You’re right. This is real courage. Garp went there for redemption. Dadan represents his conscience and said the things he couldn’t say. But I think he should have gone there alone for his beating. Not as a Marine.
It was out of duty, not bravery, he knew he needed to be punished, he was guilty and knew it wasn’t right that the navy was commending him for his actions. He allowed his son to die at the end of the day, not only that he allowed luffys brother and Dadans son to die, he understood this and had to face some form of consequence.

Dadan really is Luffy & Ace's Mother, Sabo too, but she raised those 2 boys and even though she tries to hide her softer side, she loves them with all her heart and this scene breaks my heart.

During the war, he helped ace to escape by not punching luffy bc we all know if garp being serious he can beat anyone even roger. Moreover, he is marine and in other view ace is criminal. And he love ACE as well, He almost kill Akainu if no one stop him.
