I’ve made these before out of frustration, but because I hadn’t planned them, they didn’t come out nearly as nice (and as useful!) as yours, Jan. This was fascinating, and I enjoyed it enormously! (I’ll bet Lindley Hunauni is clapping at it, too. ☺️)
The most interesting fact I found watching some of your videos just now is how you pronounce your name. All these years, you’ve been “Yahn” in my head. What a surprise to find out that you’re “Jan”! (I’m from a Slavic family, hence my assumption of “Yahn.”)

You know this is Donna Kato’s starry night cane from years and years ago, right?
Actually, it’s not, how I came to the stripy blocks was I was taking a class from Bonnie Bishoff, and I had to make some premade striped canes for her class with no instructions ahead of time, so in an effort to imitate the types of striped canes that she uses in her pieces not that I had not made a starry night cane years before I purposely made a full color wheel not using scrap like donnas canes are or cane ends chopped up into random colors. I purposely was making individual canes from primary and secondary‘s, working my way around a color wheel to have enough canes for my class. Which by the way in hindsight, we’re nothing like what Bonnie makes. After I was all done, I took them to her class and used them in her class projects , I then made a tutorial out of what I had done to get them because I also use them with my Create Template, for which another friend of mine, Franco Owens. Who originally demoed the the choppy scrap process at a retreat also similar to what I do, but unlike Donna’s mine are that not pressed into a wedge, and then into a spiral to make it a starry night cane . That’s actually where the beginning of my idea for my stripy cane blocks came from, I highly doubt Donna would ever claim to own the idea of chopping up scrap clay. Or pressing it into a block, BUT but pressing it into a wedge and then turning it into a spiral. Yes that’s 100% Donna. it was much later that someone pointed out to me that they were just like Donna’s and you’re right they begin as chopped up clay although I never use a food processor, I like my pieces,big and chunky not tiny little round balls, like a food processor makes. and had i felt i had copied Donna I would’ve immediately taken this tutorial down but I came about it to a different way in without any consideration that I had seen it before years and years before when I made one starry night, cane from her book. Typically, I protect what I have learned from other artist in their workshops. And I always have. And Donna, I’m sure has had many opportunities to contact me about this we have had classes and conversations about other things and I’ll see her in October. Oh, why would anyone want to copy somebody. Things do happen where people come to the same conclusion at different times, and trials, and testing, without ever knowing that someone else did the same thing. If you like, I can show you the picture of the one little pendant that I made with the tiny little starry night cane 1,000,000 years ago. But what I’ve learned once you put something out there in the public for free it’s out there. And I would be the last person to ever copy someone on purpose. Why would somebody do that? We already have thousands of TikTokers all making the same marble earrings like they invented it, anyway that’s how this came about. And I’ll be sure to ask Donna in the next time I see her , but I feel confident that she is secure enough in her own artistry, and is gracious enough to address the question of was this a copy of her work or not privately if she has an issue with it.
@@janmontarsi.-blendangles7960 you are correct, Donna is classy! She makes more than ‘spirals’ with the canes. Of course she wouldn’t claim to have invented chopping up scrap clay 😂😂😂. I do enjoy your videos and think your create template is genius. I did’t realize this was going to be a sore spot for you 🤷🏻♀️. Be careful when you name drop, though, you never know who’s really behind a screen name and who they also know. I am use to legit people (not TikTokers) giving credit to all the greats before them and explaining in their videos how they came to the process. The above would have been a great history/backstory on how you came up with this idea. Everybody learns from different people and kinda morphs things into their own style.
That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll put this short exclamation up in the description. Although I’ve only ever heard this comment once before. And I’ve been luckily enough to meet and take classes with all the forementioned, and more likely than not will again in the future. And it’s really not a sore spot if it sounded that way, I was just trying to get the whole explanation out in one spot so I have it for future reference and I always give credit where credit is due, and in other social media place I always refer to it as my stripey block cane or Donnas is starry night, when directing people, and ask questions about how to ‘s
