    Old time Music producer here, what you did with sfx and voice is not wrong! Another way is to keep the voice in mono or center in the mix, double the audio and pan it far out on the sides, that will also help give a presence to the voice

      You mean double the voice track?

    • @johnnyweissmuller5838
      @johnnyweissmuller5838 Před 7 měsíci +4

      @@rorycowieson5924 No, voice is usually heard as mono if you use a voiceover. A technique to get more space in the mix is usually to balance frequencies, that is when you cut out frequencies with an eq like a puzzle to get presence for each track. Another way is to use the stereo space which he did here. That means that you place the voiceover dead in center as mono. And place/pan the sound effects out on the side spectrum. You can also use both techniques to get an even better audio mix.

    • @johnnyweissmuller5838
      @johnnyweissmuller5838 Před 7 měsíci

      @@rorycowieson5924 In house/dance music, the most tricky thing is to mix the bass and the kickdrum because they occupy the same frequency and is in mono. Easiest is the hi-hats, usually they are layered by panning one to left and the other to the right channel

    • @johnnyweissmuller5838
      @johnnyweissmuller5838 Před 7 měsíci +7

      @@rorycowieson5924 Sorry to spam all these answers but, you can double the voice track. This is done in some instances for surround sound voice overs. It would be interesting to try on more low level stuff actually! What I would do is actually 3 tracks. 1 track is tha bass of the voice, so eq low pass all low frequencies. The 2 top tracks should then use high pass eq, and pan them out to R and L channels. That would give a God like precense voice over like morgan freeman!

    Audio Engineer here! Mixing is subjective. Does it sound good? if so then it's right. It's less about the technical side and more about creating a balance and space for everything to sit well in the audio spectrum. That being said it's also important to learn the fundamentals so that you can break them and be creative. At least thats what i've learned over the 10 years of doing this.

    • @Leprutz
      @Leprutz Před 4 měsíci +1

      Not a sound engineer, but I did my fair share of sound design and mixing back in the day. Like you said, it is subjective so I do it the way I like it and hear it, but I also learned some basic rules. Sound effects should usually come with a sense of space and direction as well as the voices, like voices off screen. It makes the sound more natural and immersive into the film. But besides of that, it is exactly how you said. It is about balance. And this is why I don't like most audios nowadays, when I watch tv or even yt, music seems to be always louder then voice and I just do not like it. I have problems understanding what is being said.

  • @segwaymusic
    @segwaymusic Před 7 měsíci +7

    Mark, here is how you can get the voiceover to cut through in the mix: first, I would consider doing this in Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, Nuendo, or something like that but if you can do this in Premiere, great! You need to set up a bus where you will be setting the output of your voiceover. Insert a compressor that can do sidechaining (in Logic, the native Compressor does it) on the sound effect channel (punching bag in this case). If you use the Compressor plug-in in Logic, you will see at the top left a pop-up window where it says "Side Chain:" assign it to the voiceover's bus. Adjust your compressor's threshold so that the average is between -3 and -5 db of reduction (in the VU meter). Now when there is voiceover, the sound effect will essentially duck under it so that the voiceover will always be dominant, but when the sound effect is on its own, it will be up where it should be in the mix! The other thing to do is to do EQ on both channels; much of the frequencies the voiceover will use are in the mid-range so in this case, cut the mid-range on the punching bag, boost a bit the low frequencies (below 250hz but I would roll off at 50hz) and then maybe boost at 5khz to get a bit more presence. This technique is used also for music mixing where you want your kick drum to always be heard over the bass guitar... There are a lot of videos on this technique on CZcams which explain this better than I can!

    I think you're right on with the audio panning.... I think sound mixers would traditionally do it on the track level, rather than on the clip level, but that is the basics of surround sound. That's basically the whole point dolby atmos is the panning of sounds.

    Sound people here. If it sounds good, it sounds good. Anyone who will judge you on technique even tho its sounding great, is wrong. :)
    But there are things you can do to make it even more crisp like sidechaining with a compresor or frequency specific sidechaining an EQ to turn down bands that are similar to the voice over. That way the SFX sounds fat and you don't get the "ducking' effect you sometimes get with sidechaining the volume.

    $10 000 client: "Got the vid. Thanks! Payment made 👍"
    "Why so dark" I find in my work often I accidentally edit for my display but then on phones or cheap TV's it looks too dark... But so far, all MB videos and films look great on all my devices, so 💁‍♂ looked good to me.
