  • A youtuber contacted me about a honda 5000 generator that came with a house he bought, it was serviced for bad fuel 10 years ago then never ran after, lets see how a machine that was stored correctly can stand the test of time.

    Hey Mustie1, I did it!!! Went to the junk yard and there was a 3.5 kw generator. Pulled the rope and the engine turned over. Payed 5 bucks for it and they loaded it. Got home and performed the mustie1 procedure. Got spark, put fuel in the cylinder and it fired a little. Took the carb off and cleaned it up. Put on a clean fuel tank and it fired right up and the 110 volt and 12 volt work great. If it wasn't for your videos I would never had attempted something like this. Thank you so much for your videos.

    I worked in a company that hired out commercial marquees of various sizes. We used to have to drive in steel pegs 800mm by 22mm to hold the ropes in place. We had the exact generator that you have there we used to power a hitachi jack hammer. Instead of having a bit with a diamond point we had a cup fitting made up to push the pegs in. In the 3 years the only things that broke were the rubber mounts under the motor when it was knocked 4 feet off the deck of a truck. just bombproof.

      i actually got a pristeen baja dirt runner 125 dirt bike for 50 bucks. chinese company no longer exists but its a clone of a honda 150. litterally no hours and i got to break the engine in myself with the new oil that came in it. still those little strings on the tire knobs cause it hardly ran. the guy who had it couldnt fix it. it was flooding. i took the carb apart and pulled a spec of hose rubber out from between the needle and seat in an otherwise new carb. it runs like a swiss watch to this day. it has a screw on the bottom of the carb and a line that runs down so i can turn the gas off and drain the carb. i kindof get jellous of musty and his free finds but i also got a perkins 403D 11 small 3 cylinder diesel from my boss for free. came out of a portable light tower. very clean and very low hours by the looks of it. oil is great and everything is there that it needs to run. about a 5,000 dollar motor by itself and mine has the radiator and everything when normally they dont. that is going to make one good solid medium duty truck of a diesel gokart

      I learned my lesson after a $357 repair bill on my motorcycle ... Left regular gas in it for over a year ... So you know exactly what happened. And its funny the mechanic told me, if you ever let the motorcycle sit for several months at a time, turn OFF the fuel line and run it until it stalls out and DRAIN the bowl ... And lastly USE ethanol free fuel ALL the time ...
      I have applied that to both my motorcycles, both my generators and my lawnmower... And i have never went back to that mechanic ... He lost my $$ ...
      And i actually make it a point to actually crank up the generators once a month ... and let them run for 15 min JUST so that i don't have to drain the bowls ...

    Mustie, I want to thank you for all the videos on making old equipment run again. I watched a lot of them. I had a lawn mower that sat for 2 years with fuel in it. You can imagine the mess I found. I felt the carburetor would really be messed up and it sure was. I have never, ever worked on a small engine carburetor, but because of your videos, I went through the same procedures you do, spark, compression then the carb. itself. It was terrible, but using what you had shown, I was able to clean and adjust and now I have a great runnin' mower. Thanks for your very informative videos. Hi Mustie! Your Channel popped up in my recommended feed, yesterday and of course I clicked on it! And watched your vlogs for about four hours! Very informative and interesting!
    I have a property that was involved in a flash flooding in July 2017, 8 inches of rain in less than five hours ! And there are 4 out buildings that had 24 inches of river water in them for less than six hours, here's the problem in the garden shed I had three push mowers, an emergency generator, a tiller, and tons of other garden machines , a 3 hp wood chipper that was new purchased a month earlier!
    I'm not a mechanic! Never wanted to be ! But when I tried to start them after they were dried out , the generator and wood chipper would not turnover, and two of the three push mowers didn't start! The mowers , I put by the roadside and were picked up within 15 minutes! Sound familiar?
    The generator and wood chipper are still in the shed! I have thought that maybe they are repairable! Since they weren't in water that long, but have had several surgeries since the flooding that prevented me from dealing with them! I just replaced them with new ones!
    Is it worth it to see if they will run at this point! Both have B and S engines the generator is a Generic (sic) 8000 with 6 120/240 amp outlets, of course my insurance didn't cover anything although they said don't worry everything I own was totally covered when I contacted the agent the day of flooding!
    I have thought about just replacing the motors?

    I should have made a video of what happens when you don't put it up properly. I have that same generator bought new 20 years ago. It generally sees use once or twice a winter during outages. I usually treat the fuel with seafoam, run it through the carb and call it good. Never had a problem until this year. Drug it out when the power went out. No worky. Couldn't even get fuel to the bowl. Pulled the carb and it was 100 times as bad as i have ever seen any old and neglected unit. Looked like it was filled with cement. Was able to get one the next day for under twenty bucks and was back in business. Lesson learned!

    @adir_1 Před 5 lety +1

    That’s a nice little Honda! You might try looking inside the end cap on the generator head usually there is an AVR module in there with a small screw you can turn to adjust the voltage. When I adjusted mine I used the screw on the engine as you did to set hz and then adjusted the AVR afterwards. Also with this being a 240 volt unit, there are two 120v “circuits” and when you place a 120v load on one circuit of the generator head it will cause the other circuits voltage to raise. I’m assuming that duplex outlet is setup where the top plug is circuit one and the bottom #2. This is why you were reading low (124v with no load) and high (128v) after the heat gun started. With a 240v gen it is best to balance equal loads on each of the two circuits to keep things balanced. Nice video!

  • @roberthughes6240
    @roberthughes6240 Před 5 lety

    the frequency at 62Hz was spot on, in the uk we opperate on 50Hz so we set our generators to 52Hz, this is to allow the engine to achive the correct speed at full load, not sure what the rating of your heat gun but I think its not even half load for this generator, when i built generators we full load tested every one to make sure they achived 50Hz at full load. 52Hz was at 3125rpm so for you 62Hz would be at I guess 3725ish, never built a 60Hz personally but our overseas depots did. love the videos.

    OK OK you have now shamed me into going out to the shop and test running my generator today. I had not thought about checking the out put voltage so I will check that while I run it. Great video and it is a Honda and you know they will run all the time unless they have been abused

    Hey Mustie, that thing looked brand new. It is a Honda though. I finally got something to play with. We got a bout a foot of snow and found a '79 Ariens snow blower with a 7hp Tecumseh. The guy was asking $100. It had a blown head gasket, so I offered $50 and he said $60, so I bought it. In decent shape, I got a new head gasket and tune up kit for $19. I'm glad I watched a couple videos because one guy said to make sure points were parallel. It has great spark now. Had a little trouble getting head bolts off. 2 started to round off and then I decided to try a 12 mm which I had to persuade to go on but worked fine. Works great. Had to lube the controls a bit. Changed the oil which was pretty black. Only had one tire chain which is about to fall off, but can make up a new set for about $15. Sure beats shoveling. Thanks for sharing and showing how much proper care when storing a machine can make life so much easier.

    124v is perfect, you want to run stiffer on gens or transformers sooner than under voltage so when you hit it with load it can still maintain your ref voltage. Even with 10% above is acceptable. Great work on the gen it's a beauty!

  • @BrucesShop

    Well that is one sweet Genset. I think the older ones are just a bit better than the new ones (although it is a OHV). (commenting as I go). I am working on one right now with a REALLY rusty tank. That has to be the sweetest used Genset i have ever seen. Put away correctly.

    I also can hear when you started the generator to run out of fuel, it has good compression, a little difficult to explain but you know what i mean Mustie1. 😊

  • @Homir10
    @Homir10 Před 5 lety

    You might want to rethink the frequency adjustment. Generator droop will pull the frequency down as the loading increases. You have 60 hz at 24% load. At full load the frequency Will likely be 58 hz or so. Adjust for the expected running load.
    As usual, a great video. Thank you.

    Mustie1, I live in Connecticut and we had a really big snow storm in October of 2012, a tornado last year and a really bad wind storm this year. With regards to maintanence, when the power comes on, I shut off my generator, switch back to power from the pole, then before anything else, while the engine is still warm, I change the oil and empty the carburetor. It's been a good habit to get into and the generator is then ready to run for the next power outage.
