Firstly, loved this line, “I’m the world champion at a race that goes for 4 hours.”
Secondly, I prefer hot racing when it’s cold and cold racing when it’s hot! Lol

Definitely hot climate the warmer the better, don’t get me wrong I will be slower on race day but simply physiological with the lower body fat I’m able to dissipate the heat maybe better than others! Finally, it’s all about the mental approach if you have a positive mindset on facing the element that you can’t control no matter what the days throws you will succeed! Stay positive on cold, warm, windy, or rainy race day! Your attitude drives the day!

Goldie Locks here id preferer the temperature to be juussst right...but if I had to pick I would go Hot weather, there is just something about dawn summer runs, its already 25*C and the suns not even up, its exhilarating, not to mention my toes don't go numb! Keep up the awesome vlogs Lucy, I'm loving watching all you do and cant wait to see a perfect set of transitions after all your practice!

I prefer racing in hot weather more than cold weather. I had a few race experiences swimming in cold water and always felt dizzy on my way out. I actually crashed on my first lap during the bike course before because I got way too dizzy from the cold. It was painful honestly but I had a laugh later on after the race.
To add to that, I have no clue if there is a correlation but I actually swim better when the conditions are warm/hot. Last week during WCTS Abu Dhabi I managed to improve my time by 30 seconds... and that's a lot for a swim thats 750 Meters. I came out 20th overall and we were about 400+ athletes.
In general I prefer the heat!
By the way, it was an honour meeting you and taking a photo with you.
Thank you for your time Lucy!

Hot weather racing! It truly separates the men from the boys! Plus, you can drink a lot before, during and after. And take too many trips to the bathroom. LOL!

I love when its warm and cosy. I hate cold water as i can barely breath in it. The whole body is just more relaxed in the heat, but i fight to not get overheated and try to rest wet the whole time. We will miss you racing Lucy but have a good break and see you next year! 👍

Love the hot weather - the race becomes a battle of mental strength and means you have to handle the mental and physical stress better than those around you. There’s less margin for error in things like nutrition as well. That’s why Kona is such a spectacular event each year.

  • @yiruluo

I like warm weather racing more. Partly because its much easier to warm up and do all the pre-race stuff when its not 12C outside and partly because I hate riding and running with bare feet in the cold.

  • @WilliamFernandoCastilloHerrera

grew up in (and still live in) hot and humid. I much prefer cold. in heat and humidity my sweat rate is insane, and I need to keep hydration as a major focus, and performance comes second. In the winter months, however, I can throw on a few layers, go for a few hours, and barely break a sweat. I focus on performance and hydration becomes second fiddle. Also, all of my running distance PRs (5k/10k/half marathon/marathon) were in 40-50F weather. There is a 'too cold' though, I ran a half marathon once in 26F (-3C) and recovery was absolutely horrible!!

Hey Lucy, thanks so much for this video! I was waiting for this one so impatiently. I saw your race in Abu Dhabi on tv and was cheering you and GTB. Kudos to your great T1. Thanks for sharing your tactics and insights of your race here. This is not typical, so I really appreciate it. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that, when you train to improve your VO2 max to being able to push those quick kicks to stay in the pack is not going to have a negative effect on your long-race endurance skills. I really want to see you win Kona 2022. I believe you can crush it next year! I actually love to train in the heat, however I always preferred to race in the cold - ideally with wind. This always gave me an advantage whereas the heat had its toll. A really big fan of Team CB😊

I love racing in "perfect weather". Not too hot, not too cold!
I started triathlon in Australia so it was very hot but the weather was always beautiful. Swimming in the beautiful sea on the Gold Coast, riding along the wide roads and running beside the beach is ALWAYS more enjoyeable when the sun is out. When it is raining, I'm constantly worrying about how wet everything is going to be by the time I get to transition. Rain makes everything harder for my parents supporting me on scene too :)

  • @danel3912
    @danel3912 Před 2 lety +6

Cold conditions by far. My transpiration levels are much higher in the hot, so cramping and GI issues come easier. Furthermore, if you are mentally prepared to handle rain or hard conditions, you have already won lots of positions in the final ranking before the race starts because usually people don't like to perform in the rain or cold

As per your question about hot or cold racing I definatel prefer hot weather because I'm from Florida. I have raced hot and cold in all distances and prefer heat management over trying to keep my core warm. But seriously give me partly cloudy and 70° (21°c) with no wind anyday...

  • @91kaveesh
    @91kaveesh Před 2 lety +1

I personally prefer Hot climate for race for following reasons :
    1. Faster T1 as there is no wet suit to worry about .
    2. No cold air shock to the core system during the bike leg .
    3. Lesser training and event gear required .
    4. Warm up duration required is lesser as compared to cold climate condition .
    5. Can enjoy ice cold water as part of hydration.
    6. You can slack off a bit during aero position on the bike as hotter air is less denser as compared to colder air .

Every time I used to go to Spain for vacations my run felt so good and easy. I was flying and much stronger in uphill runs. Short of doing up cleats really tight I think the solution is a step through, as in leg in between other leg and bike frame. Avoiding the unclip twist!

And there's nothing worse than freezing cold hands on the bike or running with two ice blocks as feet (a literal brick session) 🙈

To be honest, I don't really like any of the extremes, but if I had to decide, I would pick the hot climates as you don't have to pay too much attention on putting several layers on or taking a break/ finishing and be afraid of getting too cold.

Congratulations on the Abu Dhabi race result; love seeing/hearing the insights. As for the preferred race weather - heat, no question. I've done sprint through Ironman races in the cold (or at least in really cold water for the latter), and there is nothing worse than riding or running in frozen feet. I did a sprint race years ago (mid-October in Connecticut) in which I didn't feel my feet until 2M into the final 5K run. I've done sprint races that had pool swims that transitioned into bike rides at ~5 degrees C - that is horrific. I've had my moments with heat, but I'd much prefer that.

I prefer heat because it gives me practice for my first Kona event in 2022! Plus it’s nice to be able to have a holiday after the event. In the heat I find it easier to warm up as I get cold very easily!

As always, great vid, and congrats on a great race! Personally I like to schedule warmer races, but ironically I always seem to do better when it is cool and rainy. I'm larger than some and I guess I just respond better in the cooler weather.

Definitely cold weather for me (and for most people I guess)
I think the reason is that hot weather misses up your body balance (electrolyte...etc) and can totally blow you up.
On the other hand, cold weather just takes some extra calories from your body to warm you up.
Another reason is that the body heats up during physical activity, so cold weather neutralizes that heat, while hot weather would add up to your internal body heat and would further worsen the situation.

Definitly warmer conditions. I struggle a lot with cold conditions by getting cold hands, cold feet, shivering and so on. I even have to wear gloves when it is around 7-10°C :D I always think people are mad when wearing shortsleeves without gloves in freezing conditions. So definitly warm conditions. And i also think that i can cope warmer conditions pretty good just as you said.

Just returning to triathlon aged 68 from cycling always prefer hot weather racing/training as it means less kit to consider and the sun always gives that feel good factor.

I love hot weather and getting sweaty, probably more because I hate the cold and so end up wearing too much and then overheating during a run. Massive congrats on the race, keep going as you have clearly got what it takes to get to the top of these distances as well as the longer ones

Definitely hot weather - don't need to work harder to keep a consistent body temperature and warm the muscles up

This year I will do my first half distance triathlon. To me its all about the experience and the adventure of trying something new. I really enjoy getting out of my confort zone trying different things, weather, water conditions, terrain, etc. this way I know I can grow as an athlete.

Great video, Lucy! I personally prefer racing in a colder climate because we get to wear a wet suit! The extra bouyancy gives me more confidence on the water

Great racing Lucy, transitions are getting a lot better and I’m sure you’ll show it in the next race 💪👍. And I prefer to race in hot climate as I’m I just used to it racing and training in Lanza.

I prefer cold weather. In very hot climates, temperature and dehydration are very important and can make you faint. However, in cold climates fainting is very difficult and it is more likely that you will just drop performance. Oh and most importantly you have to drink a hot chocolate at the end of the race. All the best.

I started triatlon trainning two years ago and LOVE your channel! I'd rather train in the heat. I don't like to wear many layers of clothing, I prefer to go only with shorts and a sportsbra. Besides, there is nothing better than feeling super warm after trainning and having something fresh to drink!
    Greetings from Spain!

Great race and you will only get better as you define those skills 💪 the more you train the luckier you get 😄.
Racing in cold weather, it might start out cold however as the race progresses you warm up, being able to push harder to stay warm and little chance of over heating ☃️

Warm, overall. Individually I prefer running in colder weather, but for the bike, I definitely prefer warmer. Because the ride takes more time, the balance is on the warmer side.

Hey Lucy Girl, thanks for the inspiration as usual. Living and mainly racing on the east coast of Australia, IM Port Macquarie in May is reasonable cool. I hate sweating too much!! Mister Carter would love the autographed cap as bragging rights for his other Doggo friends. Cheers to Miss Lola too.

Here in Kazakhstan we have winter triathlon- run>bike>ski , it is usually -20/25 C. So, your arms and foods are frozen and you cannot move properly. So, “cold” European stars are perfect for me )
