Our hope is that this video will reveal what poaching does to our wildlife, how poaching punishments have changed over time, and help you get into the mind of how poachers access your property. I got two autographed book from Charles, talked to him on the phone, such a nice man.
For all you guys that completely missed the whole concept of all Charlie’s stories here it is. We and he knew outlaw hunting wasn’t right, didn’t matter how hard you worked or who’s butt you kissed you were not getting an opportunity to hunt these ranches. These were cattle ranches that could care less about deer at or until the latter part of his outlaw career! Wether or not you choose to believe it or not, a bunch of the land “acquired” by these land owners was claim jumped and/or stolen originally. This guy killed around 75 deer in 22 yrs… That’s off of around 1/2 million acres of land! I have managed deer ranches and we killed 200 to 300 deer off of them in one season legally. I didn’t want poachers killing my deer either so I understand. Here’s my question to you…. Who was hunting, feeding, managing the deer he killed? No one was! He was damn good at what he did and basically only got caught because he wanted to. He was killing deer for his own gratification and wasn’t hurting no one. Believe this, if he would’ve been a mediocre outlaw hunter they would’ve shot his ass in one of them ranches and never told anyone. What if one of the land owners would’ve just invited him out to shoot a trophy??? I bet it woulda been much different outcome. Trophy deer hunting is a rich mans sport and always will be! I’ve worked for enough millionaires to know. Bunch of them consider them targets and nothing more! I’ve worked for guys that killed more than a dozen bucks over 160 inches and never ate a bite of deer meat! Does that make them right because they got money??? So y’all get off your high horse thinking you better than this guy. He is a legendary deer hunter and did it for the love of deer and nothing else. He coulda hunted a circle around you and me and we would’ve never known he was there! I didn’t say he was right I said he was a legendary deer hunter! Peace out!

@@chrishenicke2052 not bad at all. Well put. I was a Trooper in my state and worked a case on a couple of brothers that killed a lot of big bucks in my county. When I say my county, I worked it, and I grew up here hunting it, and those two shit birds couldn’t hunt, this dude knew what he was doing, and I’d love to hang out and hear some more stories!

It’s pretty rich to make claims of the land owners as thieves themselves. You have no such proof. Yet, you float this claim as a defense for this criminal.

I’ve known many great hunters in my lifetime and not one them was a poacher.
Furthermore, if a landowner doesn’t trust you to hunt their land then there’s probably a good reason for it. I’m positive that if you came to my ranch and asked for permission to hunt that, within a minute, I’d see right through your b.s. and tell you to leave.

As far the land in south Texas, you need to do some research slick. Nonetheless, I am a good hunter, I have killed more deer than anthrax and that ain’t including other game. There’s all kinds of heinous crimes that go on in the world everyday and you act like this guy is some hardened criminal. Game wardens even had respect for the guy! This guy needs to make an audio version of his book, and he needs to narrate it. He’s got an awesome voice, and he’s extremely good at telling his story.

There’s all kinds of guys in prison who could tell you the same stories. Just like this guy, they don’t embellish their stories at all and all the stories are true. Every one of them. You should go to prison so you can be a better story teller yourself.

This guys a hoot, Ole timers! my friend's dad was a Ole New England bandit. He hadda pilots license. They useta fly up to Maine from Connecticut back in the 60' & 70's with wheel ski combo landing gear Cessna or something in the late fall winter. He had a basement loaded with giant racks, never measured one just meat hunters that slayed huge bucks. Not so today with all the tick born diseases & moose. Great interview! Captivating stories. He's spot on about those game wardens that use that badge to gain access to premier hunting properties. 👍🏻🇺🇸

Your calling in life was to be the best deer hunting guide ever!!! Then you would have had access to all the beautiful country down south!
Always ask permission, you never know, I have about 7 acres of mostly hardwood, surrounded by a lot more woods and farmland, friends who live in Utah own the house they grew up in and about a 85 acre farm with a small irrigation pond, mabe 50 acres are for row crops. Both places are absolutely full of deer, I caretake the farm and have given permission to 3 people to hunt, one went mabe 4 times, other two never went, don't ask me. Gave permission to a guy that buys lead from me this year, he couldn't believe it, he went last weekend and shot two, said when the sun came up they looked like ants in the cotton fields.
There was a man in Ohio that spent his time hunting poachers. True story. He finally got in trouble himself for a citizens arrest. He of course was not a deputy etc. He waited for a well known SUSPECTED poacher and he was. The problem….he allowed the man to come back to his truck which was his second trip…he came out looked around to make sure it was clear than went back for the two heads, nice bucks. When he came back and loaded them, this guy came out put a gun on him and said, you move and I’ll shoot you. He had a shot gun with buck shot in it. They did arrest the gentleman for illegal hunting and poaching and huge fines and jail time. They also arrested the poacher hunter for holding a gun on him and threatening to kill him. He said that he laid across the road from the guys truck for seven hours waiting on him to come out. He had helped arrest four different guys who were poachers over a 12 year period. He quit doing it after he got in trouble. They told him that it was illegal and that he was not a police officer and he could get killed. He said he already knew that and he spent two tours in Vietnam going after the enemy so he was well aware of the danger involved. He was a quiet guy I guess and he was retired and never bothered anybody but what happened was he had a big old bump on his own property that he fed for several years and thought he was beautiful and didn’t want him to be killed. The poacher killed the buck. He started hunting poachers.

He is spot on with his opinion of Ronnie Brooks the game warden. He once watched my dad shoot a buzzard from the road when he was a young man. He wrote a ticket and searched the truck. Dad had a little sack of smoke and Brooks poured it out and never said a word about it. On the other side of the spectrum there is wardens like Jim Lumberg, former Cooke county warden, that pulled us over when I was about 7 years old. Told me I would probably be a good kid if it weren’t for my last name. What peace officer tells a kid that??
I couldn’t agree more man!!! I was lucky enough to live around a game warden who did his job, but also treat people with respect, and give every hunter the benefit of a doubt…. He wouldn’t lie or treat every hunter he came across like a suspect like so many other games wardens I’ve came across… I mean seriously so many wardens today are just itching to write you a violation even for the smallest thing, instead of a warning, a little information, and a chance to correct it… But if you get caught again doing the same thing , it will not be good for you next time at all!!!!
I really admire a good game warden when I come across one…. 9 times out of 10 people will reach out to a game warden like this than the warden who goes strictly by the book thinking he’s all that, and can do whatever he or she wants to because they have a badge and a little bit of power….

Larger land tracks enable better monitoring and control. Through QDM, culling, and oversight, the herd is much better managed. I could listen to this guy talk forever. His detail to his stories, his knowledge, it’s beyond everyone else. This guy has probably forgot more about deer hunting than most of us know. No one is spending 27 days out there. Charles is a true badass. Definitely going to have to read the book.

Great story telling! I understand totally. I started bow hunting in the late eighties in southern Illinois. Back then, not many people now hunted and we pretty much had free range on property. It was all legal but then more people started bow hunting and more people started leasing ground. Now I’m restricted to about 100 acres that I can hunt. And it’s not one parcel.
Great to see another podcast with Charlie. The man is a hunter. It's a shame that people bash this man, or anyone like him. I've listened to and watched every podcast that Charlie has done, multiple times. Simply cannot get enough of the man and his stories.
Hunting is hunting, regardless of what wildlife agencies or lawmakers determine is 'legal' or not. At no time in human history did any of our ancestors care about the 'ethics' of hunting. Concern over time of year, time of day, quantity, or the methods used to take game was simply non-existent. Humans have always used any and all methods available to kill game. Driving entire herds off of cliffs or into pits wasn't frowned upon by the spear and club crowd. If early man had access to firearms or artificial light (they did hunt with the aid of torches, by the way) they certainly would have used them.
Only recently (past couple of centuries or so) have people started to try and apply some sort of holier-than-thou philosophy to what has always been inherent to us.
Don't try and fool yourself with the "they hunted for food" or "natural predators don't kill for sport" nonsense. There have been documented cases of numerous species of predators, globally, that partake in 'surplus killing'. A radio-collared male mountain lion was tracked by a game department and killed 26 deer over the course of 7 miles...in 12 days! He fed only on the first two.
It is called INSTINCT.
You cannot stop a predator from hunting. You cannot turn your back on your heritage.
We are predators. We hunt. Some of us do it better than others. Some don't do it at all. Those that don't are the ones who are fooling themselves. Those are the ones who are 'wrong' or whatever other words people try and apply to this man, or those of us like him.
There is nothing 'wrong' about killing game. There is nothing 'wrong' about doing it in places where game is abundant. What IS wrong is people feeling like they own the game on this planet, or even the land the game lives on.
I'll let you in on a not so little secret: Nobody owns the game or the land. The game is native and you're just renting the land.
Want to kill some game? Do it. Do it so as not to put another human life in danger, but other than that there's no rational reason not to. There are only obscure and ridiculous 'illegal' reasons not to. If you feel otherwise, that is sad and pitiful. A wolf will hunt. A sheep will be eaten. A sheep dog is irrelevant.

My neighbor was a warden. He caught one of the night vision crossbow guys. He was shooting deer for the judge of all things and had to let the guy go. He had been after him for years!

I knew similar men, they hunted with rifles during bow seasons and shotgun seasons and never read a no trespassing sign. They read them as "hunters welcome" these old boys are long gone and were doin this pre trail cam days. They just considered it huntn. Wild stories

This man sounds so much like my grandfather we will set around the table at a family gathering and he will talk for hours of stories of the good ole days before they treated poachers as if they have murdered someone but he has hundreds of these same types stories it’s very interesting LOL

I’m getting the book! I think a lot of people being honest have done some shady stuff and when get older reflect and laugh , but this is top level stuff! I could listen to this man for hours and hours. He isn’t bragging and admits it’s wrong and he was just a deer hunting machine. @@williambray7876 no he should be judged and shunned from the hunting community, there’s a difference between accidentally killing a deer or even poaching a deer or two but poaching over 100 deer is not something we should forgive him for. Not to mention, majority of the deer he just cut the heads off and left, which is a lot worse than poaching a deer. He’s also not sorry, he may say he is but he’s lying, he’s laughing while telling his poaching stories, then he’s also trying to make money off him poaching by getting a book deal. It also gives fuel to the anti hunters when all these “hunters” support him and buy his book, you guys are making all us real outdoorsmen look bad.
At 32:44 poaching is not the half of "what's wrong with it". Unless i missed something, he's leaving the carcasses of multiple deer on the ground to rot or feed the coyotes.

This is very interesting....towards the end....he made me feel good about me and my hunting style...ive been fortunate to hunt some good property...lol..nothing compared to this.. Midwest farms...120-150 acres...but I'd sit all day..I can't tell ya how many times ...ive sat daylight till dark...dozens of times....id only hunt when the wind and time was right...and I have 21 LEGALLY killed bucks lol !!! Most are bow kills...

I like some of his stories though. I had many chances to shoot the biggest bucks in my area just wasn't legit at the time for me. I hunt river bottom whitetail bucks and love every minute I'm out hunting. Note there's eyes out there everywhere now days. 😂

His stories are great! I think it's important to keep this in perspective though, he ditched his wife and kid and he cut the heads off of these deer leaving the meat to rot. I suspect that if we had more insight into the rest of his life you would think twice before you glamorize this man.

I think when we get older and wiser certain things don't matter as much. I remember 25 years ago I wrote on a card that had different questions for some work place thing, the question was...What is your near life goal? My answer was kill a big deer. I got married. Had two daughters. Killed some nice bucks over the years most with a bow. Biggest one is in the 120's probably. 25 years ago I would have been jealous of this guy. I hear about all these big deer and it does nothing for me. I sit in my assassin stand about 600 yards in. I see some deer and fox squirrels. I get excited every time I hear one coming. He said he is ruined...He is. Because the old saying fishing ain't catching is true. It's the uncertainty that creates the moment. The pulse quicken. What's coming up behind me. Maybe it's that 100 inch buck I've been chasing. Sigh it's just a yearling.
Agree 100%. This guy had to break the rules to get big deer. Any hunter knows how hard it is to get ANY deer (without bait), while following the rules of the state. I’d rather not know what Im hunting than screw up my spots with 15 cameras.
This man is the last of a dying breed. Not just as a Hunter. He’s got very good morals and a deep respect for life. He’s very open about who he is and isn’t scared to tell it like it is. Y’all gotta realize what he means when he said “the good ol days are gone” this was a time where it was what they did for fun. It was their life and they lived it the way they wanted. I respect that and see nothing wrong with following your dream

I was born in the wrong time in the wrong place. I dream of adventures like this, living in the wilderness days, weeks on end, there is nowhere east of the Mississippi to go out like this and you can't do it out west anymore unless you got deep pockets and want to pay a guide. I'm very thankful that he's took the time to put his stories together for us to hear. What a life he lived.

Feudal lords have monopolized hunting making it very difficult for the poor to hunt to feed their families like they used to.
My dad and my uncle Paddy, during the 60s,70s, 80s, and early 90s, poached an average 5 deer a year from estates throughout Scotland, constantly at odds with and being sought by the police, Ghillies, and Highland gamekeepers, their escapades only came to an end when my dad passed away in 1996, uncle Paddy continued poaching salmon in local rivers until his death in 98, but my cousin Ronnie continues his legacy and still poaches salmon today, may poachers never cease to keep gamekeepers on their toes.

@@mtguy234 yes, I think it is, it shows that my dad and my uncle or not some mindless office workers who did the same thing day in day out just because that's what they were told to do, they were men of their time in a different time, so yes it is something to be proud of...........

Blind to his own hypocrisy. Such a waste of meat. Horns are for ego. Don't get me wrong, like a big rack and older critter. These deer hanging in some goofs cave who has never got his boots dirty. Credit: This guy is a great story teller. I give him that.
