Did you know that Kenny Gamble worked with Daryl Hall when he was making his bones in a Group called The Temptones named after The Temptations and his Alma Mater Temple University. Hall & Oates like Gamble & Huff met in an Elevator in 1962. They wrote "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" that was originally done by Dee Dee Warwick (Dionne's Sister) and "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston which was her only Hit at Motown. In The UK, their Music is still heard on TV Series, Soaps, and "Cover Versions" Jimmy Somerville did his Version of "Don't Leave Me This Way", Simply Red Covered "If You Don't Know Me By Now" as did Rod Stewart on His Soul CD, Ricky Gervais as David Brent covered the song as well and his former Co-Star Stirling Gallacher sang a snippet on the UK Soap Opera The Doctors. A lot of Philadelphia based Songs have been covered by UK Artists.

Great, great stuff here. Something that I've often thought about, and maybe some of the posters here can shed some light on it for me. Most of the male dancers on the show during this time were I'm assuming in the 15-20 years of age range. In spite of the good times, and good vibes, was there a lot of, or for that matter, any trepidation, anxiety, or foreboding among the guys, particularly the older ones, about what was going on Vietnam, when there was the possibility of being inducted once they turned 18? Again, love the videos. It's wonderful being able to watch this stuff, with a greater appreciation of the music now, as opposed to being a little dusty, musty, and rusty kneed and elbowed 8 year old who only heard the music, never listening to it.

This song is real soul! Great classic footage! Great choice of thumbnail. Later 70s AB did not show the dancers getting up from their seats to start dancing; they were already on the floor. I am sure the dancers shown here (and since then) were at some point prompted to not continually watch themselves if they are being shown. The good taste cameraman is zooming in on one beautiful girl (who the good taste YouCanDanceToit! used for the thumbnail) and gave her an unusually long 22 seconds, from 2:09-2:31. Near the end you can tell she is pleased and surprised she is getting so much screen time and closeup even.

    • @beachbum433
      @beachbum433 Před rokem

Hey Bob, greetings from a Land Down Under.
This thumbnail hooked me into watching many YCDTI! videos.
I believe the girl you mentioned at 2:09 -2:32 is Kathy McInerny.
She appears in another YCDTI! clip posted on 10 November 2019, American Bandstand, airdate 7 October 1967. She appears at 3:10 in that particular clip titled: AMERICAN BANDSTAND: THE ASSOCIATION:"NEVER MY LOVE." Interestingly, on both clips, slide your cursor along the timeline at the bottom of the clip & the words "MOST REPLAYED" pop up. Never seen that before...
What got my attention was the girl in the thumbnail is an incredible likeness of Julie, who became The Light In My Darkness some 40 years ago.
Except Julie, 16, in 1967, had a "pixie" haircut, dark blue eyes, and charming freckles. Same killer smile as Kathy, though.
I was 24, and she was WAY too young (cue Gary Puckett's song "YOUNG GIRL"), and she was way, way WAY out of my league.
Interesting how life works however, our paths crossed some 40 years ago, her freckles had faded & she was even more gorgeous.
Cue 2 more songs for my life's soundtrack: Lindsay Buckingham's "TROUBLE"; and Irish singer Finbar Furey's "SWEET SIXTEEN".
I mourn for my lost youth and those far off days depicted in those YCDTI! videos. I used to be a reasonable athlete & used to go surfing, rather than pursue any sort of meaningful career, hence my nickname.
I get a lot of enjoyment from watching the dancers from back then: Famous, Dancer Don (when I 1st saw him, I thought he was a young Carl Wilson from the Beach Boys!), Dr. John Pollard (quite a character??!!), Peggy, Ken & a few others.
Very sad to learn that some of them have passed...
I'm not all that mobile these days, (my 16 year-old granddaughter recently told me she'd slap me VERY hard if I told her one more time I used to run sub-three hour marathons), so I have plenty of time to scroll through the comments after I watch the videos...
Well done, whoever puts together this amazing stuff!!!!
      Thanks for the memories!!!!!
      Best wishes from OZ.!!!!

The message I get from cursor on timeline is “Pull up for precise seeking.” Yes the Kathy footage in this clip makes me smile every time. I liked a Julie in high school too, but it didn’t work out. I can relate to what you write about someone too young and out of your league but with a super smile; I’m just confused by one word in where you wrote “our paths crossed some 40 years ago, her freckles had faded & she was even more gorgeous.” I mean didn’t you mean your and her paths crossed some 40 years later, not ago? Kathy’s smile thumbnail for this clip is just perfect; I hope YCDTI reads this, too. I know that Lindsey Buckingham song and I think I have all his solo albums as well as most releases by other people related to Fleetwood Mac. I have on record or CD others’ recordings of “Sweet Sixteen” but had not heard Finbar Furey’s great version I just checked, thanks. I was not much of an athlete, and not a surfer at all, but have plenty of Beach Boys and some surf music in my collection. One of my friends in high school was an American Bandstand semi-regular in the early 80s. She was big on Led Zeppelin / classic rock, so when they played anything related to that she really got into it, for example I videotaped Pete Townshend’s “Face The Face” being danced to and spotted her. Dick Clark asked her, ”What kind of name is Llyswen?” And she replied “It’s a Welsh name.” Great you recognize dancers and know some names from further back than I recognize them. I live alone and have no children or grandchildren; I wanted very much to attend my high school reunion last year but it didn’t work out. Sorry about your mobility issues; I have balance issues and I know I need to not be a fall risk, living alone here, like my mother was in her last years when I was helping her. Thanks so much again for the nice and entertaining read! Feel free to let me know again of any you think is particularly nice footage in this site or a site like AB Dancers on youtube. Best luck and health to you, have a great weekend and take care! Best wishes from the California Bay Area! :-)

@@bobdavis4848 G'day Bob, thanks for replying!
You seem like a pretty good & decent guy to have looked after your Mother in her last years. As an elderly (like: my age!!!) friendly American from New York said to me when we were on our Hawaiian cruise about 6 years ago: "THIS GETTIN' OLD SURE SUCKS!".
Sorry about the confusion regarding the "40 years ago" bit. I'll try & clarify it.
Remembering that Julie was 16 in '67 & I was 24, we drifted very far apart & married other people. Both our marriages were disasters.
Her STUPID ex-husband cheated on her & my ex-wife became violent & abusive after she'd had a few drinks. The less said, about that, the better!!!!.
Maybe that thing with the cursor on my computer is a reflection of how much I replayed those clips of Kathy McInerny. I got a few screen shots of her & I was able to do a comparison with her & my Julie.
Ah yes, 40 years ago...Christmas 1982, I reluctantly attended a work Christmas party, & by some strange, weird, unfathomable chance, Julie happened to be there, complete with her 1980s big hair & killer smile.
She actually asked me to dance.
I had a dance with her, and of course, once again, I thought she was WAY out of my league. So I left the party quite early.
A couple of days later, she rang me out of the blue, at my work, and we've been together since then.
One of the songs on the radio back then was Lindsay Buckingham's "TROUBLE", which became my theme song for quite a while.
Rewind to 1967, Julie used to come into my work to deliver stuff, and I was totally smitten, reduced to a jibbering idiot. What this feeling was, has been defined as LIMERENCE. Google it, Bob, & you'll get a sense of what I used to go through.
      Totally irrational...???? You bet!!
My Old Man had PTSD from the Pacific War &. his ill treatment of me as a kid resulted in me having CPTSD. The "C" standing for COMPLEX.
"Limerence" can be the result of abuse and/or lack of affection during childhood, according to a psychiatrist who is currently trying to help me.
During the 50s & 60s, I always envied young people living in the US. We didn't get TV in this town until 1959, & when we did, we had a terrible Oz version of Bandstand.
I remember in the early 60s, the Beach Boys being on the Oz Bandstand, & drummer Dennis Wilson saying he thought this country (Oz) was "pretty backward".
      It certainly was!!!
I think we've caught up a bit now, however...
About 6 years ago, I did a long overdue surf safari to Hawaii. We went to all the famous beaches. It was amazing, as was Pearl Harbour.
We still owe a massive debt to the US for having our back in the Pacific War. I think you guys still do have our backs. There is no way we can look after ourselves in this current crazy, screwed up world.
It always was my intention to travel to California to visit all your famous beaches some day.
However, I've had a few heart issues recently & cost of travel insurance precludes any further overseas travel.
So I have to content myself with checking the Live Cams on CZcams every morning.
I really would love for some-one who puts these YCDTI! videos together to know just how much simple folk like me enjoy their amazing work.
I'm still working my way through the YCDTI! videos, and the comments. I did try to contact some-one called Jean Lankton, a regular correspondent, who lives in Kentucky, and "talks" to people like Dancer Don, Peggy Names/Waggoner & one or two other former regular dancers on AB, but she probably thinks I'm some sort of internet weirdo...
Take care of yourself, mate! I wouldn't mind staying in touch, but I don't do social media.
      Best wishes from Aussie...!!!

@@beachbum433 BB ’43 (that rhymes)…G’day, G’week, thanks very much for the very interesting detailed reply! Oh I was glad to move back to help my dear dad in his last years and then my mom in her last years. I have other regrets regarding things I wish had gone differently regarding them and my aunts and uncles who are all gone, but I wasn’t going to let that be one of them. Oh I loved Hawaii in 2001 and my parents loved it decades earlier; I’d play Hawaiian music for my mother. Thanks for clarifying about the 40 years ago thing. Yes I think we did and do live in societies, in Oz, US and elsewhere, where even if “nothing happened,” a 16 year old female and 24 year old guy dating would be frowned upon and sometimes ostracized. But by ages 26 and 34, not so disapproved of. I actually rarely choose to ponder anyone’s age but I know others love talking about ages. I don’t buy into ageist societal stereotypes, I don’t weight shame either. Sorry Julie and you married the wrong people at first. I never understood cheating. Hahaha, I suppose it likely won’t be long until I get the same message when I replay YCDTI / AB Kathy McIerny clips, too. Great you got screenshots and could compare her and your Julie, especially if Julie didn’t mind! You have to always tell Julie she looks EVEN more attractive than Kathy did then, haha. Lucky you did end up going to the Xmas 1982 office Christmas party. Otherwise these days you might be saying goodnight to an enlarged printed Kathy McIerny screenshot taped to the wall above your bed instead. I’ve never married; I live alone for the last decade plus. Someone Elyssa gorgeous who by chance I met at a restaurant a few years ago acted very interested in me and I thought she might end up the one I’d waited my whole life for. I bought her an Xmas present and stuff to show her but after two restaurant visits where she paid for both and disappeared, and emails stringing along, she never sets up a day for us to literally meet for a third time even after I asked her when I could finally give her the Xmas present meant for 2019. I’m planning on writing her a long email finally, asking what she really wants. I feel like a college behavioral studies science project. She took a photo of us together during the first part of first talk, photographed CDs that were with me (including Midnight Oil) and last time she wrote me said “…I would be down to hang out one of these days. Maybe I can bring my fiancé and you can meet her as well?” I acted unfazed, said I’d be glad to meet them both and asked when, then no reply after over a month. Yes, I know what you mean about “Trouble”; I think I have all the Lindsey Buckingham solo albums. I looked up “limerence”; I’ve felt that too various times. I am sorry about your father’s PTSD and it giving you CPTSD. I’ve seen a variety of counselor and therapist types. If someone got mad at Dennis Wilson for calling Oz “backwards,” he could have replied like, “Did I say backwards? I meant backwoods.” I am glad you could have that long overdue Hawaiian surfing safari. Well I am glad the US had Aussies’ back and apparently still do. Growing up I saw Carmel beach the most here in California. My travel agent strongly suggested travel insurance due to Covid fears for next time. Which youtube Live Cams do you check? I hope Jean Lankton does reply to you and you can have some good talk about the dancers and history. Oh I still like handwriting friends. I don’t do the big social medias much, mostly since 2005 a six letter social media I fear my comment will disappear if I name. I’d be glad to hear from you again! It is a pleasant day here after early January storms including that blew a tree down onto my house and down a bunch of fencing. Stay safe, Bob

      Hello again Bob.
Goodness, such a lot to process!
An elderly Italian fried of mine who recently passed away said to me about 30 years ago: "GOD MUST HAVE BEEN DRUNK WHEN HE CREATED WOMEN".
His wife and lovely daughter were in the midst of a blazing argument, with dreadful language flying back & forth, & my friend was removing himself from the scene of the battle at that time...
Women can be truely delightful, beautiful & so on, but they can also be shockers.
Your story about Alyssa is intriguing, I wish you luck with that one...
I have had my heart shredded by one or two females. One in particular, sun tanned, blue eyed blonde, movie star good looks, the works, we were "going steady" when I was eighteen, when she got engaged to one of my Surf Club mates.
"Mate" is an Australian idiom for "good friend", in case you are ever curious...
In this "mate's" case, I SO intensely disliked him, I refused to attend his recent funeral.
I DID dodge a significant bullet with that young woman, however. She spread herself around quite substantially at the local football club as well as at my Surf Club.
It still hurt, however, quite a bit...
The CZcams sites I check while I'm having breakfast each day are: WAIMEA BAY LIVE CAM; LONG BEACH, TOFINO, LIVE CAM; HUNTINGTON BEACH PIER LIVE CAM; PACIFICA BEACH PIER LIVE CAM; BIG BEAR BALD EAGLES LIVE CAM; ZERO POINT: LEVI, FINLAND SKI RESORT; WHISTLER OLYMPIC PLAZA LIVE CAM". I don't snow ski, but I like to check the temperature at Tofino (Canada) and Finland. And of course, gloat.
The max temperature here today is going to be 38 degrees Celsius.
I also check SAN DIEGO LIVE CAMS to see what's happening in the area.
I know a professional Life Guard from San Diego, so, I'm a bit curious....
I have found a few other sites which display "MOST REPLAYED" on the timeline!!!
Bob, I swear, I have never visited these sites before!!!
One of them is "A WHALE SAVED MY LIFE" the MOST REPLAYED notification came up at the 4:15 mark..
Another is "MAN REMOVED HOOKS FROM SHARKS' MOUTHS". "MOST REPLAYED" appeared at 5:01 on that clip.
One or two others with the theme of people helping trapped whales or animals had the same result...
PHHFFEEEWW!! For a while there, I thought I was starting to look like some sort of a perverted old On Line Stalker with Kathy McInerny in my sights....
A lot of truth in the old saying: "NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER".
The girl, mentioned above who shredded my tender 18 year old heart looked like butter would not melt in her mouth...
Whereas, with young Julie, what you see is MOST DEFINITELY what you get.
When I look at these old YCDTI! videos, I wonder how the young folk are faring in this very different world, compared to the late 60s.
Some of the comments seem to indicate they are OK, apart from those who have passed.
One thing I would have liked to have told Jean Lankton, from Kentucky,: some years ago, she made a comment about Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones, wondering how he was still alive?
I saw the Stones in 2006 at a massive concert in Sydney, & managed to score a box seat, so I was quite close to the stage.
Keith's face looked like a dummy from Madame Tussaud's wax museum, which had been standing too close to a fire.
Almost melting, sagging & running down his clothes.
THE most decent of the Stones, Charlie Watts (RIP), the drummer, almost smiled a couple of times. Took his job VERY seriously!!!
In that group of musicians with all the temptations cast their way, he remained faithful to his wife (married in '64) and seemed a thoroughly decent and good human being.
Fun fact: Kieth Richards sang in the Westminster Abbey choir at Queen Elizabeth's (RIP) coronation in 1953...
He was 9 at the time...
Carmel? Is that where Doris Day lived, and Clint Eastwood was mayor???
Bob, please allow me to introduce my self:
      My preferred name is Gerry.
I live in a seaside suburb of Adelaide, the small capital city of the State of South Australia.
A fairly recent Australian Prime Minister described this place as: "THE ARSE (American Translation: ASS!!!) END OF THE PLANET."
      What a charmer the was...!!!!
      My email address is: ger101@bigpond.com.
      Hope to speak soon.
      Kind regards.
      Gerry.

Thanks for the background info on this song / group...Talk about blue-eyed soul...Never knew that that the group was white. Gamble & Huff sure had their fingers on the pulse of dance music: I've always felt that they were pioneers in setting the tone for the Disco 70s...I remember the AB dancers loved to dance to the Gamble & Huff tune, "Love Is the Message". Sadly, Aaron, my tastes for Saturday morning cartoons shows at this time were not as cool as watching The Fantastic Four, Spider Man or even the Beatles...I was drawn more to "Shazzan" and "The King Kong Show'" and of course, "George of the Jungle" LOL...Wouldn't be too much longer from about now that "Happening '68" would premier right after AB. They often would tape 3 episodes back to back, taking several hours in a single day, so the dancers sometimes needed a break or may have looked a little less than enthusiastic at times.

The problem is that the comments section on CZcams needs ALOT of work. There should be the option to get an alert when any comment is made to a video and not just for a small thread that the viewer comments on. This way, if you find something of interest and comment, anyone can read it. It's also not easy to PM or email someone who makes another comment as there's no drop down box next to anyone's screen name.
I find Facebook to be the least intuitive site around. The search feature is almost useless. If I link to a site, sometimes the post gets deleted without warning or an alert. If you link to a CZcams video, sometimes you can watch it in the box that appears on FB and other times it takes you to CZcams.
