be determined through the assessment process and in consultation with industry, the community and Aboriginal communities. "Labor is committed to saving koalas and other threatened species by protecting their habitat. We are going to create a Great Koala National Park. We have allocated $80 million to establish the park including 140,000 hectares of national parks and the assessment of 176,000 hectares of state forest".
Listening to Minns justifying this atrocity makes me feel nauseous.
South west Sydney has been terrible. Huge amounts of thick bushland absolutely decimated without any care just to get squeeze more houses in. Finding more and more koala hit by cars at night due to the lack of housing for them.
66 years of living in Oz. Have done a lot of driving. I've seen plenty of road kill in my driving life. Kanga's, wombats, bird life as well as domestic animals but I have never seen a dead koala on the road...so you tell a remarkable tale. I live on the Mid North Coast and have seen great swathes of natural bushland destroyed mainly by developers and farmers in the last few years. Recently a new development on land near Bluey's Beach has clear felled every tree and has not left a living creature after grading all the topsoil. All the huge trees were wood chipped or saved for lumber. This has left one side of a large hill totally denuded of vegetation. This area was prime koala habitat. Many other local areas have been affected by this style of clearing land including around Nowendoc, Johns River, Forster, Bonny hills and Pacific Palms. We need to change this practice of complete destruction of every living creature and destroying habitat by Developers just chasing the dollar. Many of these developers or new farmers have no real historic connection to these areas which have been protected and cared for by local people to no avail for many years.

The argument for carbon credits makes as much sense as saying Koalas will never be extinct as long as there is a picture of one on our coat of arms .
Did you know that before the fires of 2019/2020 that Koalas were marked down as a pest species on Kangaroo Island. They had 30,000 of them and they were planning to cull them. Then the fires came and did the culling for them. Inside of a week, koala charities sprang up, 'save the Kangaroo Island Koala's' they said. The opp for a fast buck was seen. Then the WWF saw an opportunity going begging and they jumped in on the save the koala campaign...but isn't it funny how you never hear of a 'save the red belly black snake', campaign? Not so cute and cuddly looking.

The logging industry has pester power, in Canberra every day lobbying, taxpayers are subsidising them yet they have run at a loss for several years. It is a redundant and IRREVERSIBLY destructive industry. It must stop NOW. We must pressure our MPs: write, email, make an appointment and ask what your MP is doing about logging of old growth forests. Read a new book called The Forest Wars by David Lindenmayer , it's easy to read, short and gives you all the info you need to argue with - for eg thinned forests are MORE flammable and greater bushfire risks.
Funny how the logging industry up on the Dorrigo plateau has been successfully logging since the early 50s, at least, yet there is still plenty of forest around where they log. Remarkable isn't it? Maybe they log much more sustainably they are given credit for.

If we were to put a price on trees, we could look at the cost of renting the amount of land x by the time it takes to grow them. But when you consider what they provide and the animals that rely on them, if trees are removed, there is no alternative solution to provide what they do. Therefore they should not be able to be priced or sold. It’s selfish, unnatural and evil behaviour to understand the importance of healthy ecosystems but to persist with exploitation regardless.

Funny how even this film manages to provide film of a lot of intact forest. On balance there is much more intact forest than removed forest. Only the sleepy eyed would blow it up in their minds into believing that a lot more has been removed than is truly the case. But then again, recent years have proven how easily hypnotised/catastrophised people really are. Catastrophising is what people with personality disorders like OCD and GAD demonstrate and there sure is a lot of catastrophising these days. I live up this way, and you can't con me. Aside from farmland up on the plateau and down on the lowlands, there is intact forest in every direction that you bleeding well look! And there is no shortage of national parks around here. Why the hell do you think it looks so beautiful up here...there is plenty of forest, north, south, east and west, and it is not disappearing! As for koalas. They wanted to cull them on Kangaroo Island in 2019, then the fires did that job for them. Within a week, koala charities began springing up, 'save the koala', they demanded! After there was talk of culling them! What a joke, you are all being conned. No evidence of starving/dying koalas to be seen in this film just anecdotal 'evidence'. No film produced of stressed koalas! In this day and age of cameras in everyone's back pocket and they can't film it? Pull the other one. "there's no trees", says the old greenie. In the meantime, in the back ground there is forest everywhere...for those 5 koalas to retreat to! "John found a single koala gazing back at the destruction"...then they proceed to show an image of a koala happily up a tree, surrounded by a forest full of trees! They can't even produce an image that matches the narrative.

In NSW, clearfall harvesting only occurs at the end of a rotation in plantations. I find it hypocritical that those, who are seeking to end sustainable native forest harvesting in NSW by falsely suggesting that the hardwood products enjoyed by Australian today can be immediately sourced from a “transition to plantations”, are the very same people now trying to stop plantation harvesting in Pine Creek and Tuckers Knob State Forests. The Great Koala National Park assessment area contains over 16,000 hectares of plantations, which is more than half of the State’s hardwood plantations. ENGO’s and local neighbours like those filmed are calling on the Government to include these plantations in the GKNP, as even koalas can’t tell the difference between a 40-year-old plantation and a native forest. Within the GKNP assessment area, only 12% of the public forests are available for selective harvesting under strict environmental conditions, with the other 88% of the public estate already managed purely for conservation.
1 acre of industrial hemp takes 3 months to grow and has 100's if not 1000's more applications,and the forestry industry is heavily subsidised and runs at a massive loss to taxpayers and our wildlife,shut up.

Forestry have turned our forests into a dangerous overgrown mess, and are largely responsible for why black summer was so bad.
As a volunteer firefighter, I can tell you that it was actually a massive cut to spending on the Forestry and the Fire Service that increased the risk and impact of damage during the black summer fires...and the ones that followed.
1 ranger per national park is not enough monitoring, not to speak about actual maintenance.

Yeah, so you can't claim carbon credits for anything that's already established. You have to have a bare paddock to do a carbon credit planting, with limited species allowed.
The government is paying $2k per ha for the establishment of new timber lots. Right now. We are bush regenerators tapping into this for sake of reforesting degraded paddocks.
Anyway, less about carbon credits and more about ecology.
Every shot of in-tact vegetation in this video is of REGROWTH forest. As the initial dense rainforests of the east cost, and this area in particular near coffs- the southern most extent of The Big Scrub -were cleared, what has regrown is the eucalyptus due to their copious seeding techniques.
So eucalyptus evolved around 50mya in response to Australia drying out as the continent drifts north. This has made natural fires from lightning strikes far more impactful, effectively clearing hundred million year old "Gondwanan era rainforests", and allowing eucalyptus to colonize. These first waves onto the east coast would have produced the results found in old growth forests today. The eucalyptus stands in and around Nightcap and their presence in the surrounding forest.
In the surrounding forest, the eucalyptus are very restricted with only a handful of species being found, along with a few other offshoots from the eucalyptus tree; corymbias, lophostemon and syncarpia. Alongside these eucalyptus like trees are other myrtaceae (evolved ~58mya), slowly speciating into the different genuses we identify today. So alongside these eucalyptus, we have another myrtaceae descendent genus, Syzygium.
Syzygium, comparatively is likely the myrtaceae line that first evolved into rainforest trees, and quickly found a niche within the Gondwanan rainforests. The point here, is that eucalyptus were NOT the ones to evolve by finding niches in synchrony with the rainforest... No, they needed fire, loss of genetic material and the loss of life to penetrate the rainforest, and only from here would the rainforest eucalyptus begin evolving.
So, back to the video.
Notice the density of eucalyptus stems in the wide shots?
Regrowth. Humans come in, cut everything down, and what's come back? Oh the tree that has its genetic history in dry full sun conditions post fire. Maybe the tree that sets 2 million+ seed every year on a juvenile tree. Maybe the tree that has evolved specifically to grow so quickly it can outpace other established vegetation after a fire?
And that's what you see. Larger eucalyptus in the area would have been younger ones that were left, and now aging 250+ years, but they would be few and far between, maybe 30m at the closest.
Notice the bell minors? The high pitched "Bing Bing" sounds? Not good. They're a natural symbiont of eucalyptus dominated forest, where the presence and density of bell minors is indicative of how (un)healthy the forest is, and if the eucalyptus density is in balance or not.
Eucalyptus are firebombs with very little usability for most animals outside of koalas, a handful of birds, and probably like some species of bees and ants.
Sure I'm all for protecting all our animals, plants and forest, but to blindly advocate for unhealthy balances in nature, is to simply be naive.
Not to mention,
You want eucs for koalas? Well, just know that eucalyptus is the most appealing timber for anyone who makes money from cutting down trees... So... Unless you're ready to kill for your koala, know, they are probably ok with killing for their money. 😳
It's one thing to chain yourself to a tree, and another thing entirely to firebomb a few hundred thousands worth of machinery.
Heck, guess it's not much different to having a firebomb in our back yard which will only ever get drier and more explosive as years go by, no matter how much rain falls.

Didn't the mid north coast burn to the ground six, seven years ago? There has to be some intervention with clearing..otherwise it comes to a point were wild fires come through and destroy everything..without mitigation you'll be left with destruction..

I expect that, if you take the time to consider, you'd agree that it is time to upgrade from our existing governance system - one day of heavily-constrained (option A or option B for which Party will be the lawmakers), badly disinformed (voter choice based on election campaigns, which we know are bullshit) "democracy" every 3 or 4 years) - to a genuinely democratic governance system, where strategic and long-term decisions are made by a group of truly representative citizens, who have been selected by lottery, stratified to ensure accurate representation, comprehensively briefed by experts in the field/s, including by those experts selected by the citizen groups, and who have then deliberated to identify and select the best decision/s.
This has been gaining a track record of successes around the world over the last 15 years or so. It is likely to be fastest to implement democracy by using the existing electoral system in order to elect "candidates" who run on a platform of running Citizens' Assemblies.
We would all be able to waste much less of our time trying to mitigate or reverse the constant stream of bad governance decisions, made by Party politicians informed by lobby groups and other special direct and indirect interests, whose only objective is not to lose the next election, rather than any "public good" consideration.
Yeah, well you can't sheet all of this home to Minns, these issues festered under the Berejiklian government and won't be fixed overnight. But we all need to be vigilant and make sure this _is_ an election issue and remains on the agenda until there is a comprehensive fix. The political duopoly in this country thrives on voter apathy.

I remember in primary school in about 1971 being taught about logging, replanting and harvesting from these future plantations. Now, over 50 years later, I can see it was all rubbish. I've seen where forests are clear felled in Victoria and SE NSW and nothing much seems to grow back. Do the loggers even try to replant? It certainly doesn't look like it to me. There should be no need to log old-growth forests any more but there is because replanting was a big scam. The scams keep on coming.
