- Yamaha's Under-rated FM Synth! ALL PRESETS PLAYED.

Also the DX7 sysex have a link at the blog finally. Thanks for everyone on the DX stuff, writing me, commenting, etc. I want you to appreciate the FB-01. I have two CANYON DELAY's on stereo out. I love the somber attitude of FB-01. It has the tone chip of many Arcade Era Classics! But I'm not a chiptune fool. I only want real deep spiritual stuff that the mainstream can't handle. This synth is good as a lead tone with a backing tone module.

Just ordered one of these today. Love what you've done with it. Looking forward to diving in!
I still have two of them I paid 60.00 off ebay and like 90 for the other one that's shipping included now they are more desirable $$$ and rightly so. But the DX7 is a bit more romantic sounding and the FB-01 are more earthy
nice!! I just got one of these boxes today, I need to start making some music with it. Thanks for your music!
That FM sound + Delay = Magic
You're totally selling me on that pedal with these too
That's the most cinematic those bits of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida have ever sounded. Lovely demo!
Thanks bro
Replaced all the caps and the output amp chips in mine, sounds even better :)
output amp chip ?
@@saren6538 There are two op-amps on the output stage. Not sure if it made a huge difference but I upgraded these while I had it apart as a recommended mod to reduce noise, without affecting the overall sound of the unit. Depends if you like it dirty :)
Yup... this was the last push I needed..I'm gonna pick one up.. should pair quite well with my mpc and microkorg... can't wait
Try to get two of em, my later sysex vids are all dual fb-01s
@@johngilbertnxxs2 playing ?
Wow, wonderful, slightly dark and meloncholic sounds. That first sound is a real stunner, take that older brother Yamaha CS80! Oh, yes, the FB-01 is also around $20,000 less expensive too!
thank you .. also you could hypothetically create a tx816
2 patches stacked with four note polyphony?
I guess you basically detune each fb01 slightly for a chorus effect and get a big enough mixer. Not sure on the intricacies of this idea but I can find out if you want that info.
Welllll, CS-80 is expensive for a very good reason, like it is a massive sounding analog polysynth with very lovely filters. Not that FB01 isnt good, they are just very different creatures. And FB01 is very difficult to program without using a patch editor. (those arent too tricky to find)
Absolutely love this! Reminds me a lot of Hiroshi Yoshimura in parts. And all from an FB-01! Brilliant stuff.
Thanks Japan has some of the best musicians in the world. I'm also reviewing the entire sysex for this synth currently in more recent videos uploaded here if you are interested.
View from my window, right?
Very beautiful. Thanks for sharing your work.
I appreciate your time in listening and encouragement thank you
What an amazing overview of all the sounds in this module! Thank you! I now regret selling mine, as I could never get it to sound as good as you have!
Thank you. This synth is a break through synth to a new level. At least it is still cheap maybe you'll reconsider. I sold my DX7-IID awhile back then they got more expensive. I liked it and it got many more views, but programming was too archaic.
@@johngilbertnxxs - I'm sure I'll find another one eventually. Until then, I have a DRS-1000 4-0P FM synth to keep me busy. :-)
@@marsupial3ew Thats cool would like to hear your tracks if you have em up I will check that is a cool synth
@@johngilbertnxxs - I don;t have anything recorded with that synth yet.... you can check out other stuff here:

NICE!!! this video make me buy one...thanks a lot, beautiful playing also...can't stop listening.
thx i have two now :)
i have one now!! bought last week. that went fast. i really wanted one because of this upload from you. thanks again. and its quit odd cause i don't know better that im a 'analog' synth freak and all my life really hated digital synth sounds...so that i want one sinds i saw this video has everything to do with your beautiful playing and sound programming. thanks.
@@erwinpersoon I hope you make some good stuff with it, you may want some external effects. Hint: I have two of the same pedals for stereo effects (you prob already know that )...Your thoughts mean something to me and it's as if we work together on stuff...freedom in emotion and meaningfulness. I also have a Korg 707 it contains the same yamaha chip found in the FB01 but is configurable to a great degree.
@@johngilbertnxxs nice, we synced up somhowe, cause of you i have one now. love the sound, it touches me very quickly, and that for a digital.....still can't belief it.
Absolutely AWESOME sounds, who would think this modest looking little box could do all this? Really good sound design here, just proves 4 OP FM can result in beautiful sounds. I recently picked up the FB-01 for under $100, so my expectations were not high.
I also bought the TX81Z just before this, thinking the TX would be MUCH better. Now I'm thinking the FB is underrated! The TX has more waveforms, so in theory can get similar results to 6 OP FM with only 4 OPs.
I always had heard 6 OP FM was much better than 4 OP, but I've become sceptical as the GS1 and GS2 (1981) were only TWO OP!! But listen to what Toto did with it on "Africa".
they have gone up in price a little bit. im not sure what the bottom line is on the fm synth. the korg 707 has the same chip but doesnt produce great tone. i will have to check out the toto reference. btw try canyon delays for great external fx...fb01 def needs something.
thanks for listening and enjoying it i think it is a learning experience. for example, i am the first known person to solve the fractional tuning feature since it came out. yamaha were great friends of the world back then and went above and beyond the mainstream expectations.
Good work with the fractional tuning. I believe the GS1 (or GS2, not sure) sound on "Africa" is the kind of Marimba sound. Not sure if its used elsewhere in the track, possibly is. The brassy sound is a Yamaha CS80, a beautiful but cantankerous beast!
@@lundsweden that is pretty cool considering that the song is mega mega mega famous. btw figuring that sysex tuning method was so difficult prob about 3 weeks of total frustration, but mind over matter prevails
Although the GS's may have had an algorythm based on 2-op, I think they were 8-op. A modulator for each carrier. 4 carriers and 4 modulators = 8-op. It would be good to do some experimenting in a free VST like dexed. Put up 4 x Dexed instances and limit it to 2-op per dexed. See if we can come up with similar sounds that the GS was capable of ???? Plogue OPS7 already has two engines, so one of the algorythms that has 6-op in a 3 x 2-op config + 1 more engine with just 2-op config.... that would do the same and sound more DX/GS like.
super nice demo of the FB-01 . I got one, cant wait to try it out
thx i have sysex if you need it. FB01 is my fav.
Oh would be great if you can send, i tried yesterday for first time all the presets....there are some nice patches!
email me ill send the attachment jgilbert123 at gmail. btw the syx are way more beasty than the presets also recommend you try stereo effects pedals with em.
Amazing Patches!!!!
Thanks matey! This is a beautiful piece. I love my FB-01 as well.
Thank you very much. I love both of my FB-01's ha ha can't go wrong with quad. This piece was before I had the second one though.
@@johngilbertnxxs Ha ha, two FB-01s, well I guess they are inexpensive and take up just one rack space together. I believe they can be programmed to play as one 16 note poly synth, or you could stack the sounds for 8 OP complexity.
@@lundsweden The fun never ends :)
@@johngilbertnxxs I get it now! It's the Fun Box 01 LOL You know every time I listen to this video I have to go listen to In-a-Gadda-da-Vida again
This demo is so badass.
Thanks Glenn the orig wav is at musiqmist.info very bottom link
@@johngilbertnxxs Thanks! Check your server. I'm getting a 403 Forbidden error....it looks foreboding....
@@glenesis It's like a 1 gig wav file, trying to add the 800mb zip file. Budget hosting, even though the file will d/l on my side. at least wayback machine has my site already.
Oooh scary brass sounds so demonic.
this is amazing
Hi - it might seem a little odd to be considering something like this as I’m not a musician and generally work with noise and drones but as someone who has pushed it past the obvious ‘tunes’ do you think I could get use out of this?
I would say probably not I think I get what you are going for...maybe one of those Indian shruti boxes or an acoustic/analog insertion into your sound palette. This FB-01 may bog you down, since I tend to think of it as an extension of an organ style instrument like a Lowrey organ or something like that, just more modernized. But the spectrum is similar where it really demands chord progressions. I would look more into analog stuff that might still be offered cheap. Look at what I did with the shadow guitar to midi device. czcams.com/video/FuN-q4Ruhnw/video.html
Hello, can you tell me, how i can send a soundbank via sysex to BANK 2? No matter what i do, i only can load sounds into BANK 1. Thank you!
Yeah I think most sysex are Bank 1 only but some have Bank1 and Bank2. If you load another sysex usually the Bank 2 is from the previous one that had both banks. Not many patches had both banks it probably was more difficulty in programming. My site has all the known patches available musiqmist.info
Hi John,
I'm also interested in those sysex datas. could you send them to me ?
Jo
I can attach them in an email. jgilbert123 at gmail
Will also email you
