All for One is a character we know very little about, but what was he like when he was growing up? All for One’s Childhood is a big mystery in the series but we have gotten a few teases at what exactly it was like thanks to Yoichi’s descriptions and All for One’s personal thoughts, that clue us in on whether All for One was born twisted, or something happened. Growing up, All for One and Yoichi were raised in a period where quirks were still pretty new, and society was extremely unstable, however to give their family hope, All for One’s parents give him and his brother a comic book about heroes and demons, where the main character overcomes all the odds to defeat the Demon Lord, however despite reading the same book both brothers liked very different parts, with Yoichi loving the heroes story, and All for One instantly identifying with the Demon Lord, realizing that with his quirk he COULD make a reality where the Demon Lord actually wins, but could All for One’s lack of a heart and inability to feel sorry for others come from something his parents did, or is this just the way that he is?

I would prefer for him to be just power-hungry and manipulative. Not every villain needs a tragic backstory, some people are just evil.
The last thing we need is the heroes questioning whether they should save AFO too. It's much more impactful imo that he was able to bring so many villains on his side, but that one by one they leave him and get redeemed while he is the only one who can't be saved

Mha is purely based on how quirk works and quirk singularity is a main plot. And "individuality " is literally their super powers. We still don't know a lot bout quirks. So untill and unless there is a reason. I can buy a tragic backstory.

It's clear it's just the way he was born as he admires the evil villain for their behavior more so than the hero for how they choose to function in their world. While he could've had someone help him to realize that evil shouldn't be his priority so that he may have more compassion, no one did, I assume, so he never got to change during his most malleable years as a human being.

@the lumberjack King also shigarki quirk is basic destruction and that's all he wants to do. Danger sense quirk made him so scared he hid his whole life and died from old age. Endeavor basically burned his family. Toga quirk made her obsess over people want to drunk their blood, there is a pattern

Something might have pushed AFO into despotism, but I think he probably always had ambitions of evil that quirks or meta-abilities just made it possible for AFO to actually realize those ambitions.
Dude imagine being born with the power to give and take away powers from people.
It would be so hard not to truly believe that you were transcendent from normal humans and were chosen to rule over all.
It's possible that like other villain characters he lacks the ability to feel pain thus he can emphasize with normal people.
But it they go with something like that it would be a disservice to the character.

I mean, it was said that people's quirks affect their personality. It's why toga started to gain a desire for blood, because her quirk is vampiristic in nature. AFO's power is literally to take everything, while Yoichi's is to give everything, and it shows in their personalities.

I'm pretty sure everyone here could take a guess at what motivates AFO to become a villain. It was already confirmed that AFO has a fascination for demon lords character as opposed to his younger brother Yoichi who had fascination and love for heroes.
That aside we need to remember that in AFO and Yoichi era, quirk were still new and there were disorder. I'm pretty sure quirk users weren't treated like in the current era where they're put on a pedestal and this was shown in Izuku dream.
1) AFO had a quirk while Yoichi was assumed to be quirkless. I'm pretty sure AFO wasn't received well by others because of it.
2) AFO has clued us that he believe in natural order or balance. This was shown when he had wanted to use his quirk to take away quirks and give it to those who want it as was shown in Izuku dream.
3) AFO probably believed that with an ability like his which takes quirks and gives it to others or keeps it to himself that he could bring order to a lawless nation.
AFO striked me as Madara type of villain who believe in his form of justice. Since AFO is technically 'immortal' given that he lived as long as he did, he may believe that only he is worthy to rule Japan if not the entire world unlike the hero character who is tied by a mortal lifespan and a moral code.

With this I kinda want to see a story where the villain does evil things because they see in stories how the villains bring people together to defeat them and wants to do the same so they become the villain to bring inspire others to do good

You know how quirks can sometimes mess with your personality? I know the guy loves to steal quirks, but what if it was deeper than that? What if he feels an infinite void in his heart so deep he could never hope to fill it, and stealing quirks just happens to be that one thing that nullifies that feeling, even if just for a fleeting moment? So, to him stealing quirks is more like a necessity, and more powerful quirks feel much better than random quirks. That could have made him a quirk thief pretty early on, and perhaps he identified with the demon lord so much simply because of this relentless drive, plus people constantly labeling him a monster for stealing their quirks. Maybe he slowly got desensitized to this lable. What was once a terrible insult that hurt his soul became a compliment he took with glee. Yes, he was a monster, yes, he was a villain; in fact, he would strive to be the _greatest_ villain/monster of them all! All out of some twisted, uno-reverse card to the feelings of guilt that came with a quirk and emptiness he thought he would never escape from.

Hitler had a pretty tragic backstory, no one is born, people who say never look deep enough or analyze enough. Charles Manson lead an extremely tragic life, raped over hundreds of times and beaten, pretty much tortued.

I KNEW IT AND CALLED IT, I knew AFO became a Villian from reading too many comic books also that's the same thing and question I've been asking like what was his backstory and what drove him to become like this since when we first saw him he didn't look human more like a Evil potato head lol especially now in the manga with him becoming younger back in his prime on a rewind timer looking like a ordinary human being but an Evil one that lived over a 100 years with the doctor who works for him stealing Quirks/Superpowers from heroes and villains even children turning them into nomu.
Just a fun little idea
For one Ik Horikoshi talked about the possibility of making a sequel to Mha and if he does do that I can see Shigaraki potentially being the main villain, like for instance he gets defeated in this arc and is Imprisoned and the next series can somewhat focus on him busting out of prison and regaining power in the Underworld since with all these heroes becoming OP and excluding the High Ends (which are are pretty much stronger than any one hero save for the top tiers of the verse) there aren’t an insane amount of Villains that are OP
Sure you got ReDestro Geten and Dabi but those 3 are quite literally Bloodline powerhouses since we know they come from extremely powerful Bloodlines.
Then we have other sporadic Villains from Tartarus but we haven’t seen enough of them to say.
In any case this was all as a comment to lead into the idea that Afo could be reduced to a mere Vestige and we could get more info on him or his background as he’s chatting it up with Shigaraki lol maybe even see two different ones one from Yoichis perspective and one from All for one’s perspective

Honestly I feel like his lack of sympathy could have a few causes;
1.) It has something to do with his quirk. He carries the vestiges of dozens of people around in his head and they're very much capable of acting independent of him if they act together.
2.) he has some kind of disorder like narcissism or antisocial personality disorder. Maybe he acquired it or he was born with it I don't know.
3. Having lived for as long as he has and with how he lives AFO's ability to socialize on a cognitive level is gone.

Honestly, I believed he was a mix of both psychopathy and sociopathy. That he was born with mental issues, but that with time, or therapy, he could have been saved, but he just happened to be also born with a quirk that literally could let him get whatever he wanted.

Everyone is a hero in their own mind. Maybe AFO saw the despotic rule to be the way. Plus an absolute power tends to be very corrupting.

I feel like that’s the charm of AFO. It doesn’t matter why he is the way he is. He simply IS. He’s pure evil and theorizing about his origins only gives him the advantage to our plan and manipulate before you can notice. I love characters that are evil just for the sake of being evil, I think that’s his character.

All For One needs his own hero, someone to love him, and for him to love...so he holds on to his last humanity while achieving what he wants.
I think All For One's mentality is directly connected to this quirk. Throughout the series, we've gotten multiple hints that quirks and the users personality are directly connected. This could explain why All For One is as selfish and greedy as he is apathetic towards others due to his quirk influencing his mind since birth. Another reason why quirks should be purged.

"To take all that's theirs."
I think we also see it with the path that Deku took when he left the school... He tried to give away everything he had and didn't want to be helped. There are many other things involved, yes, but... I think mainly that.

This is the first time I've compared AFO and Yoichi with Deku and Kacchan. The first two read a comic and aspired to create a world based on different ideals they liked from it. The latter two watched the larger-than-life figure All Might and aspired to emanate different aspects of him as their ideal.
I'd actually like it if he didn't have a tragic or deep backstory but instead he just wanted to be the demon lord like from his comic and due to quirks coming about and not to mention the one that he was born with allowed him to pursue this dream and that mindset just grew and grew till eventually he really did become one
Long story short, it's a question of nature vs nurture.
I bet he was in similar to Toya situation but instead of quirks was business or crime empire.

I believe that All For One's real name is Tomura Shigaraki as we know that was a name given to Tenko, so it would make sense for the name "Tomura Shigaraki" to be All For One's real name...
Are we even sure All for One wants to win? I feel like he has been pulling his punches just enough to allow the heroes to win in the end.
I mean think of the time he came from Society was still in stable and people with a power are not seen as humans and they're popping randomly here and there especially for those who have mutation corpse or a cork that for some reason makes their user look different than a normal person in the beginning irri it wouldn't make sense for why people who look more human and had abilities who weren't really harmful at all wood goes around hero path while those who don't look human would start going down the villain path and he had the ability to take people's Powers away permanently I can use it for himself being born in to a Time like this you would definitely see yourself a bit as a monster or the potential to become the greatest monster

Looking back at this after seeing AFO's actual backstory...😬 Nah man, he was just a sad, lonely old man who believed his brother was his property, and that property was stolen from him... and OFA was basically the only thing left of his lost property... their "parent" died upon delivering them, and he killed the "1st Quirk glo-baby" from China for "stealing his title" as the 1st Quirk-holder...
I write most of my fics with one of my OCs having the basic premise that no villain is "too far gone"... except AFO, Muscular and, depending on the fic, Moonfish...
Personally I think being persecuted by quirkless individuals due to having quirks and him being a hitory nerd and seeing humanities misdeeds he had enough of them and wanted them all to rot

Just by his personality wise, it could be because he was born that way. Mentally sick and twisted about taking every quirk to be high in power is something a demon would do. But thats just my word

In philsophy, theres a notion of tabula-rasa that the soul is blank. That what makes a person good ir evil is their experiences. However on the rare chance thats not the case. AFO seems to be that rare case where he was born malicious. Even if he didnt have powers he would have been some type of criminal...be it white color or a serial killer
Psychopaths are usually born that way. Not all of them are evil inherently of course, but anime as a whole kinda lacks people who are just straight up born evil. Except old school anime

He was sadly born mentally ill, so he was doomed to never having a normal life either way. It probably wouldn't have gone as far as it did if he been born in a more stable environment, but he was screwed no matter what.

Here’s a theory just so he isn’t a bland evil for the sake of evil, I would say he wanted to become that demon lord in order to create a world of heroes to oppose him, as without evil villains, true heroes wouldn’t have come about either. Maybe he saw with the advent of quirks, quirk users would automatically see themselves as better than the quirk-less with no moral dilemma of good and evil, creating a world of inequality. Then maybe over the years his original ambition was lost digging himself into the demon lord persona.
