  • Build custom composite panel gear garage doors for my expedition overlanding camper. My DIY composite camper's large gear garage will accommodate bikes, skis, paddle boards, kayaks and other outdoor gear. I built these doors from self-made composite panels as seen in my last video and GRP protrusions wrapping around them and mating up with the camper's GRP pultrusions and structural fiberglass parts glued into place. Many metal shapes are extruded but most fiber-reinforced plastics and structural fiberglass shapes are pultruded. Often people and I too interchange these words even like I do in this video though these are opposite processes.
    I recently built this Total Composites expedition camper on my Mitsubishi Fuso EarthCruiser CORE 4x4 expedition truck chassis, installed MAD expedition windows and skylights, and now framing out the interior cabinets for global overlanding adventures.

    Hello. My car is ready. When the time comes, I will record and share with you.

    Have you designed the bike mount?
    I’m really curious if you’re going to do a slide out tray or similar. If I build one of these me of my top priorities is bike storage without having to take off the wheels or turn the handlebars.

      Howdy. I am not going to do a slide out tray as it would add a couple of inches of height, so instead an adaptable/adjustable mount. I should have that going in a month or two and will share. In my van build, bikes could be installed with wheels on and bars straight, but space limits in this garage to balance space for the camper make best option to take off front wheels and turn them.

    Well done. 👍 Will you be adding a remote central locking system so you don't have to carry a bunch of keys or at least keying the locks all the same?

      Thank you. That is absolutely the plan, I don't want to have to use any keys to lock and unlock all of the cargo doors (still to come), the gear garages, the pass thru doors (x2), etc. Let know if you have any suggestions of remote locking products to use as I'm still reviewing options.

      @@vantripping I see them done on a lot of Australian rigs and other Expedition trucks but haven't heard of any brand names. 🤔

      @@livingworkingoutsidebox Yeah, I've seen them a lot on Aussie rigs too but not much here in the US. I've found some solutions that I can implement, and will share as I develop the system.

    Why didn’t you use the cut out piece from the garage for the door?

    • @vantripping
      @vantripping  Před rokem

      Good question. Because the cut outs are a little bit up and also they were cut out with holes saws in the corners, which creates some gaps in the corners. So better to make new panels.

    Extrusions ! 😂😂

      Metal is extruded but most fiber reinforced plastics and structural fiberglass angles and similar are typically pultruded. It's a pretty cool process to watch, and fascinating how many fibers are pulled thru the dies as the resins are being injected.
