Yes, I was a teen in the 80s and had been listening to Prince since his 1st album in 1979. There was a thing where people were 'Team Prince' vs "Team Michael'. I was 100% Team Prince.
love this. and love how he always supported women in the forefront in his bands, not just as backup singers. That's more common now but back then it wasn't at all. he was a groundbreaker.

That's the thing about Prince he always had multiple versions of his song. There's a more soft rock version to this song as well, i think there is even a jazzy version. He would do that with 99% of his music.

glad you pointed out the reason he changed his title back in the late 90s, back then there were industry folk who tried to make it look like he was just this goofy artist just trying to get some publicity when in reality he was indeed making a point that he did throughout his career about artists rights in terms of controlling their own content, how its used, keeping the money they earned. really is a interesting story going back to his beginnings convincing label executives as a very young person he was going to write, produce, and perform all the music in his first few albums....pretty much unheard of anyone doing this or having the talent to do this. Just proves the level of his talent was unlimited
And many artists have come out and thanked Prince because what he did actually changed contracts and artists now get much better deals & have more control etc. It wasn't for attention or a stunt, for sure.

I heard Prince's version for the first time probably 25 years after Sinead's, and was adamant that it was actually Sinead's that was the best version. But Prince's has grown on me so much. You're right, 'grandeous' is the right word. Its got great pomp.
Would love to see you react to more P. 'U Got The Look' is a JAM. And 'Do Me, Baby' is, ahem...somethong else. But tbh, theres a whole years worth of non-stop react-worthy songs of his. He was an absolute superstar, but its a pity that most seemingly only realised once he was gone (myself included)

He recorded the original version in 1984. After he passed the estate made a music video for it with clips of him and the Revolution rehearsing. It sounds pretty different from this version.
