Breencast 05: Collaboration
Vložit
- čas přidán 9. 04. 2017
- From Half-Life 2. Voiced by Robert Culp.
It has come to my attention that some have lately called me a collaborator, as if such a term were shameful.
I ask you, what greater endeavor exists than that of collaboration?
In our current unparalleled enterprise, refusal to collaborate is simply a refusal to grow-an insistence on suicide, if you will.
Did the lungfish refuse to breathe air? It did not.
It crept forth boldly while its brethren remained in the blackest ocean abyss, with lidless eyes forever staring at the dark, ignorant and doomed despite their eternal vigilance.
Would we model ourselves on the trilobite?
Are all the accomplishments of humanity fated to be nothing more than a layer of broken plastic shards thinly strewn across a fossil bed, sandwiched between the Burgess shale and an eon's worth of mud?
In order to be true to our nature, and our destiny, we must aspire to greater things. We have outgrown our cradle. It is futile to cry for mother's milk, when our true sustenance awaits us among the stars.
And only the universal union that small minds call 'The Combine' can carry us there.
Therefore I say, yes, I am a collaborator. We must all collaborate, willingly, eagerly, if we expect to reap the benefits of unification.
And reap we shall. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Probably my favorite video game villain. Someone who is so dazzled by the promise of knowledge and the rewards we might reap from it, that he makes himself blind to the reality of the suffering and destruction that his actions are bringing to the world. A man who spews endless bullcrap with actual sincerity. It's fascinating.
Yeah, really shows how the Combine are using him as their puppet
What is he suppose to do against a intergalactic super species? He is trying to preserve the little that he can of humanity.
@@bluemamba5317 I came to this conclusion after closely analyzing breen's nova prospekt speech, and you can really see him trying to save humanity's existence. I completely agree*.
@@bluemamba5317the main thing is that I think he’s fooling himself, as the Combine will render Humanity just one more synth in their arsenal with the path Breen is taking, indistinguishable from extinction as far as I’m concerned. At best, he contributed to human survival by delaying the Combine long enough for humanity to become capable of driving them off Earth and creating a satellite network capable of walling us off from them.
The kid who reminded the teacher about the homework:

I love these lines. It's not that far from something you'd hear in IRL propaganda. There are absolutely people who would nod their heads and go "hmm, yes" to this, if it wasn't presented by a videogame villain.

someone once pointed out that "hide the pain harold" is a real life version of breen, I hadnt been able to unsee that for a while
Valve used real models/actors for the faces, so there actually is an identical real life version of every Hl2 character. The one for Breen is named Roger Guay.
But Dr Breen, what sets us apart from the animal kingdom is our ability to distinguish a useful adaption from a detrimental one. What would take evolution a million cul-de-sac’s to get right can be solved with one deliberate decision from a human. Who are you to say that collaboration with the Combine is the analog of the lungfish, and not it’s cousin that went extinct 1 billion years ago?
Because the Combine could just as easily make the entire human race extinct? What is this question?
Also Dr breen committed crimes against humanity along with the combine
The clearest example of this is how in a mere handful of decades, the last two of which were spent under the most brutal occupation imaginable, humanity has made more advances in teleportation technology than the Combine have seemingly made in their entire existence, having gone from a pre-atomic species to localized teleportation in less than a century, and in a seemingly more efficient manner than the Combine could manage when working from a much better starting position. And with that, it seems entirely plausible that humanity can bar its universe from the Combine thoroughly enough that the only chance they have of re-invading now seems to be to try and set off another Resonance Cascade! At best Bremen’s collaborationism was an unintended delaying tactic, something that bought enough time for humanity to make the needed advances to gain a decisive edge over the Combine and Freeman to return.
Which begs to question why they haven't. And even if slavery is better than death, humanity as a whole still doesn't benefit from this. Breen is the only one who does.@@exu7325

Trilobites were one of the longest lasting species in the planet’s history. It is not the complex creatures that last the longest, it’s the hardy and simple ones.
I believe that could also be central part of the point Breen is trying to make. The Trilobite has no ambitions beyond survival, and will expire with the Earth. Humans, or so he says in his propaganda, are destined to rule the Stars as a Member of the Universal Union, as something greater to outlive the Earth itself.
In a way, he's using the Trilobite's simplicity and stubborn resilience as a mean of belittling it near Humanity's potential and the Combine's might. And knowing Marc's writing style, both views are prolly right.
At least that was my interpretation.
@@peixeserra9116Maybe, though if I was able to speak with Dr. Breen I’d like to ask him, “whose future are you fighting for, ours or theirs?”

Ok seriously though, only Wallace Breen is benefitting from it. That is our problem, Doc. You are kind of a prick for making us kiss their ass.
Damn, sometimes this game is *really* on-the-nose about it's underlying messages. The term "collaborator" was used during the second World War to refer to people, organizations, and nations that willingly co-operated with the Nazis. I think the writers were deliberately trying to draw that connection.
I doubt it, considering in the Beta, the conscripts were based off of Isreali soldiers.
@@arelr6822 considering how the IDF is treating Palestinians right now, I don't think it's unfair to compare the two. Plus, this could have been written/recorded/whatever after that idea was scrapped
@@MxSlfDstrct I see a lot more communist influence if anything
@@arelr6822 Well, of course there's a heavy soviet aesthetic - the game(s) take place in eastern europe. However, Dr. Breen's role in the story is very similar to that of the Nazi collaborator - a member of an occupied populace (France, Poland, etc/Humanity as a whole) that assists the occupying force (The Nazis/The Combine) for their own personal gain.
@@MxSlfDstrct Perhaps, but I find their politics too different to apply it.
I feel like Dr breen is the good guy in this
He's a mixed guy..everybody is
True
Survival of humankind is not guaranteed by the Combine as Breen thinks it is. Don't they use other species as soldiers? Yes, and other species are much more stronger than humans. Combine trans human soldiers we saw in the game are very weak compared to other species like Striders, Gunships or Advisors. So one day Combine could decide humans are useless and kill them all within hours. It's not wise to surrender without a fight. As we saw in the HL2 Episode 2 humans actually managed to close their portal for the first time. So if all Combine units on Earth are defeated, Earth will be liberated. Whether they can open another portal or not is still a mystery though.

Bremen is clean
Honestly you gotta admit is that it's better to side with the combine rather than risk the entire species being wiped out. It is irresponsible to think that the universal union wouldn't see our talents and willingness as a species as inspiring. It's like they basically gave us a 10000 year head start as long as we can be trusted.
Breen made the right choice at the beggining
But at the cost of our resources, our humanity, our children. If thays the price then whats the point of living?
@@orangypteco8858 Who cares about children, resources and humanity. We expunge subjective things like love, instinct and feelings. The entire point of universal union is objective science, knowledge and technological advance. Advisors have reduced their bodies and minds to minimal forms so they don't bother with such useless primitive things anymore, but focus on universal colonisation and scientific development. If earth had not created better teleportation method than combine, 7 hour war would be 7 hour extinction genocide. They have given us hope and chance, become immortal to remove procreational needs, host bodies to remove basic biological needs. And then you have ignorant uneducated rebels fighting against progress
@@Equii88 I mean, they aren't gonna put down the shields. They're just waiting for humanity to die a slow eventual death. Best case we might get all turned into Stalkers, but that isn't ideal.
I'm surprised there are actually people in the thread here who support a tyrannical race of beings who commit genocide on a daily basis, while stripping everything away from what it was, in favor of their own perverted interests in technology.

You'd willingly be stripped of your humanity to become a transhuman slave for the Combine forces? How naïve... but I suppose it's understandable considering how convincing Dr. Breen's speeches are, yet they are never immune to critique or opposition.
@Josef Stalin Farewell, former human. May you find any happiness whatsoever as a slave under the Advisors.
If you manage to _maintain_ your humanity however, I pray you do not betray the species you were once part of. Mankind will live on, no matter how much the Combine will try to exterminate them. (Also, don't pretend I won't shoot you down if you end up a traitor.)
@Josef Stalin Not so resourceful or appreciative of humans, though. Needing to pass through Xen (and depending on local transportation when they arrive on Earth) instead of having it as a dimensional slingshot, you know.
