- This is an extremely cheap trip to experience when you're in Rio. Taking the Santa Teresa Tram from the centre of the city, across the fabulous Arcos da Lapa Aqueduct and on and up into the residential suburbs on the hillside.
This historic route is the oldest electric railway in the whole of Latin America and in this video I'll be taking you along as we traverse the cobbled streets of this fascinating neighbourhood rising to give us some fantastic views back towards the city. I'll show you where to go to catch the tram and I'll tell you how much it costs.
Thanks very much guys for those of you that do watch this video. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and spurs me on to improve the channel for everyone.
Cheers for now.
Mark

Good job that women's dress didn't catch in that fence going over the crossing!
It can still feel a bit exposed tbh yep 👍
Great old tram Mark, thanks for the tour 👍
Cheers mate, thanks as always for commenting 😊👍
My only time in RIO was a one-day visit!! Varig Brasils National Airline CEO insisted all service contracts had to be signed in person!! So arrived AM departed PM Meeting took one hour at 9am. They then gave us a full tour even a coffee with Ronnie. 1997 Flight Varig DC10 13.5 Hrs Via Sao Paulo. What a wonderful place!!!!!! Would have liked to have stayed longer.
Great story Peter, loved the DC10 too. I came back via São Paulo, just transferring at the airport but the LATAM lounge was great. It’s one of those countries I’d love to go back to now and ultimately, that’s the best kind of trip when you come back feeling that isn’t it. Loved it!
Loved the look of the heritage tram. What a nice thing to do. Surprised by the architecture of that catholic cathedral. Not at all what we would expect.
Thanks, yes definitely worth a trip if you’re in Rio. I didn’t have time to go in the cathedral but yep, quite modern isn’t it.
Lol 😮 a lot of tourists on that tram 👍 you mentioned San Francisco my fav song by Tony Bennett 💕 your a very lucky man Mark seeing All these lovely places we'll done m8 all the best John 😊
Cheers John, I am a bit but I got to the age where I thought if I don’t do it now…….
That looked fab. I thorough enjoyed watching and listening to history of the line.
Cheers mate and thanks for watching it 😊👍
I watched a Miles in Transit video recently of a similar tram in Buenos Aires though this one gives much better views due to the topography of Rio so thanks for making the effort.
Cheers mate, thanks as always for giving it a watch.
Very good video, Mark! This tram offers great views from above and from the quarters it's passing through. Interesting beehive building that can be seen several times in the last part of the video.
Thanks Dirk. You may be talking about the cathedral there at the end?
@@LetsMakeaTripAt 08:20, left of the twin towers. Looks a bit like a cropped cone. I thought it might be an apartment building.
@@dirkupnmoor yes the Metropolitan Cathedral 😊
@@LetsMakeaTrip Thanks.
That's a good hidden gem in Rio. To be fair, I did not even know it had a tram but it is a proper old school one at good price
Yes I only found out when i was over there, definitely worth a trip though and a bit more interesting than the modern ones. That aqueduct is amazing too 👍
Nice! Never knew this was a thing when I was there! I think determining whether somewhere is upscale or not is based on how many buildings seem to be “borrowing” electricity off the grid. Not sure if you went, but Urca at the bottom of Sugarloaf Mountain is a really nice area, especially at dusk.
I didn’t get to Urca no. Agree with the electricity observation though, Mexico City was a bit like that!
Thanks Mark for this video, I know it is highly unlikely that i will ever get to Rio, but the tram ride looked fascinating and with your usual local knowledge and history makes it very interesting for all your viewers 😊
Thanks Diana. This was just a little extra thing I did when I was over there tbh. I’m not sure it’s really what the channel wants but thought it was worth sharing anyway. All I would say is, if you get the chance, take it. It’s not as far away or as difficult as you may think, even though hardly anyone speaks English. Yes the metro’s a nightmare and there does look to be some dodgy bits but I had a great time as a solo traveller and didn’t feel unsafe at any time. 😊
There is a old heritage tram in the old down town area in the port of Santos Mark.About a 20 min ride though the old town near to the Pele museum.
Cheers Duncan. Two things there I never got to do unfortunately. Maybe next time 😊
Love it! Certainly brings back memories - in my 2001 trip, the old trams ran (it was free to stand outside - but at about R$2 at the time (50p) it was worth the safety of the interior!
I’ve stood on the running boards in San Francisco- 5hat was fantastic though I’m not sure if that’s allowed anymore either. H&S etc but I think when you read about the accident that happened in Rio, you can see why it was stopped.
A lovely trip thank you so much, take care and stay safe, cheers.
Cheers Simon 😊👍
That's a pretty cool little tram, Mark. No idea this even existed. Nice views from the viaduct. Did most people just take the tram from end to end or was there any intermediate stops of interest?
Yes there were one or two interesting-looking stops along the way. Most stayed on because of the time of day I suspect otherwise, yep, I would’ve got off, had a look around, and caught a later one.
Such a great ride! Amazing views.
Bargain too. Thanks for the comment 😊
It's like you're back on the Isle of Man mate :) brilliant video!
Apart from the weather! Cheers Steve 😊
Hahaha I was thinking that too
Great video,I just pity the horses that had to haul up those hills (pre electric)
Yep, anything like that I always feel sorry for the horses.
Wow 2 videos in one week
Was gonna say I love the tram but i would love to travel there
I highly recommend it😊
Rather reminiscent of Lisbon. Those tangles of electric cables (4:00) are very typical of Brazil. Electrician's nightmare! 😰
Yep, similar to the streets in Mexico I seem to recall too. Wires everywhere!
Can't get used to videos from Singapore and Brazil. More used to buses from small English and/or Welsh towns
Back to normal next week mate 😊👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip Good! Something reassuring about buses between rural provincial towns.
None of this international glamour travel.
You seem to be seeing fair bit of the World lately, That's awesome.. Brazil is a country I've always quite liked to Visit, Not surpisingly I guess I'm kinda getting Portugal vibes. Whilst I would love to visit I feel I would be paranoid watching my back all the time. Still great vids from Brazil. :)
Cheers Eunos! It’s very much a Portuguese vibe I think. Not much a English spoken but I never felt unsafe tbh. Absolutely loved it there 😊👍
You said it was the second to last tram of the day, but you passed two trams in the other direction on the return journey
Well-spotted Alice (I thought someone would). The ticket office closed at 4 but I gather anyone left in the queue at that point will get a ride. So they must’ve put this last one on to pick up the remnants of that. So 2nd, 3rd last yep, much of a muchness but you get the idea I hope 😊
Seems like it needs to run later than that. Guess the single track section dictates a 20 min service is the best they can do?
🥇🥇👍👍👍👍
Cheers mate 👍👍👍
Any Singapore/Brazil air journeys coming up?
Hi Anthony. I’m afraid not. I enjoyed taking these videos but for the hours it takes to film, edit and upload vs viewing numbers, it’s just not worth my time putting them together to be perfectly honest.
When telling us the prices, it helps to know that the plural of Real is Reais (pronounced ray-aysh). Falo Portugues Moçambicano.
What station do you catch the tram please, as I’ve read Carioca sta. but there is also an underground i kind of get mix up :)
Glad it reopened after the accident, which at one time looked like it wouldn't. However I'm not sure whether the pick pocket and mugging problem has been resolved. Whilst you say the houses look posh, the amount of graffiti implies otherwise.
Cheers for the comment Brian. What I meant with the houses I suppose is that they must’ve been fantastic at some point - maybe wealthy owners and I guess these days they’ve been overrun by well, who knows what. But like you say, the amount of graffiti implies this part of Rio’s changed a bit!
