Old Kays and Harmony's are a favorite of mine. I have a '61 Harmony Master archtop with a steel reinforced neck. After doing a neck reset, I clamped the neck straight under a spot lamp for a while to get as true as possible. I only string it with nylon core acoustic strings to reduce tension. It has maintained its straightness now for some 15yrs. It's a great acoustic jazz guitar

@@FlowforthInstruments oh yeah, after 60+ yrs even hide glue can become brittle from temperature and stress. That's fine, a good neck reset usually corrects stability & alignment issues. It's like an old guy visiting their doctor :P --good weekend

Been a while since I saw a "steel reinforced" label. In my experience Kays vary quite a bit, from nice players to complete junk. I have an archtop that I spent a couple of hours straightening and shimming the unusually long action bolt on neck. Got it playable, but between the action length and anything above the octave sounding like a 2x4, it makes a very lovely wall hanger

Have you given the steam and clamp neck reset method a try? It’s worked perfectly on some old nippon gakki yamaha fg’s for me, some Chinese improrts, and an aria classical. John miner method worked for me and gave a box or two new life.

My first guitar was a steel string sunburst Kay acoustic I got from a mail order catalog in 1961....I wish I'd kept it but I gifted it to a nephew long ago.

This brand seems to inspire a lot of nostalgia...

They were the Sears and Roebuck mail-order brand back in my youth. I think they were coming out of Chicago at the time.@@FlowforthInstruments
