Marcelo Gallardo (River Plate) - Managers of the Copa Libertadores

  • Marcelo Gallardo is the manager of River Plate. Today, he's the 2nd best coach in the world, and the best in South America. He's won two Copa Libertadores titles for River Plate, the most recent being last year, when River beat their enemies, Boca Juniors, in the ultimate football tournament - the 2018 Copa Libertadores final: the Super Superclasico.
Gallardo is only 43, and European clubs are already looking to poach him.
Like many South American managers, and particularly those in the Copa Libertadores, Gallardo is as much a star, as the players he develops and uses to win tournaments.
This video examines Gallardo's history, tactics, and possible future, in brief.

Hahaha, hi guys, I was the one who made this video. I don't know too much about European football. Basically, I searched for a list of the best managers in the world, and it had Valverde at number 1, but it was last year right after Gallardo won his second Copa Libertadores.
I didn't really know much about Valverde, I just assumed he was good. I basically only watch South American football.
I'll find the list (it's probably changed now).
Thanks for watching though ! I really appreciate your views and comments. My aim is, to help to show South American footballers, clubs and managers, to football fans all over the world.

If there's any other types of videos you would like to see, please let me know and I'll be glad to make them. I was thinking of making a video about some incredible young players from academies in South America - an kid named Bryan Angulo, who plays in the under 20s, is unbelievably skilled. He's small, he's REALLY fast, he's got an amazing instinct for finding the spaces. His skill on the ball is insane. He's like a mixture between Mbappe, Sadio Mane, and Rodrygo.

I have access to a list of which players are being scouted, by which clubs, and he's being scouted right now by Inter Milan and PSG. If the Barca scouts take an interest, I'll include that in the video.
Thank you again guys, for watching !

Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. Club World Rankings listed Valverde as the number one coach in the world at the time I made the video.
It's not me voicing my opinion (I don't watch European football often), I looked up some football manager ranking sites and noticed Gallardo was second, behind Valverde on a number of lists.
      For example this list here:
      www.clubworldranking.com/ranking-coaches
(As of today that list shows Valverde as number one and Gallardo as number three).
So perhaps I should have said "according to some lists", or something like that.
Anyway I hope you can understand why I mentioned that. Again, it's not my opinion on Valverde. I know almost nothing about Valverde (I only watch South American football). It's just what I saw listed on ranking tables.
Thank you again for your comments. If you have any other suggestions about the video, or anything else you'd like to see, please let me know.

I love River but I also respect Boca as a team and I respect their supporters. But to answer your question ? I think River, under Gallardo, are an excellent team and in truth, if the 2019 Copa Libertadores had been a two-legged final, River would have won. Did you see the final ? River vs Flamengo ? River dominated for 80 minutes. They played exactly how they should have, shutting out Gabigol and Bruno Henrique. Only a single mistake gave the goal and the victory to Flamengo.

I love South American and Mexican football and I wish more people watched the Copa Libertadores, so that's kind of why I made these videos. I'll put them all in a proper channel, and add a website and a podcast about the Copa Lib. So many great teams, so many upsets, so different from the big money flashy European style (which I do still Watch of course, but I like the unmitigated passion of Sudamerican football better.
Thanks again man. Where are you from ?
I'm a river fan too, I make most of my videos about River but I don't want to just stop with river plate, I want to tell many of the great stories that emerge every year from the wonderful football contest that is the Copa Libertadores.
I've wanted to make a video about El Muñeco for a long time. He's such a great manager.
Where are you from my friend ? South America ? Argentina perhaps ?
I've met a few guys online who are River fans, one is an awesome dude from Juan from Mexico.
My Spanish isn't that great, meaning many aspects of the Copa are impenetrable for me (some of the older stories, or lesser known stories for instance, things that have happened or cultural things that only a South American would know, I can't find those out, it would be great to have somebody who lives in that area for assistance in that regard)

(Again, for people who want to know more about the scouting process and how I know this stuff, check the first reply).

    • @Golimetry
      @Golimetry  Před 4 lety

      *_Expanded scouting info_*
I know many Barcelona fans are viewing this video. Here is what I've written, about the scouting process and where I get the info.
      ----
      Basically:
As player prices in Europe are increasing faster than club transfer budgets, it is necessary for teams to find younger, less expensive talents from talent pools like South America.
I talk, via a number of methods, to people at clubs and agencies in South America. That's where I get most of the information for my videos.
I routinely record information about which teams are scouting which players (via a database all the European teams use).
Some of these agencies have helped organise the transfers of young South Americans, to Barcelona (eg Araujo from Uruguay's Boston River).
Many Spanish, Italian, French, and English sides are looking at young South American players.
The limit on non-EU players, in La Liga, means Spanish clubs spend lots of time, finding the right players.
It can be very difficult for a new young South American to adapt to first team football, in a squad like Barcelona.
South American players are used to a different culture and style. Playing so far from friends and family, adapting to a more disciplined style of play, the different types and sizes of crowds and stadiums, etc, is a huge challenge.
Eg Gabriel Barbosa (Gabigol), has scored 100s of goals in all competitions at Flamengo, where he is back on loan from Inter Milan, after a patchy season in Europe.
Inter purchased him, initially, because of his incredible performances at Santos.
From what I've seen, Spanish sides seem to, quite reasonably, either keep players who are skilled and able to transition, like Arthur at Barca, or Vinicius and Rodrygo at Real Madrid.
Barcelona is smartly scouting a number of talented South Americans.
I've listed them in the first comment.
Some are academy and youth hot prospects, who are not yet in the top leagues.
Others are being tested in the top leagues in their nations.
Brazilian Club Academies are very well known for developing talent. For example, Santos' Youth Academy is highly regarded, having produced players from Pele and other members of the Santasticos, to Neymar and Rodrygo.
(I tell the story of the Santasticos here: czcams.com/video/KTAT0ODiieo/video.html )
The Barcelona scouts cast a wide net.
I might talk about this in a video, but some players I've listed are being looked at in person, some are undergoing observed training in their home nations, others are still being assessed statistically.
Many of these players are also targets of other big teams in Europe.
The upcoming Copa Libertadores final, between River Plate and Flamengo, will be watched closely by Barcelona scouts and others teams too.
Barca scouts will be watching, in particular, Thuler and Reinier from Flamengo, and, Palacios ( czcams.com/video/zKRbX7U60eM/video.html ) and Montiel ( czcams.com/video/-fmyHf054po/video.html ) from River Plate.

Great video, do you think Gallardo would be suitable for Arsenal?

    • @Golimetry
      @Golimetry  Před 4 lety

@@reisssato902 Hi there, thanks alot for the complement, I am really happy you liked the video, with each video I put in alot of thought and research, partly because I want each new one, to be better than the last. But chiefly, I want people to enjoy them and get a taste of South American football, it's stories and culture and the crazy things that happen there.
      As for Gallardo at Arsenal:
I was just thinking about this today. I saw that Emery had been fired and I wondered, "will they go for Gallardo ? Will he go to England ?"
He would be a very different manager to Emery and to Wenger.
South American managers are used to doing more with less - they rely on scouting, youth academies, under 15s, under 17s, under 20s squads, as their basis for building great new players.
Sometimes they'll sell those players and buy a more experienced one.
But Gallardo would be a great fit for Arsenal. He uses young players often and he trusts them. Youngsters are able to give so much more physically, and they're often more aggressive in terms of the way they approach the game: they want to make a name for themselves and so they want to win.
This isn't always good: even in the Copa Libertadores final, I saw one occasion where a young River player had broken out and was dribbling down the pitch to the Flamengo goal. He had two supporting players and could see them.
But instead of going for the cross, and the likely goal, he took a shot himself and the ball sailed over the bar.
Young players can be selfish, capricious, temperamental, and they need exactly the right type of, what is in Spanish called, an "entrenador", i.e. a trainer, a coach who Is hands on, who can lay the law down, who is severe when his players are making stupid mistakes.
Gallardo may look innocent, which is where his nickname, "El Muñeco" (the doll) comes from. But he is a very intense guy. If you watch some of his games back when he won the Copa as a player with River Plate, his intensity sometimes spills over into outright anger - there are a few famous incidents of Gallardo brawling with Boca Juniors players, in Superclásicos.
I can't see Emery or Wenger getting into fistfights on or off the pitch. I'm not advocating violence, and Gallardo isn't a violent man. But if his team is not performing, they will dread the walk to the dressing room. They will be absolutely frightened, and for good reason.
This is actually a big topic, because the power of players in Europe is much greater than in South America - modern European players know that they can get a manager fired just by threatening to quit themselves - the huge transfer sums mean that clubs will hesitate to remove players, but readily fire managers.
In South America, it's common for clubs to fire and hire multiple managers throughout a season. But the players will still respect whoever is in charge.
I will just finish writing in a second reply - sorry for the massive message ! If you like, just skin or ignore it and I'll put a little summary at the end of the next comment.

Hi mate, thanks for the views and the comment. Gallardo hasn't played for Barcelona, but he would still be a great manager there. He could be a great manager at any club in my view. He played most of his career at River Plate, but did play in Europe for PSG, and Monaco. He later played for an American side, DC United, then returned to River and retired.
He won the Copa Libertadores as a player, now he's won it twice as a manager - nobody has ever done that.
The finals for the Copa Libertadores will be River Plate vs Flamengo (a big and very skilled Brazilian side). If he wins a third Copa Libertadores, it will solidify his place in history as the greatest South American manager of his generation, and perhaps, the greatest Argentine manager of all time. But Flamengo are very good too. They are not to be underestimated.

Hey mate, yes indeed it is me speaking. Please only subscribe, or like, if you feel the content is good. My objective is to help open up the window into the world of South American football, for those who primarily watch English based or Euro based football, to show how exciting it is. That Gabigol had played for Santos (and Flamengo and others) - and Rodrygo too ! That Erik Lamela once played for River Plate. Or that Arthur Melo once played for Grêmio. All these, not so long ago.
That South America is not just a feeder or farm for Europe - it is a wonderful, incredible, legendary football world as well. Inside of which were born the greatest of the game.
Pele ? Most know him, but still magnificent.
      Maradona - also beautiful.
Alberto Spencer - how many know this amazing jugador ?
I wish to aim and try and desire to bring the wonder and joy I've received from the wonderful continent, to those in Europe.
Thank you for watching my videos my friend.
And if you have ideas or suggestions, truly, I will take them on board to make new videos ! A fan had suggested a video about Renato Gaucho and his history, and despite fires (bushfires) ravaging my country recently which have prevented me from football, I will be working on this video from today until I'm done, and whatever you can suggest, I'll only be too happy to work on next.
Ah, y lo siento, hablo Castellano. Pero es malo Tu Ingles es miles de veces mejor que mi Castellano!
Either way, gracias amigo / thank you my friend and, my real objective is honestly not subscribers, but to have people guide me to produce videos that are genuinely entertaining. Because that makes me happy, and I hope, you happy also. Take care :)

(BTW if you're interested my friend, I think of the content and try to match it with visuals in my head for a day. Then I write brief story boards. Then I write a script, read it, rewrite if necessary. Then I record and edit and ensure the sound is levelled properly..this took me ages to learn. I'm.a slow learner ;) check out my Lincoln video ! It's much crappier comparatively.
Then, I record on a mic, edit to remove plosives and other audibly bad noises. Like strong S Sounds etc. This takes approx 5 hours. For me I am heaps hard on myself - very critical of myself !
Then I make the video which takes between 24 and 60 hours straight (I learn as I go - the video about Pele and the Santasticos, or the video about Gonzalo Montiel took a LONG time).
Thanks to Señor Montiel, who gave me footage ! I sent him a Facebook message and he was such a nice guy ! Lovely person !
Then yeah to out it together with music and such takes another day.
If I never had to sleep I would spend maybe 60 to 80h or video.
But I love these and I hope I improve each time..So.i hope I get better with improved videos and improved quality in all areas :)
If you need any more questions please do not hesitate to ask.
And, if you have some ideas no worries ! I'm always keen for ideas. Serio hombre !
I read books, archives and I even work (for not much money) as an official historian got a European football team... But that one sadly, I can't tell. It's not.my favourite team...but they don't know it ;)

In referencing the current managerial greats he mentions Klopp (who can't even win a domestic competion) yet carefully avoids reference to the mighty Pep Guardiola who's the guy who stops Klopp winning jack in the UK.
Ergo; thumbs down from me cobber*

What did you think of the video itself, and its content, beyond the fact that I failed to mention Pep Guardiola ?

    • @hisroyalblueness
      @hisroyalblueness Před 4 lety

@@Golimetry It was very slick, it was well delivered and it seemed to be informative. I was poised to click on 'like' and honestly considering a follow (I'm easily charmed).
Then it side stepped mentioning Guardiola - in a presentation on the current greatest football managers it somehow avoided acknowledging the existance of a current manager who is perhaps the greatest ever football manager of all time and who holds all current english titles . . . and threw a lightweight like Klopp into the mix.
Thus I knew it to be delivered by either a Liverpool supporter trying to alter current reality (they do weird stuff like that. . sadly) or someone with skant knowledge backed up by skant research. Neither of which were palatable.

@@hisroyalblueness This comment put a smile on my face. You must really love your team (Man City correct ?) And Guardiola.
I actually made this video myself. I write the scripts and then record the audio then put the videos together with my goal being, to get more European viewers to watch the spectacular, amazing tournament, the Copa Libertadores (it is the equivalent, essentially to the UEFA Champions league, but in South America).
You can see some of my other videos - some not so good (the early ones).
I don't follow English football so I don't know too much about it, only vaguely.
When I wrote the script, I was looking at a list of the top managers I got from somewhere and I basically just wrote in the script "ahead of such luminaries as Klopp" or whatever I said. I could have said Guardiola, but didn't think about it.
So, I certainly had no intention to dismiss Guardiola or his immense impact and continuing abilities. It was just a spur of the moment glance at a list. Basically to show that, at the time I made the video, Gallardo was 2nd best in the world in several statistical compilations of football managers (I can't remember the source at this moment but I can find it if you'd like to see it).
I'm definitely not a Liverpool supporter, I enjoy watching all football where I can, and I don't like to insult or dismiss any team or manager, by omission.
I hope you'll check out some of my other videos.
Many of the greatest footballers in the world (Jesus from Man City for example) played in the Copa Libertadores. I might do a video about Gabriel Jesus and his time at Palmeiras, a Brazilian side.
I have a video about Palmeiras, but it follows their first title win, which was a bit before Jesus's time.
Basically the intent here is to tell stories about South American football and hopefully, to get people interested in the huge variety of players down there who are emerging stars, the tactics, the stories and the incredible spectacle and intense passion each game involves. (There's a Gremio Player called Everton who is in the Copa this year and he would probably be a good fit for Man City, or any top European team, I've made a video on him if you'd be interested to see more about that player).

@@hisroyalblueness I try to show the contrasts between the Champions League and the Copa Lib at times. Im not saying one is better than the other, but I firmly believe there's an audience for fans outside Latin America, as a compendium, an addendum to the league, and cup games in Europe.
The fundamental difference is, the Copa Libertadores is wildly unpredictable, with tiny teams and tiny budgets often emerging to slay much larger sides. But there's so much more to it than that. The football is different, a bit more scrappy perhaps but there's rarely anyone parking the bus, it's attacking football for the most part.
I just love the stories. Guys like Adrian Emmanuel Martinez from the Paraguayan side, Libertad. He's Argentine born, and he was a construction worker, a garbage collector and did all sorts of other jobs. Then he was injured at work. His brother was shot and nearly killed. The shooters house was burned down, and the cops looked at Martinez, with the motive being revenge for his brothers shooting. Martinez was falsely accused - and spent a year in jail, with no money, eventually proving his innocent (he wasn't anywhere near the fire, had nothing to do with it).
Eventually Libertad signed him for a year trial - for no pay.
So the guy comes out of jail, his arm is injured, hes not being paid. And he becomes the teams top player.
Until Libertad were knocked out, this year, Adrian Emmanuel Martinez was too scorer in the 2019 Copa Libertadores. He still may be the top scorer, depending on how the remaining games go.
The Incredible grit of that guy, the talent he displays on the wing and as a striker, it is truly breathtaking stuff at times.
I did a short video about him which you can see on my channel, actually.

@@hisroyalblueness The Copa Libertadores has so many factors that are amazing and unseen in Europe: playing in the highest stadiums in the world, where players have needed bottled oxygen to continue.
The fans and their intensity - which at times becomes quite violent, on and off the pitch.
The violence is a reflection of that passion. The huge distances between games and the massively variable climates help contribute to the unpredictability, but the best part is of course, the football - new styles emerge. New tactics. New managers. Young players. The new crop of young South Americans who've been signed by Italian and Spanish clubs (Rodrygo, Arthur, Lautaro Martínez, Vinicius Jr, just to name a few) emerged in the Copa Libertadores. It's hard to overstate how important the tournament is to South American footballers.
Neymar refused to go to Europe before he had a chance to win the Copa Libertadores with Santos, even though he'd been offered huge sums.
In South America, there's no title and no glory greater than winning the Copa Libertadores - for fans and for players.
It's gritty and spectacular, and just truly wonderful to behold.

Hey mate, thanks for watching. I made this video. I would probably pin a comment about the Valverde thing, because lots of comments are mentioning it.
When I was making this video, around a year ago (after the 2018 Copa final), there was a list of the best managers in the world released, which had Valverde at the top and Gallardo in second, with Guardiola, Klopp and others close behind.
I don't know too much about European football, as I only really have access to South American leagues. But because it had Gallardo in second, I mentioned it.
I have no knowledge of Valverdes management, but from what I gather from people commenting here, it's not too good ! But nonetheless, at the time there was some list which had Valverde at the top and Gallardo in 2nd.
So what I mean is, it's not my personal view or anything. The list has probably changed now.
Thanks for watching though I appreciate you having a look and taking time to comment. My aim is, to help to show South American footballers, clubs and managers, to football fans all over the world. I hope I'm able to do that with existing and future videos. Cheers
