One of the smartest shows of the 70s. Great cast, good storylines and a terrific opening theme number on par with the James Bond theme. Loved watching this show back in my teens!
Even Peter Graves himself expressed his disgust about how Jon Voight played Phelps as a traitor. They asked Graves to reprise his role for the 1996 movie, but turned it down when Jon turned the Phelps character into a traitor. Martin Landau told MTV in a 2009 interview that having Brian De Palma kill off Phelps' latest team leaving Tom Cruise the survivor, and Landau was against it. Landau states that 'Mission' is a mind game, not a action-adventure game. Landau passed on the movie, and said the script wasn't very good either.
What has happened to good shows like this? It had a real plot, was funny at times, suspenseful, everything one could ask for in a show. Can someone please bring back television like this to actual television, not pay as you go streaming services.
"This USB drive will self-destruct in 5 seconds..." If Jim Phelps continued the mission today and used current media. R.I.P. Peter Graves (1926-2010), great actor.
Some of the best TV ever. Truly incredible music and acting.....the best. No-one will surpass the brilliant Peter Graves, aka Jim Phelps, and his team.
This is the real and only Mission: Impossible. Good times watching this as a kid. I can't believe that people who watch the Tom Cruise garbage are completely oblivious to the existence of the (much better) original.
Wow, amazing -- I had recorded this exact same opening during 1972 and put a lot of stuff on that cassette tape from television and radio, playing it over and over again -- then to find this "Premiere Kurkoska and his daughter, Anna," clip all these years later out here on CZcams is simply fantastic. "Good luck, Jim."
During my college years I spent one summer on the campus. The ladies had one TV. On Sunday evenings we scooted into town ( 4miles away) to go to the Dairy Queen. We timed it so we would get back just in time to see the match lighting the fuse!! We didn't miss Mission Impossible!! I bought one season... Sure wish one of the channels would show it!! 💥💥💥
This was a great show and it won a bunch of Emmys. They had good writers and most of the espionage and infiltration ideas the team used were really well done. Unfortunately, Paramount got cheap in the 5th season and started phasing out the international missions because there were more expensive to make.
What international missions? They never left the United States to shoot that so-called international missions. This was revealed by Peter Graves himself.
@@witkamp6619 Many of the missions were international. The team would often go to foreign countries for their missions. Of course, since they never left the United States, they had to build and/or dress sets to make the locations look foreign, which is probably what the OP means. Just because they never left the country doesn't mean the show wasn't expensive to make, so don't put words in other people's mouths. Besides, the reason Peter Graves gave for Paramount phasing out international missions is that young people complained about the Vietnam War, so Paramount decided that interfering with the affairs of other countries wasn't nice, so starting in Season 5, they had the IMF facing American gangsters.
When I was a kid, the opening tape sequence really helped me understand the plot. In shows like Man from Uncle, although cool within its own framework, it was sometimes hard to understand the storyline for me at such a young age. Granted, Uncle got sillier as the series aged to appeal to youngsters, but MI could maintain a solid adult audience while having the kids right there and glued on those weekends.
The voice on the recording always said "Jim, your mission, *should you choose to accept it...* I always wondered what would happen if Jim Phelps or Dan Briggs ever declined to do a mission.
Brian Tim If the mission wasn’t accepted, they would simply shelve the episode. More often than not, the B-team which accepted the assignment were caught or killed. The government would never acknowledge any association with team members, but did do several prisoner exchanges.
Come to think of it, the Paramount should be able to resurrect Mission Impossible TV Series as the third one in near future. I also heard Daniel Craig's retirement on James Bond's biggest role. If that guy could BE a new main actor, it will be amazing. With PPK still on his hand like Bond from before.
2:05 Hold the phone!!!! THE...LEONARD NIMOY??!!! Used to watch this show just for the self destruct, now I have to watch it for Mr. Spock himself! Even without the pointed ears, you can recognize him right off.
Nimoy replaced Martin Landau in season 4 as the "master of disguise". (Landau and Bain left after season 3 following a contract dispute. ) He only stayed for 2 seasons, because the production team was going through changes of its own, and he (Nimoy) felt he wasn't being given enough to do.
They should never have tarnished the Jim Phelps character by making him the villain in MI:1. Big mistake, and unnecessary, too. It would've been just as easy to make the villain not Phelps but someone who mentored Phelps, for example, and was legendary in the IMF, someone who all IMF members knew and respected. That would've kept the Phelps name alive and also not incriminated him into the scheme of villainy from which the name is now forever linked. Sad.
Totally agree. It's an insult to the character and pretty much invalidates the entire 7 year series. These movies that are made from old TV shows almost never do the original series justice.
I agree that it was a real kick in the balls to make Phelps the villain, but I'm almost positive this was done by Hollywood so they could rid themselves of any baggage from the TV series, thereby allowing Tom Cruise (Ethan Hunt) to take over as the lead character. Like so many other blockbuster films (particularly those dealing with spy action), Hollywood feels that the film won't get butts in seats if the lead role isn't young and attractive
I always separate the classic TV series from those bogus movies. The Jim Phelps of the television series and the movie Jim Phelps aren't the same person. I was disappointed when I saw the first Mission Impossible movie and the second one was worst than the first one. Those movies are the classic example of leave well enough alone. How would tom Cruise have made his fame and fortune if MI had flopped? Peter Graves and the tallented cast of characters and the writters and that iconic music has made Cruise his own Bond.

One of the smartest shows of the 70s. Great cast, good storylines and a terrific opening theme number on par with the James Bond theme. Loved watching this show back in my teens!
60s. Started in '66.
Greg Morris walked out of the cinema when he saw that Phelps was a villain in the first Cruise film. This clip is one reason why.
Even Peter Graves himself expressed his disgust about how Jon Voight played Phelps as a traitor. As a kid maybe 8 years old watching this it always freaked me out when they did the thing with the rubber masks.

Peter Graves,a great friend from Buffalo NY
Jim Phelps the legendary IMF leader
Who was forever Disgraced by The 1996 Movie
There is wisdom (Graves) and youth (Cruise). DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO. Also Mr. Graves team was INFINITELY SMARTER!!!!!!
Ethan doesn't have a team that thinks. Phelps did.
Watch Ghost Protocol. Ethan is smarter
@@strikerbowls791 I very much doubt that.

End of the World. Which would have shortened up the run of the show. A lot.

When "Get Smart" lampooned the Mission: Impossible tape scene, the voice adds "Should you decide NOT to accept it, you're fired".
Its cool that tv show series episodes missions impossible and movies use stage illusions ideas concepts

The TV series is far better than the movies!
The movies are more like Ocean's 11.
Agreed, I'm tired of today's garbage movies. TV shows are still OK, that's where the creativity is.
