  • The previous two months of work have provided a practically brand new old engine! This thing had better work, or I'll have to push the Bus to music festivals this summer.

"Recycling as much of the vehicle as possible. Operating under the principle: Restoration by Repair not by Replacement. Eliminating waste and maintaining originality." Pure poetry, brother. Think I'll make shop sign with your quote.

Thank you very much for that great message! The current project, the NSU Prima, is a real pain in the @#$* to keep original, but I won't let it beat me!

Well I, for one, appreciated the freshly zinc plated brake servo pipe bracket. Great work as usual 👍

Thank you for the great comment, Hunter! Engine is still running great. Now, as for the steering box, that's possibly the next vid!

Very nice job, thoyou missed a couple oil seals. Namely, the oil dipstick tube to the case dipstick tube seal, the O ring on the fan and oil fill tube. Otherwise, very nice engine. I have a 914 csse in my '72 Bus, and I love the way the engine loves to rev up. No problem keeping up the speed except on really steep hills.

I did indeed change those seals as well, you can catch them in some shots. I haven't shown everything I did to the engine, 'cause that's just 'Vansplaining'!

An easier way to remove the pilot bearing from the rear of the crankshaft is to just stuff white bread into the hole using the clutch alignment tool. The bread dough will force the old bearing out. Only takes a couple slices of white bread to do the job. Use only the white bread, no the crust.

These videos are AWESOME! I very much enjoy your process - I have a recently acquired VW Westfalia that I'm getting back running. Question - the black funky-shaped seal that goes between the alternator front and alternator tin, is that your old one from disassembly? They don't make this anymore and I need one. How did you acquire yours?

Thank you very much for the kind comment! Yes, that seal is very important. You have several options there. If you DM me, I'll pass you a link or two.

Another great video! Such meticulous care. It makes my engine work look decidedly amateur. Are you a professional mechanic?

Thanks a million, really appreciate the comment! I'm sure your engine work is sweet, you know your stuff. Nope, not a professional mechanic... just an interested hobbyist!

Thanks, Jillian! The key is in the prep. I ground away all the corrosion then got them plated within two days of going bare metal. Can you DM me please, I'll send on the details.

Same case, but the oil fill tube is attached at the back right bottom of the case, and the dipstick is on the rear, whereas the 914 case has the dipstick next to the oil breather opening up on top, and you fill the oil thru the breather box.
