Awsome crazy content as always guys.. Weld in some sheet metal all the way round the inside diameter so you can't see the bearings then fill the inside with grease 😅 lights underneath so it shines through at night and somthing black flicks in the orange paint so you can see it's not rotating with the tire...
I could see fully sealing with grease and more bigger bearings so they wouldn't catch rocks. But the way they are now yeah country roads you'll know the neighbor from the city just got them lol
@That Guy Alex :) thanks for reminding me of when a bearing went out in my semi and for the 500 ft I was slowing down it was screaming like a red headed stepchild getting whooped.
Hydroneumatic suspension like Citroen coupled with an inverted caliper that pushes out with the same system, and that would be a super lit offroad/onroad setup
Add a ring gear to the inside rim, then have a CV with a pinion running the ring gear, that will give you drive. As for breaks, easy, just a rotor the size of the inner rim and set it up like oversized disc brakes.
To be honest this would look dope AF on a trailer. A light one that you can use those torshin type axles. Using some sort of aluminum tire and bearings with grease and a nice fitted clamped thing with bolts on the outside. The brakes could be done inside using some type of drum.
These hubless/spokeless prototype wheels would probably put them at a serious weight advantage compared to traditional ones since there's a lot less rotational mass involved but the execution can use a makeover. That said it was actually done very well by Garage 54.
Inserting a cowling on the inside of the rim with noise suppression mats would probably help immensely on cutting out some of the grinding noises and giving it a cleaner look with better water resistance, the rollers are resonating inside the open void like a musical instrument.
Great job as always, guys. I would like to suggest that you could try a strip of nylon for the outer bearing races to ride on instead of straight metal to metal contact. That may quiet the noise.
You could fill the inside with an oil bath and seal it with a press insert pipe that is the same diameter as the hole opening. That would quiet it down, lube the bearings and still give you the hollow look.
this is a great idea and is brilliant , all u you need is a brake system and maybe larger diameter bearings never a dull minute guys. kudos to you Vlad and your guys.
I always enjoy seeing what crazy ideas you guys come up with. It would be interesting to see if you can figure something out how to do this for the drive wheels.
You should watch the Jay Leno video of his steam fire engine. It has this central bearing type disc that drives the front rolling wheels. The thing is from early 1900's too
very well done and the bearings if ya use a set of a Lil bigger bearings that are self packed sealed ut probley stop some the noise ..but now what would look good is the centers you all made a while back that free float and don't move when driving ..those would look cool in center not touching rim lol but ya I like them ..great job godblees
You must have read my mind, as I was watching I thought it would look much better with the outside brace gone...Now figure out how to do it to the drive axles!
Wow! Another huge success for Garage 54! As usual, I commend you on your selection of a rather lovely test car. Gorgeous! Taking your new wheel technology to the next level, I suggest INVISBLE wheels and tires. You guys are masters of developing transparent auto components. Why not take the next obvious step make make them invisible?
In the future, this idea will be on every electric vehicle, then, someone will come up with a center hub idea, making it so much simpler, and less expensive to manufacture. People will be in awe.
how about a concentric bearing system, so the bearings rotate around as well, this way they aren't static and will wear better... also try a tapered bearing placing the larger diameter side positioned to carry the most weight ... you could even gear it as well so they have drive, use a couple rear end gears and fashion the gears in a concentric gear drive set up
Maybe some kind of a nylon ring between the bearings and the wheel rim. It would be cool to do a band break of sorts. use the bearing axis as a back stop and a friction material that would push on the rolling surface of the rim.
imagine the noise and damage if a pebble got between rim and a bearing😱 seal the bearing channel to keep debris and dirt out maybe pack the channel with extra grease as well
Teflon bushings pressed onto the bearings. Electromagnets with pads welded to the rim for braking and possible hybrid motor hijinks. Drive wheel with a sprocket welded to one of the bearings. Probably a couple thousand dollars US to pull off.
Bearings are not made for that kind of abuse... The outer ring is very fragile. That is why it needs some sort of housing or in this case a strong steel-ring to protect it.
If you guys want look up hubless wheels for cars there's a company that makes an electric motor inside the wheels and you place them on the front or rear axle of your car given you an electric fourwheel drive if your car only had two wheel drive, the motor inside the wheels are just as powerful as a Tesla motor so you can make your car very fast in acceleration
This definitely could be the future of cars in wheel theory, and I would consider electromagnetic breaking system which could possibly add efficiency to a charging battery in return.
As a mechanic as well, set up drums? The wheel could be the drum and that would prevent heat soak. But you’d need to sleeve the wheel to prevent it becoming a wear item
I think that could blow up the tire if they got hot enough, similar to how mountain bikes with rim brakes will overheat the rim when you ride the brakes down a big hill
The design would be perfect for a drop trailer that lowers to the ground to load motorcycles and other equipment onto it then race back up with airbags. It’s a perfect design.
Would've looked even better if you'd welded something to the inside of the rim to hide the bearings. Just a solid band of black steel so it looks like the wheels are staying there through the power of magic and positive thoughts.
The weight is not evenly placed on these bearings. The bottom bearings are load bearing. Ideally, the bearings should have been part of the outer/rotating assembly to distribute wear.
Ok to make them driven. You'd have to mount them the way you see those electric hubless wheels that have the motor in them. You'd had to have the axles pretty much up against the inside of the ring with a pressure plate or bearing to keep it in contact with the wheel so it would send power to it or use a set of gears. As for non driven like the back id say change the bearings so they make no noise also add a cover over the inside of the ring so dirt etc doesn't get down into the groves
i like your ideas, and may i add that a set of gears are unnecessary, because a traction drive would work just fine. I envision several motors mounted in such a way that they would engage the traction surface. also a braking ring that is mounted onto the wheel, with a caliper mounted inside would work nicely.
also, they could try to seal the back wheels and fill it with engine/transmission oil or grease to reduce the friction between the bearings and wheels. the wheel wouldn't need to be filled all the way, because the rolling wheel would distribute the oil or grease
Awesome stuff guys! It would be nice if the Landlord / Property owner fixed up that alleyway and put proper surfacing and drainage in. Place looks very Third World as it is.
MAYBE next time use those Rubber trolley wheels (that have a ball bearing in the centre) or cart wheels (I have some on a 'Dolley' under my Mrs tumble dryer and chest freezer (as she sits that next to a cupcoard) so she can move it about to access said cupboard, find some small enough though and replace those ball bearings with the rubber trolley wheels. THAT'LL quieten them down. ALSO.. It's ONE way to 'JACK UP' your car (weld the 'Wheel guides' at a more steeper angle! Hahaha Now do the front and you'll have a 'WHOLEY JACKED UP CAR!' hahahaha 😎🇬🇧
What a cool look will it catch on all you need is some sort of brake and there obviously no hand brake your neighbors at the industrial units must think what the next crazy thing Garage 54 will come up with
Only in Russia. This DIY mentality is something very specific to most ex-communist countries, and also Africa. It's just great and you guys made it into a very entertaining show. Keep up the good work and God Bless !
It would be complicated but, all four wheels can be done this way. How to make it move? Make the two rear wheels ELECTRIC. Get rid of the transmission and driveline. Mount a large belt-drive pulley on the inside of each wheel so it's not easily visible. Above and out of sight, each drive wheel gets its own electric motor. Mount two BIG alternators on the Lada engine. They will each charge a 12V battery which will drive the two electric motors for the rear wheels. Each electric motor will either be controlled by a high current rheostat or a golf cart speed controller. How to stop the car? With the hubs gone, Vlad will have to make the brake switch control four relays, to feed four solenoids, which drive scrub brakes against the inside of the wheel rim. That will require bolting a cylindrical liner to hide the bearings and give the solenoid something to push against. It' won't stop very well but, it SHOULD stop! If all goes well, it will run entirely on an electric drive and will look totally clean.
It turned out great. if you want to make these powered you'll probably want a much larger wheel diameter, that will give you more room for mounting whatever you're using to power it. You'll want to use larger roller bearings instead of those little ones you used, and I have one idea for how you might power it, basically running the axle onto 2 more axles inserted into the 'hub' running against the tire rail you have inside. Its difficult to explain. But doing it that way should retain the correct direction of force, otherwise you would have to drive in reverse. Alternatively use a chain drive, a motorcycle chain could easily run against a sprocket mounted on the wheel.
I like when you guys show the stuff you come up with to the other shops!
It's like Tesla walking up to a Khoisan... "partake of my electrowizardry".
This is the coolest thing I've seen on a car tbh. The channel has always produced amazing stuff, but this was a pretty incredible test.
This keeps being an amazing channel, amazing video like always.
And I would love to see a follow up of this with brakes and less noise and so.

I can only imagine how this thing would sound after a few miles of gravel road. "SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
I could see fully sealing with grease and more bigger bearings so they wouldn't catch rocks. But the way they are now yeah country roads you'll know the neighbor from the city just got them lol
Or imagine driving 65-70 mph (110 km/h) on these. After half an hour, just a loud grinding noise, like a broken washing machine bearing. :)

Somebody named you the myth busters of automobiles. Suits perfect.
Put an big sprocket on the rim on the inside and then use a chain. Would solve both the issue with driven wheels and breaks.
Please try it out!

Yes, been waiting for the next post! Awesome.
They just need a sealed center drum (vented at the top) so that you can have the bearings in an oil bath.
Well done sirs 👍 👍 you could incorporate a real torsion bar into that suspension set up, since the wheel mount already wants to act like one

make the whole hub a bearing , dont rely on many small bearings .too many moving parts makes it easier to fail .
This brings another definition to changing wheel bearings
Make the brake disc inside out or inverted.
Make a track where the bearing balls ride in, but hard to make a seal.
: )
Awesome, Vlad🎉
Bravo!!
They make very large opening bearings. That would be perfect and illuminate any bearing noise
This channel should have much more subscribers 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The weight is not evenly placed on these bearings. The bottom bearings are load bearing. Ideally, the bearings should have been part of the outer/rotating assembly to distribute wear.
Cap off inside and grease will stay inside for the bearings, and you could use some type of parking brake assembly type for the rear brake
It has a hub, a very big one. It would be cool to just have a roller set on top that the rim rings ride on and thats all the rim rides on.

modify disk brake calipers to fit over and around the wheel and use the red area as the disc/rotor
