Lin tells the story of being on his first date with his wife (Vanessa) while in the middle of writing In the Heights. He called Tommy Kail afterwards to see him all about the amazing girl he met and Tommy told him to “hang the phone the f**k up and write the Benny and Nina song, right NOW!” …and that’s how “When you’re home” was born.

In the original Broadway production, while Lin played Usnavi, Christopher Jackson played Benny, so Lin got him to play the ice cream man. The actress who played abuela Claudia is the only actor to reprise her role from the stage to the screen.
Super fun fact: In the original “In the Heights” on Broadway, Lin-Manuel Miranda played Usnavi and Christopher Jackson was Benny 🥰 so they passed the torch but still had cameos, you gotta love it!
Also, Abuela Claudia is the abuela we wish we had 😭

The little girl running around during Breathe is supposed to represent a young Nina I think, at home and at peace in her city while she grows up. Contrasting with who she is now, feeling like a failure and so far from her home. Love this movie!
I could be wrong (so feel free to correct me), because I haven't rewatched in a while, but my assumption with Abuela not taking her meds was that it was a matter of med rationing. Try to spread the meds out to make them last longer because of the cost. We already knew that money had been tight (the whole scene with the dry cleaner).

@@MoviesinDepth in the lyrics of one of the songs (i can't remember which one or if they cut the lyrics in the movie,) usnavi says that the paramedics declared that "her heart gave out" because of "a combination of the stress and the heat... why she never took her meds, i'll never understand"
it can be assumed that she was either spreading the pills out bc of the cost, or she was just plain stubborn and thought she was tough enough to go without them

This is probably one of my favorite movie ever. I’m Brazilian and live in Brazil, musical theater it’s not a big thing here like it is over in the US. 99% the musicals we have are translations, and in the state I live in is almost impossible to have stage performances for theater, so all contact I have with musical is through movies and I loved In The Heights so much.

The little girl represents the younger version of Nina and yes this and crazy rich Asians were directed by the same person
One of my favorite subtle character details in this film, is the moment Abuela makes the choice to move on, .....she takes the stairs instead of the ramp.

The actress who plays Abuela Claudia played the part all through the show's run on Broadway. She dos the singing voice of Abuela in Encanto.
Lin spent like nine years on this before it made it to Broadway.
the actress playing abuela is the same one from the original broadway cast! she's incredible. overall i think the film is good, but they made a lot of changes to the story that i wasn't really a fan of. i liked that they gave more character to usnavi's cousin, but they got rid of some songs that i don't think they should have. for example, there's a song that nina sings after abuela dies that makes me cry every time. you touched on the fact that she practically raised most of the block, and that song really goes into more depth with that. nina also still has a mom in the stage version and she has an awesome song during the dinner scene. i have no idea why they got rid of her character tbh. overall, i think you should definitely listen to the OBC soundtrack. maybe you could even make a video about it? discussing the differences between the stage version and the movie? i'd love to hear your thoughts about the changes that were made :)
also, another little fun fact, the guy running the laundromat is the actor that plays hades in hadestown!
The actress who played Abuela was also the singing voice for Encanto's Abuela. (Not the spoken voice, but all the sung parts).
yes! i LOVE the musical, and I like the movie but I felt like some of the changes were unnecessary and detracted from the overall story (and the few lyric changes felt really unnatural to me but maybe that's just because I'm used to the original versions lol)
They probably cut all that to keep the movie at a reasonable length. How much longer is the stage version?

The actors said it was freezing on the day they filmed the swimming pool scene. But it sure looked like fun. Have you watched the live performance of “Come from Away” that ones really good if you haven’t.
I'm pretty sure I spent a good 5 whole minutes freaking out over Patrick Page's cameo (the old man talking to Abuela Claudia). He played Frollo in the stage production of Hunchback and is currently playing Hades in Hadestown.
I’ve been waiting for this reaction since this movie came out!! The entire soundtrack is a straight bop! Also Sonny might be my favorite character…he’s just so funny!

Also, more deep diving into the Lin Manuelverse: Abuela in this film, Olga Merediz is not only the same actress who played the role on Broadway, she's also the same lady who voiced Abuela Alma in Encanto. :)

@@rjenyawd i think sometimes actors don’t feel comfortable singing or their singing voice doesn’t work well enough so they get a separate actor for it. i think all the other characters are the same actor the entire way through
@@larry5466 oh yeah, I know. A lot of musical movies do that. I just think it's weird Disney cast it that way for this one role and not the others. Like....why didn't they just cast Olga to play Alma altogether? It makes me wonder if there was any casting drama there. I know Lin originally wanted to play Bruno.

Just letting you know, but I believe the little girl running around the block is a kid version of Nina based on the photos her dad has of her in her office and home.
i think as a fan of the broadway show i struggled to get behind a lot of the changes they made bc it lost some of what made it so special and heartwarming. they butchered abuela's role and character in the movie compared to the musical, and olga merediz deserved so much more than that, bc i feel like some of the impact of abuela's death is lost due to her lack of screentime and cutting of a few songs and stuff that showed her closeness with usnavi - and it's mainly the way they reveal abuela is the one who won the lottery that lets it down for me. it feels so tacked on at the end compared to in the show, when it gets revealed abuela won the lottery during 'paciencia y fe', which happens after 96,000 and not when she dies like in the movie. the audience reaction is great when the reveal happens, I've seen a couple bootlegs and it always feels like such an important moment.
and the thing that pushes usnavi to stay is a mural of abuela claudia on the grating of his store, not of his parents home.
idk, i enjoyed the movie for the most part, though - and i get some sacrifices had to be made to make the switch from stage to movie but it just felt a bit incomplete and some things pushed to the side to make room for other stuff. sorry, i'm rambling, i wanna say so much more but maybe i should just do an overdue review of it to get all my thoughts out on it because it will forever frustrate me.
west side story and in the heights were filmed at the same time and since both take place in NYC there was a point where you could walk from one set to another (there's some vids of lin doing this haha)

This is pretty much my favorite musical and I tried so hard to like the movie but I just don't like the changes they made. The movie is still okay, but I feel like the musical plotlines/chronology make more sense. I do still think the movie is good overall though (aside from one casting choice but not gonna name names there)

I love & respect Lin so so much, but the stage play was far better than the movie, proof is the pudding as they say, the stage play won 4 Tonys, with 13 nominations and the movie didn’t get any nominations at all for any type of award 🤷♀️
The stage version is better but awards mean jack shit lol, especially when they knew nominating the movie would invite more of those ridiculous “colorism” claims all over again
