I put it down so the driver knows exactly where I want it. It makes cleaning the driveway after much easier. I can save one shovel-into-the-wheelbarrow trip by dragging the tarp over to where I'm spreading dirt then shake it clean. How's that! 🙂
And here I just had a landscaper try to tell me he brought 4 yards of dirt in a 8’ bed pickup bed.

It was top soil, not sandy, so probably about 1 ton x 4 = 4 tons. (8,000 lbs.)

Maybe! I have a midsize with a weight limit of 1,500 lbs. One yard of dirt weighs 2,200.
In theory, but for the average pickup bed it will weigh too much.
Average pickup truck will handle two yards max
