The last Movie completed by veteran Japanese Director Kinji Fukasaku. Shortly after he began filming the Sequel "Battle Royale 2: Requiem" he died of cancer in early 2003.
Takeshi Kitano is awesome, both as an Actor and as a Director. I strongly recommend „Zatoichi“ from 2003.

I challenge anyone who's seen this film to pitch it, or even tell me honestly that it was in any way whatsoever "predictable". Such a masterpiece. This wasn't only the original Squid Game (albeit with a slightly different political message), but the original Ex Machina. It starts off super campy and the performances actually get gradually better as it progresses. I had to watch them both several times before I picked up on it it's so sneaky. SO well done. Some damned talented kids in this film.
The basketball stuff was mostly cut from the theatrical release, and I don't miss it.
We should've watched that one 😂
27:18 It's surprising that these guys collectively missed the obvious signal: the teacher actually had a real gun, in addition to the toy water gun. I blame the terrible English subtitle, which made a lot of things lost in translation.
Never heard of this movie before, i have enjoyed watching it with you guys, I'll definitely watch it again. It makes hunger games look like a rip-off

Yeah, but it wasn't banned in the US. It's because it wasn't released several years later until 2012.
Those flashback scenes (basketball, backstories, etc) were kind of inserted awkwardly in the film. They weren't in the original theatrical release.
Also alot of Slam-Dunk references in those scenes. Literally the least original part of the film. Even theirnred uniforms are near identical. Just missing the black numbers.
Thise scenes always kind of annoyed me because of that.

they mention the u15s thing at the beginning because the director wanted the movie to represent the struggle of the youth today only for them not to be allowed to see it

My favorite is the cinema cut! The Extended Cut with the basketball game drags everything unnecessarily! Also that the extended scenes all run again at the end before the credits, is bad for the effect of the movie!

just so you know there is a sequel to this movie, but its pretty mediocre compared to this besides the beginning because the director of the first movie died shortly into his filming of the sequel and his son had to take over. still worth a watch possibly. Nobody else on youtube has reacted to it just a couple reviews :)
