    So what does "it sort of works" mean when you talked about ECC support on the Crosshair 7? Does ECC RAM just work in "non-ECC mode" or is it actually detected and actively correcting errors? Or is it detecting them and not correcting them?

    Does that IOMMU grouping make it easier to run QEMU/KVM PCI passthrough virtual machines? I was goofing around trying to pass my GPU and enough system resources to the VM to run Win7 as a gaming VM, but I had issues with my PCI lanes being grouped directly to the main chip group and it wouldn't run properly with any real performance or stability :( If I were to build a new PC what should I look for in the hardware to make sure I get the right IOMMU groups? What determines IOMMU grouping?

Also I bought 3000mhz dominator plats and was kicking myself for not getting 3200. Excited about it adjusting timings. Hopefully it will be as fast as 3200. Board looks great! Nice video Wendell. Actually AMD CPU's continue to work really well under Linux in general. And kudos for the RAM suggestion and clarification on both motherboards. That's helpful, that little extra detail.
    Also, putting the machine to sleep, that's always been a "Linux issue". Seeing it comes up quite a bit in most reviews.

    I'm thinking about building a new HTPC based on the 2200G and a board which uses the Realtek ALC1220 audio. Does anyone know if multi-channel analog audio will work properly in Linux Mint? Some boards only have 3 jacks, and will require jack re-tasking to get 5.1 or 7.1, and I've had trouble getting that to work in the past.

    Noticing high video quality in this upload.
    Back on subject @ 6:53 , just check the motherboard's support page on the QVL tab there will be QVL lists for validated memory - if there's an ECC stick on the list, it's not disabled..
    Of course, you still have to come to the forum. This is about engagement. Remember that as you put your motherboard in the case.

    @ Wendell (or anyone who knows) - I have been scouring the interwebs for all that is Ryzen Threadripper (TR) or Ryzen proper on Linux. Does anyone know how a pre-built Ryzen 1950x Threadripper (TR) PC on Linux works for Gaming or just Linux in general. I’m in the market and wish to get the best AMD chip that works with Linux for Gaming, everyday computing, and the occasional video project using Kdenlive. Now, my only real concern is Gaming performance and overall system stability on Ubuntu 18.04 / Mint / Arch....so basically the kernel. My fears and uncertainty stem from some comments from others regarding boot or resume issues and / or system crashes on Linux where Windows 10 works like a charm. So....does anyone have practical experience running TR?
    Thank you in advance for any insight or expertise.

    • @jasonlisonbee
      @jasonlisonbee Před 5 lety

      I'd stop at the R5 2600 unless you want to do professional quality large projects. It's great for gaming and can work while you play. The jump up from their costs more than the difference in performance. Threadripper is useful if you need to do multiple multithreaded tasks simultaneously as fast as possible. Otherwise it's a waste of money, electricity and will put out probably a noticeable amount of heat even while idle. Though not always a bad thing if it's always uncomfortably cool where it will be used.

    Hello Wendell! I think I remember you did a video with the Asus GL702ZC (the ryzen 7 1700 laptop). I asked Asus, but their reply was something like "the cpus in our laptops are soldered" and when I mentioned that it's a desktop CPU that is actually removable from the socket, they never replied back ... so, to get to the point, do you know or have any way to test if the 2000 series ryzen works on it? (Probably not if they don't update the bios for it). Imho this question is worth asking xD

      Max Hughes you need to update your bios already. Once updated, you can actually run it at actual 3000mhz. Just set to D.O.C.P standard, and you are ready to rock. I tried running 2933, and I noticed my processor clocked higher with the rams overclocked speed. Do it, you will not be disappointed. Update bios first though.

      My boards QVL has not been updated to speeds shown on some new boards (like3000 xmp) because the bios doesn't have that update available. Even the STRIX B350 didn't offer 3000 at 2933. The STRIX DOCP 3000 went to 2666C15 with one click.

    I also use p-state overclocking. I do it with my 1800x / Crosshair VI Hero. I'm using it at 4.05 GHz w/ 1.37v max. So, it ranges from 2 GHz to 4.05, sometimes it hits 4.1. Even with all cores at 4.05 / 4.1, the temps stay under 55° (custom water). I had it as high as 4.2 GHz / 1.43v, but I wasn't comfortable with that voltage for everyday use. I hit 1900 with CB15 at the current settings. I think that's pretty good, in my opinion. I wouldn't overclock and Ryzen any other way, personally. P-states are the way to go here.

    Sleep and resume is only a problem on Fedora. I switched to Gentoo a while back and even hibernation works flawlessly where it didn't work right on Fedora. I don't have Ryzen but I had similar issues with Fedora.

      It's a feature for LN2 overclockers to use a thermocouple as Lilian said, since the internal one stops working around -20C or thereabout.

    What open source tiered storage solution do you recommend in Linux?

    • @Zilbyfilms

      lvmcache

    • @abigailpatridge2948
      @abigailpatridge2948 Před 6 lety

      lvmcache only seems to do a single cache stage? AKA, you can't do a slow disk to faster disk to fastest disk like you can with even just this free version of the software AMD has licensed and rebranded. In fairness, that's the most stages that makes any real sense in a desktop scenario. More complicated only makes sense in the enterprise... Still. lvmcache does not appear to have that capability. Or at least its man page only talks about setting up a single stage. It does talk about having cache redundancy, which is good, useful even in a desktop, and a feature that the EnMotus solution does not have in AMD's free edition.

      It looks like there is presently only one tiered storage solution that is open source and works without too much hassle in Linux. It's called btier but I can't seem to find any concrete info on how to use it. Here's a project for you +Level1Linux! Make a guide to btier. The true best way to do cached storage is to use ext4 and put an external journal on an SSD btw. lvmcache has either a performance penalty or a high risk of data loss. ext4 + external journal has neither. For another alternative open source way to do tiered storage there IS zfs. We all know what a pain that is in Linux though.

    I am wondering if there is anyone with more experience with Linux development cycles can give some estimate for timeline on Raven Ridge support. I have a Ryzen 5 2400G, and I've tried running Mint (runs in software rendering mode, not utilizing the Vega cores) and Sparkylinux (frequent crashes). Heckin sad, I don't want to resort to Windows.

    Level1Linux If you have the opportunity, can you test Linux on the Hades Canyon NUC? If it still has graphics driver issues, just let us know and we'll likely patiently await the day when it's fully functional (or functional enough [no segfaults in Unreal Engine like I experienced often in early APUs]).

    I've been waiting for AMD to sort out Ryzen Linux support before moving on from my trusty FX8370. Sound working on an Asus board with Linux, without having to sacrifice my firstborn to the gods, is a definite plus. On the Asus Sabertooth board, I'm using now, that was a really annoying thing to get going. Many thanks for the heads up, time to get ordering.

    I miss 2400G (and 2200G) for better support under Linux. I have a very old PC, I want to "upgrade", surely running Linux. Since I don't care about games too much, an "AMD APU" like solution is more than enough for me, and actually I am not a CPU resource hungry person either when eg a 2400G is too weak (though I would really love "a bit" more beefy Ryzen with integrated GPU, 2400GE was a bit sad news for me, that it's not exactly that I hoped for, to get a renewed 2200G/2400G with at least a bit more CPU performance). However I'm just waiting now to get some sane support for it on Linux. Yeah, I can buy some Ryzen CPU plus a video card, but that's exactly what I don't want, to have a GPU separated, for various reasons.

  • @globalmedicinalmarijuana5757

    Kernel 4.16 and up have fantastic 2400G (with vega graphics) support. Just stop using a distro that isn't using a current stable kernel. Gentoo Linux and derivatives (Calculate Linux and CloverOS come to mind) both work just fine with Ryzen 5 2400G's and Ryzen 3 2200G's, and have good OpenGL/Vulkan performance.
    We currently have a few 2400G's running CloverOS, and now that GCC 8 is out, we couldn't be happier with our systems.
