    i'm from mass.and I remember this shark. it happened a few yrs ago. a bad storm with an unusually high tide opened up this salt pond which let the shark in, then he was trapped there for about week until scientist could manage to get him out.
    it was down at the cape in falmouth, ironically right across the bay from woodshole
    oceanicraphic institute.
    they finally coaxed him out without harm and he's probably gobbling up seals to this day.

    It’s a 14’ female Great White. Her name is Gretel. Local marine biologists say white sharks in the pond is a common occurrence due to their aggressive pursuit of prey. In this case, they tagged and freed her into the Atlantic around two weeks after being discovered in the pond. You’re welcome.

      It makes sense that a Great White which usually cannot sustain in an aquarium environment because of several different criteria. Wouldn't be able to sustain for to long in that salt pond environment as well. But boy oh boy what an exciting site to see. From land of course good to hear they eventuall make their way back out to sea.

    When I was little my family took a vacation to Florida and I saw the ocean for the first time. I was amazed by the huge tide pools on the beach, especially the big deep ones with obscure bottoms. I remember thinking there must be sharks down there, but my dad reassured me that there would never be a shark in a tide pool. Turns out my dad didn’t know everything, after all!

    • @vd6070
      @vd6070 Před 3 lety +60

      I'm glad you had your first experience with the Deep Blue down here in Florida, but Tide Pools are shallow pools of water containing small Marine Animals and Plants like Starfish, Octopus, Seaweed, etc. So it's quite literally impossible for a Shark to be in one unless it's one of the much smaller species. This is a Saltwater Cove/Pond that connects to the ocean.

    • @beekneed
      @beekneed Před 2 lety +66

      Yes, many typical 'tide pools' are quite shallow. However, my friends, family & I spent many years wading and swimming in tide pools at Cape Lookout/Core Banks off North Carolina which were often three or four feet deep (and occassionally deep enough to dive into head first). They were plenty capable of containing sizeable accidental inhabitants including sharks. In fact, we were in a tide pool once in the early 80s when a coast guard helicopter, which happened to be passing over the banks, paused above us and informed us through a loudspeaker that there was a shark in the pool with us!

In 2015 I think, we all got yanked out of the water by the lifeguards cause there was a 15ft great white within 30 yards of the shoreline. Didn’t see it but they are indeed in the bay now.

That part of the state also has a number of ponds. Tides are also fairly high in that part of the world, so it's possible it rode the high tide in and got stuck.

    Most sharks are ectothermic (cold blooded), but the great white shark is considered to be endothermic (warm blooded) because they have the amazing ability to warm their blood by circulating it through blood vessels which lie next to red muscle fibers (used for swimming) and then back out to certain parts of their bodies. This small area of red muscle fibers can generate enough heat that the shark can raise its temperature up to 25 Fahrenheit more that the surrounding water temperature!

Especially if those credentials provide credibility to the observations or statements being made. Frankly I found the OP rather refreshing. Short and to the point. Although anyone who has any real interest in sharks should have been able to identify this shark visually (Or maybe I just watch too many shark documentaries). People are just assuming it's a bull shark because they know that bull sharks have been known to travel into fresh water.

While some sharks tend to share some species segregation by calling themselves white sharks or bull sharks, most sharks in the modern society does not identify themselves by their size or the color of their skin.
      Most shark fight for equality, they would like to share the same space and not be judge by the eyes of society even if on some occasions the bigger sharks feed on the smaller ones.
      Just because of the selfish act of some right wing sharks, doesn't mean that all sharks are bad.
