      And in fact Newton-John and Bowie are in the list. The other two criminally are not….when they should be even higher up in there than the aforementioned.

    • @kamsismith
      @kamsismith Před měsícem +3

      I loved that movie too. Sadly, someone thought it would be a good idea to do a docuseries about her death from Yolanda’s perspective which everyone knows that she's a liar.
      As for Jareth, Michael Jackson, Prince and Sting were considered to play Jareth before David Bowie got the role. For Sandy, Marie Osmond and Carrie Fisher were also considered to play Sandy before Olivia Newton-John. Salma Hayek was considered to play Selena before JLo got the role.

      I was thinking of Eminem in "8 Mile" as well-until I remembered that this list was about musicals, which I doubt "8 Mile" or "Ray" quite qualify as. "Selena" is probably closer to one, but again it's a fine line.

    "The Wiz" came out before Michael Jackson's solo music career really took off with "Off the Wall", but he was certainly well known. I saw the movie during its original theatrical run, and even at that age I recognized just how good he was as the Scarecrow. Sadly, the disappointing box office pretty much killed not only any chance at Michael having a movie career, it also turned out to be Diana Ross's last movie as well, even though she'd been nominated for an Oscar (for "Lady Sings the Blues") only five years earlier.

    Um, I hate to break it to you but Olivia Newton-John was a MAJOR POP STAR even before "Grease" came out. In the span of just two calendar years (1974 and 1975), she had FIVE consecutive Top 10 hits, including TWO #1 singles ("I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow") and a #1 pop album (which displaced Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" at #1). Plus, she won THREE Grammy Awards in that time frame. And she hadn't exactly been off the charts before "Grease" came out. She wasn't having the same level of success but she had another 5 Top 40 chart singles prior to "Grease." (In fact, even after "Grease" came out, she'd be a pretty consistent chart performer but she never had more than 4 consecutive Top 10 hits even including her many collaborations.) Yes, her country career was a bit controversial but the fact that she won two major country music awards (the CMA's Female Vocalist of the Year and the ACM's Most Promising Female Vocalist) plus having 13 Top 40 Country hits between 1973 and 1979 wasn't exactly small potatoes.

    Oh. I just remembered that Queen Latifah had a major omission in her listing and that was her TV success on "Living Single." While her character Khadijah ran a magazine that mostly covered hip-hop when music was involved, she and several other cast members performed more classic jazz and R&B (and Latifah performed the show's theme song which featured as much singing as it did rapping).

    With Bowie, I would've really gone with "Absolute Beginners" over "Labyrinth." "Beginners" may not have the same cachet as "Labyrinth" but it was really more of a musical than "Labyrinth" which really came off more as a movie with a few songs while ""Absolute Beginners" was constructed as a proper musical where the songs are integral to the plot. Plus Bowie's performance of "Absolute Beginners" was a major UK #2 hit for him--and just missed making it to the Top 50 on the Hot 100--while "Underground" missed the Top 20 in the UK and didn't even make the Hot 100 in the US. Nothing against Bowie's performance in "Labyrinth" but, given the fact that the film has also made some of the Mojo family's "bad" lists (mostly for the "predatory/quasi-grooming" aspect of the story), maybe using it as a "Best Pop Star Castings" selection for Bowie is a bit questionable.

    predictable No 1, but not a valid one. Streisand may not have deserved inclusion for her A STAR IS BORN, but what about some of her other roles, nb YENTL, which she directed for God's sake.
    Madonna deserves a proper rating for EVITA, the big problem being her age, but there was no reason why she couldn't have done it ten years earlier.
    Mention of DREAMGIRLS should have made you think of the actual Diana Ross and LADY SINGS THE BLUES. Likewise Whitney Houston in THE BODYGUARD and THE PREACHER'S WIFE.
