  • A classically trained pianist reacts to some Simply Piano Ads.
    Simply Piano is a massive meme in many piano communities because of their interesting ads, but are they really as dubious as people make them out to be? Well, I guess it's time to find out!
    Quick note: this is not a commentary on Simply Piano's methodology or the people shown in the ads, this a reaction/review of the ads themselves and the curriculum shown in the ads. Also, there are many other more experienced teachers than me especially when it comes to working with complete beginners, so take my comments with a grain of salt :)
    Also, not sure why my camera is coming through so soft. I'm definitely looking into it.

    I'm a piano technician, and I've gotten several new clients whose child downloaded this app from an ad, and tried to learn the piano. But if your piano is out of tune it will always mark you as playing the wrong note. So I like this app simply cause it's caused more people to call me to tune their piano. Also they hear me play Chopin or Beethoven and realize they need real teachers

      I disagree the app is completely bullshit.
      The only thing you learn is sight read which is good, but this is the only thing.
      It doesn't teach you rythm, improve your ear, posture, theory, dynamics, techniques
      So basically youre just hitting the keys, without any understanding and it doesn't sound good cause you dont know any rythm, dynamics or techniques
      Edit: You cant even really learn how to sight read, cause you dont learn any rythms, so if u try to sight read an song for the first time and you only learned with simply piano, it will have terrible rhythm and my understanding is that playing the correct rythm is a part of sight reading

    I started playing the piano at 17, and actually don't find being able to play songs in a month to be unrealistic at all -- in fact, my progress was somewhat similar (of course, as you mentioned, this comes with obsessiveness, I was at it for several hours a day). I didn't find memorizing that hard either. But, especially with the second ad, there is no way in hell that the guy just naturally has near-perfect hand posture, and can sing AND play without breaking posture, after a month. I just don't buy it.
    I think that it's definitely possible to play simple tunes after a month -- people do it on the guitar all the time, for instance. However, that technique is a clear giveaway. Unless the guy was a pro keyboardist and organist, but not a "pianist" lol.
    With the kid, the rhythm is suspiciously good. It's harder to maintain good rhythm when you have the sheet music annoyingly scrolling by you like that.
    What I find more unrealistic is that these people are apparently playing along with a score. If they played the same pieces, after a month, with okay-ish technique and memorized, it wouldn't be that hard to believe. That's probably easier than playing the start of Fur Elise, which should be possible in a month imo

    • @tommydashed4205
      @tommydashed4205 Před rokem

      This is a year old but I tought myself the entirety of Fur Elise and Let It Be in a single month. Although I didn't learn it through learning to read notes or any app, I just kind of figured it out by sound and watching videos of people playing to see how they moved their hands.

  • @thepianoplayer416
    @thepianoplayer416 Před rokem +2

    Have a teacher and don't use an app for learning. About 5 years ago attended a Christmas gathering. Half the people in the room took lessons with a teacher, some passed conservatory exams. There was a keyboard in the room. When asked to play a tune nobody volunteered. Music is supposed to be fun. Nowadays many people including myself would share their music on social media.
    The point of using Simply Piano is not learning proper techniques from day 1 but to learn pieces quickly to a performance level. When we're playing easy pieces, we don't notice problems with techniques. At a young age a hand can't reach an octave so we see hands playing in an awkward way. When he gets older, his hands get bigger so he can play more naturally in a relaxed way. At least the boy in the ad is enjoying the learning experience and able to play a tune. The rhythm part is just repetition. Repeating the same notes & chords many times at regular intervals you learn to keep a steady beat.
    The older man playing Ode to Joy... specifically the first part of OtJ is doable. We have the first 5 notes in the C scale CDEFG in different order EEFGGFED etc. with each finger next to each other in the C position can be taught in lesson 1.
    The experience at the party where half the people took lessons with a teacher but nobody has the confidence to play a tune is not what you want to see. Even if the technique is off at least the self-taught pianist is able to play something.

    She uses his name. How is that weird? People use names to talk to people, that's how names work?
    No. We use names to address someone specifically, e.g. in an conversation with multiple people, or when we call for them from far away. No one instinctively uses names in a one-on-one conversation with people they are close to, because it seems redundant and unpersonal. To say it had to be a deliberate decision.

    Being completely honest I started playing piano with simply piano, no teacher. The app helps to read music, but it doesn’t teach you the proper technique and posture, there are a few videos but they are not enough. I think simply piano with a teacher is the best way to start, it is like extra practice reading notes and coordinating. I only used simply piano for 6 months tho... and exactly today it’s my 2nd year of playing piano :D, I can say that my technique was pretty sh*t when I first got a teacher, but right now I think it is pretty decent, I would not recommend to just learn with simply piano if someday you want to play Rachmaninoff or Chopin with a solid interpretation

When I started out, I was able to play with both hands independently and I was able to pick up some basic, but still actual pieces from things people played on Synesthesia and the like. I was able to keep time well enough and though the hand placement took a bit of time, usually after practicing for 30-60 minutes I could place the first few passages within a piece. Claire De Lune was one of the first pieces I learned and it was up until the rolling Arpeggios.
    Now I learned that about month after starting and it took me about 2-3 weeks practicing to get that part down. Technically speaking... I had 'never played piano' before. But I 'did' have 15 years of guitar experience in my past.

    i am self taught actually. i learned a lot from my grandmother who is AMAZING at piano. she taught me posture, hands, octaves, and key signatures. but besides that, ive taught myself and i can even play things like moonlight sonata and have it seamlessly fade into other songs. i think that simply piano has potential, but it doesnt have the right approach. i had downloaded the app as a joke to see what made it so bad and from my own take on it:
    1. it doesnt teach you how different speeds work. they wont understand if sheet music says 100 bpm and they would be really confused if something like 6/8 a measure appeared.
    2. it doesnt teach about pedals, which are SUPER important when changing the mood of a song and can make a huge difference.
    3. the way it teaches the base and left hand is COMPLETELY inaccurate. its all just chords with left and simple notes. there is NO hand independence.
    4. they're ads do something that ticks me off. they play things that make it sound amazing to people who dont play piano. but once they get better they realize that they could have learned that easily and maybe even better with a teacher.
    they have potential though, and j hope that they fix these mistakes

      @F1shM!nn hey, Ive been playing the piano for 7 years now with a teacher. I really love classical music and adore Debussy, Chopin, Tschaikovsky etc. Hate classicim tho, my motor skills just arent good enough for playing Mozart and Im totally fine with that. But there are people who want to play songs from musicals or pop or rock songs, that dont need as much technique and they are very suitable to be learned as a pattern, since most of the songs are composed in fragments like verse, chorus, bridge, that repeat themselves. And you dont need a teacher for that.

      @F1shM!nn 2 hours with a teacher costs as much as this app for a whole year. it's not even close in price

    • @MarioRodriguez-gr8wc
      @MarioRodriguez-gr8wc Před 2 lety +1

      @F1shM!nn a teacher is the same as the app? So a teacher is going to give you the same number of hours an app will? How is that even possible?
