    Very nice "organic" sound with those heads, a lot less bright than the clearer heads.

    Echoes of the drum sound on Pearl Jam’s ’W.M.A.’ Around the 2-minute mark. Love it! I use Skyntones on my regular toms, but have always fancied Roto toms after seeing Queen’s Roger Taylor use them. Would never have thought to pair them up! Great vid 👍

    Best sounding roto tom heads I've heard. NICE!

    Great sound! I dig the way they look, too.

    These sound great! Currently I have Renaissance Ambassadors on my set (6-18) and like the warmth. I mainly use my rotos for classical music (where specific pitches are called for).
    I might try Fiberskyn Ambassadors though, particularly on the larger rotos. Think they'll work really well on the 16 and 18.

      @@danthefugueguy Ooh, yes. Rotos with Fiberskyns make sense for classical. I think that’s what I used long ago when I was doing classical stuff. I don’t think I ever tried the 16 and 18. Whatever head you use on those, I’m guessing the challenge is to get the pitch relatively low without the head becoming too flabby. I have trouble with that when incorporating a 20” pancake gong drum (which has a very shallow shell) with my regular set.

      @@schmargle yes getting the lower range is a challenge. My 18" can get down to very good E2 (bottom string in a guitar) with the Renaissance Ambassador. Definitely enough tone. I think the Fiberskyn being slightly thicker might help beef up those lower notes. But as you say it can be difficult if you start getting rattles at such a low pitch.
      I have a second set of 8/10/12/14 and am thinking of the normal CS Dots for the classic roto sound. The Colortone heads are interesting too though (2-ply); might buy one and see what it sounds like as well!

    Yeah. Sounds quite similar to frame drums. So this will be great for a folk or tribal sound. Don't think I'd use it as my main tom sound. But defiantly a good add on.

    I prefer the tone to the standard clears, the downside is the bubbling that'd occur with heavy use.

      Interesting-I've never had that bubbling. But maybe I retire heads sooner.

    How did you mount those?!

    • @schmargle
      @schmargle  Před 4 měsíci

      I use RIMS mounts. That way I can position them like regular toms. To me, the straight Rototom rack is too limiting. The downside of using RIMS is that you lose the ability to tune them just by turning them. But if you add a nut to the bolt down near the bottom, you can still tune them by reaching under and turning the clamp/lever thing.

      U can also use a Tama boom holder with a 3/8 carriage bolt, a flat washer and a nut. I have a 6 inch -18 inich ( 7 rotos total) on a rack system. I also have (2) 18 inch rotos for bass drums but they don't have enough bottom. I have replaced those with a 20 inch bass drum

      With this method of mounting, they can be tuned by turning them as if they were mounted on a roto Tom black slotted rack
