Cybertruck Suspension Discussion & How to do a Tire Rotation

  • Back in my shop (Joe's Last Chance Garage) and today I'm going to do a tire rotation on my Cybertruck! I recommend you perform this work every 5,000 miles to extend the life of your tires and also, use the opportunity to see how the vehicle alignment is holding up before you run into tire issues.
Also, because I have the Cybertruck on the lift with the wheels and tires removed, I take this opportunity to discuss and illustrate some of the key features and design of the front and rear suspension, along with some information I've gathered about the Cybertruck from the Giga Texas factory as I've covered it's construction and have toured the Cybertruck production line.
As with all work on vehicles, I recommend you understand what you are doing before starting, use the proper equipment, and also reference the Cybertruck Service manual and documents to be aware of the proper lifting points, wheel lug torque specifications and have a helper along with you, both for safety and also because I found the wheels and tires to be quite heavy, especially as compared to the typical vehicles I see in my shop.
I hope you find this video, the topics discussed and the process of rotating the tires helpful and informative!

A very gifted and knowledgeable man is Joseph Tegtmeyer; as well as soft spoken, polite, and courteous (we could use a lot more of that in our society). I was hoping Joe would talk a little bit about the Tire tread pattern as it seems to be highly unusual.

In the long term, tire rotation and such will save a great deal on money and almost certainly extend the lifetime of whatever type of vehicle you have. Great info. Cheers Joe.

Wow Joe! you have lots of experience in the restoration of cars!, that Honda S600 is a beauty and the Datsun looked in fantastic condition - great workshop Joe thanks for a great episode - take care! By the way the Cybertruck looks like it's landed from another planet, against the other vehicles! 😊

I run my Cyberbeast in chill mode, low/soft suspension setting, full regen. Amazing smooth, confident experience. It appears it is mostly a “front wheel drive” in this setting. No issue, works great with the permanent mag up front. Busy in town, metro traffic, 252-279WPM. As such, I will cross rotate every 3k miles, 5k miles if most is highway driving. This will help keep off road tire tread less noisy, and keep tread wear even.

I've always gone by the old rule that you never cross rotate radial tires (only bias ply tires). I wonder when that rule changed.

Hi Joe, thanks for the video. Is the X rotation pattern recommended by Tesla? I'm curious. I have always rotated front to back and back to front to keep the tires rotating in the same direction.
But maybe I have been doing it wrong. And what about the tire pressure monitors in each tire. Do they need to be reset for placement on the truck ?
Thanks for all your hard work.

I am curious about that as well. Maybe the tire mfr would have some thoughts. Since I went to radials 50 years ago, I understood 2crossing was a no no per Michelin..

I'd be interested in other DIY maintenance for Tesla. Brakes in particular. Using Regen all the time doesn't wear out the pads but I think the calipers,, slides etc should be serviced. I'm sure there are other things that would probably need to be done.
    You explained this so well.
If using jack stands how exactly would you do that ie, one floor jack at the lift point, where do you place the jack stands? The jack is at the lift point.
    Again, great video.

Joe on my hub centric type wheels when I r&r wheels I smear a VERY small amount of antisieze on the rusty hub register for next removal also you can use hockey pucks and screw on a small rubber stopper to make jack pads!

@@michaelhess4825 I did that for the video … I do in fact have an air gun and used it off screen, but to get the correct torque, I recommend you use a torque wrench. Thank you for watching.

The images didn't show the jack stands though just the four primary lift points. Or the video just made it hard to see. In the service manual it shows the lift points and then a smaller double circle area for the actual stands. Figure 3 in section 10-1000-Raise Vehicle - Jack

    1. The truck looks clean. What's your method? I have a bunch of water spots and rust and etching streaks from a water spot remover that dripped. Just did 2 panels with Citrisurf 77 and blue Scotch bright.....good as new. Your thoughts on Bar keepers friend? I bought DIY metal coating, but scared to use it yet until the panels are all new.
    2. My model Y went 10K before I rotated. Front and rears had less than 2/32 difference until then.
    3. I was taught to not use a torque wrench to remove stuff. Could affect the accuracy of the instrument. Harbor Freight has a nice breaker bar with lifetime warranty for cheap. Use my Milwaukee now for a quick job.

Thanks for this good educational video. Probably most owners will have this work done at Tesla Certified garage or tire shop, but having watched your video, they will know what is going on and what to look for. Having a Tesla gives owners far more control (and understanding) of all aspects of the car's operation through the app and the touchscreen.
Also, as an aside, your video reminded me of HeavyD Sparks Cybertruck videos, especially the one where they replaced the wheels with outboard snow tracks (making it a mini-Cyber Snow Cat!). 🙂 Unfortunately, they hit some bump in the snow going too fast and broke the thick vertical suspension rod on the front left wheel. The rest of that video was a "trail fix" to get the vehicle off the mountain. 🤥 Other videos showed off-road Cybertruck performances in sand dunes and rocky trails. Good advertisement and many nice things said about Tesla!

With radial tires you should not change tire rotation. You should rotate from front to rear on same side or you will get tread separation
