He was in the It miniseries with Tim Curry, and had previously worked before with Alyson Hannigan in My Stepmother Is an Alien, a 1988 Kim Basinger scifi comedy that no one on this planet except me remembers. He was kind of the go-to child actor for dorky/abrasive kid roles for a while there.
I always think its funny some people seem to have a problem with Xander only seeing Willow as a friend when the same thing went on with Buffy only seeing Xander as a friend.
I always liked the episode more than most. interesting how the mummy's story parallels hers. Hello Seth Green! Love the callback joke where Xander asks if Impata is a praying mantis.
Giles' car is a Citroen DS - an innovative and somewhat weird car from the 1960s. Mostly known for its hydropneumatic suspension which gave it the ability to drive around on three wheels if you removed one.
Giles' car is a 1963 Citroën DS. I have a Buffy hot wheels version of it. They actually have a whole line of hot wheels for all of the main cars used in the series. 😊
Ampata is a sympathetic character and isn't a straightforward villain. Her story is really sad. And yeah, monsters being attracted to Xander is becoming a running theme 😂 This episode isn't hugely popular but the introduction of Oz is a highlight. Willow deserves somebody who is really into her. 🥰
Good reaction to this episode. You picked up on one of the themes of Buffy’s high school years, duality. The journey for Buffy is to be a strong emotionally mature woman. The high school culture forces/ or appears to force students into roles not who they are but how the culture views them. The theme of trying to be an individual true to yourself will be a struggle for everyone. Good job seizing on this theme. Emotions and words have no physical presence but like a supernatural force they can overpower people.
In the late 90's I took a semester abroad at the University of Oslo. At a dorm party there, I met a girl from Itally who spoke Italian, German, French, Norwegian and English. All flawlessly. Her home town was maybe 100 miles from both Switzerland and France. A rather significant portion of Europeans live within half a days drive from 3 or five different countries that all speak a different language. I can't dpeak for Sweden, but 95% of Norwegians speak near flawless English. The majority of Norwegian television is from America and England, and they do not overdub television in Norway. They subtitle it. So Norwegians learn english pretty early on just fron watching normal television.
You are blinded by Willows love 😂 I mean Xander doesn't owe Willow his love. He loves her like a friend and would absolutely never let anything happen to her and would sacrifice himself ( like he was willing to do here) and when he tells Buffy he will kill her if they hurt Willow when she got taken in Ep 1 of this season. So it's unfair to call Xander a dick because he doesn't reciprocate Willow's feelings
Willow did look so cute. One of my favorite character storylines in the series. Just wait for it! Is this the first episode of Jonathan, Danny Strong? No. He blends so well in to the background.
As a European, I do think that 2,8 languages as an average is correct. I studied both my native Swedish and English in school, as well as a third language. we were able to choose between French, German and Spanish. although I will have to say that during the foreign exchange program we had in High School with a school in Czech Republic, we had trouble communicating due to their level of english being 10 years behind ours. so It does differ between the countries. a guy named "Sven" however, would most likely be from the Scandinavian part, as you said, Viking. and that's either Sweden, Norway or Denmark. so yeah, He must have been studying English in school from the age of 8. (in addition, unlike Germany and other countries, Scandinavia does not dub our television shows. This leads to more exposure to the english language and thus a higher level of understanding.) ok, enough from me. Oh! is this Ozs first episode? cool! [SPOILER] I had to laugh at the note about Xander always finding the monster... considering who he "ends up with"
Loved this episode actually. I enjoy a villain that's layered instead of just purely evil. Buffy still strongly distinguishes between good and evil (humans vs monsters) and selfishness vs responsibility but it does add some shades of grey. Unfortunately, as you're gaining more viewers there seem to be more spoilers too. Hope you're not too bothered by it or will find someone to moderate the comments. Have a great week you guys! Glad you're enjoying the season so far
Seth Green was NOT in American Pie - you're probably thinking of Cant Hardly Wait. Also he was a childhood actor so he was in movies before that such as Cant Buy Me Love in the 80's.
I LOVE YOU GUYS. The after discussion was glorious, and the reaction at 12:00 was 'chef's kiss'. This is the joy at potential, maybe, hope so, love interests I want to see!!
Swedes do speak english. To me it would make sense that he'd play dumb in front of Cordelia to not have to deal with her and be normal around other people.
No one could or can predict the show. That is why you should grade on the 10% curve. If a person or group can predict more than 10% they are amazing. The premise of a blonde girl teenage vampire slayer was intended to subvert the expectations of the audience. Every plot, situation , and storyline keeps the original story in mind. One of the many reasons Buffy is a truly great show. You are right, it’s fun listening to predictions. They are similar to the ones I had when I was watching and now I just chuckle at how little I knew and how much I missed.
Can we talk about how Xander stepped up to the plate (as it were). We saw his progression from awkward starstruck dorkiness to genuine early signs of love to the pivotal moment of having to make a choice, and honoring his long-standing respect and loyalty for Willow over his own self interest. In fairness, Ampata's giddiness over freedom might have sparked her reciprocal interest in Xander. Xander might have intuited this in the end, and also seeing Ampata's wanton disregard for other lives recognized that as the ultimate deal breaker. He has also had experience with female predators.🪳
I always forget how slow moving even this episode faster moments are. It isn't a bad episode by any means. It feels like the difference in watching _Interception_ and _The Whale._ Both are great movies, but one moves slower than the other. This is how that episode feels, to me. Yes, that is Seth Green. He's been in acting since he was a little kid. This was literally just before he started getting noticed by people from movies. In other words, just before Austen Powers. I loved the no eyes as well. The nineties were all about no blood or sex, nothing wrong for broadcast TV. The difference between toxic and non-toxic jealousy is the difference between Xander's jealousy and Willow's jealousy. Plus all of a sudden, after breaking Willow's heart (don't tell me he never knew - not after episode one of the season) he just decides to go for Ampata instead of Buffy, who he's claimed to love and say he loves Empata. This is proving, to me, he's just a horny teenage boy who doesn't know any better about love than any other high-schooler, and hurts people in the process, emotionally speaking. I laughed at Joe calling Xander's hormones towards Empata true love. Sorry Joe. No dice for me on that one. They're high schoolers. They only think they understand love. It's really the only excuse Xander has at this point. And even it doesn't excuse how he handles certain situations such as, stated originally, how he handles his jealousy vs how Willow does, as she is a high schooler, also. Everything The Review Crew says about Xander concerning this situation is correct, including how the joking about it isn't OK and makes it hard to see him getting better, because in some ways he isn't getting better. Not realizing the Mummy replaced herself with Rodney: How many people don't realize that until Willow says something? This episode tries to makes us feel bad for Empata. I understand the victim as a backstory aspect, but it doesn't make me justify or feel bad for the gaslighting and killing she does once Rodney frees her. The camera being pointed at her before she woke up and knowing Empata's name lets viewers/fans know she used that information even before Rodney broke the seal. She didn't just fall for Xander and become sympathetic. The Bronze is an anyone can go club, but you still have to prove you can drink. The bouncer taking ID's in the two part was a change and not one that feels hard to see how in-universe head canon changes could work. I agree there is a difference between brutaly honest and rude. Cordelia isn't rude anymore, but her view of honest and what she deems as the truth is still not all right. Oddly enough, it's a step forward from S1, though.
The Bronze is a club. Alcohol is served at the bar, along with non-alcoholic beverages. Cover charge (when applicable) is paid at the door & anyone ordering alcohol gets carded at the bar. It's not a perfect system, but apparently they haven't had any issues with underage drinking. At least, they haven't had their license revoked. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
More likely they have to show their ID at the door and get a stamp that indicates alcohol allowed or not. Then they have to show their stamp at the bar when ordering drinks. This was how it was usually done at all ages clubs.
@@spamfilter32 Typically, yes... However *SPOILERS* In a later episode Anya is carded at the bar & we never see anyone with a stamp (or paper bracelet -- which was a thing at some for awhile). ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
@becca1189 Yes. Although that was a one-off. And of course, they did that for the shows' purposes, not necessarily to reflect how things happened at all ages clubs regularly.
Ok, apologies cause this drives me kinda crazy :P Why do people insist on shipping/wanting Willow to get Xander while we condemn Xander for not letting Buffy go? Xander has every right to "not see her that way" same as Buffy has the right to feel that way about Xander. Ok, rant done :P
Yeah the Incans spoke Quechua as their native language, which I know because I went to Peru last month. Lol. So Impata wouldn't have known Spanish necessarily. I remember this episode. I thought it was a decent one.
Remember that she was actually awake the whole time. She was probably on display for years or even decades in Peru, before going on a museum exhibit tour in the States. Could easily have learned Spanish...
Xander's "romantic history", to date: First time Xander thinks he's getting somewhere: hot teacher turns out to be a praying Mantis, and wants to kill him. First time Xander puts his lips on a girl's lips: giving Buffy the CPR, which isn't really "Kissing" per se, plus she's, y'know, dead. Oh, and her boyfriend is literally right there with them. First actual kiss: right here…and it nearly kills him. Plus "Ampata" later tries to finish the job, and he ends up with her severed arms clinging to his shoulders. Yikes.
Enjoyed your reaction guys. I like this monster of the week episode because of the Ampata/Buffy parallel, Willow looking adorable in her costume complete with harpoon (a wonder that was allowed into the Bronze, LOL), and of course the introduction of Oz. Still one of the lesser episodes of season two but by no means my least favorite. I also really like Xander for his loyalty, bravery, & most of his humor but yes he is also really off-putting at times like at the beginning of this one. Still I think his flaws help make him a really good character.
Shortly before the episode first aired, Joss told us Willow would be wearing a hot outfit. Giles drives an old Citroen. It was actually crappy. They have a hydronic suspension which lifts when the engine is running. There is an episode where crew members had to push the car. You can just tell that it is riding low.
Easy on the Xander slander, lads. Xander is deliberately written as the least sympathetic character in the main cast. At times he is simply a cartoon of a 16 year old boy...although, as a former 16 year old boy I could be pretty cartoonish. He was Whedon's bitter take on himself at that age. OTOH, he IS a 16 year old boy being carpet bombed by hormones and a socially awkward outcast as well. Xander and Willow have known each other their whole lives, and she got friendzoned early on and they're BFFs. But from our point of view, we see Willow transformed from her initial mousiness almost immediately into an extremely pretty girl, although very uptight and shy around boys. She gets prettier and more stylishly dressed by the episode, and her hair gets redder and redder. And of course, she's utterly adorable. Very shortly she will surpass Cordy's beauty(to the point that it takes plot armor to ignore it) and rival Buffy's. But to Xander(and the rest of the school) she's still the skinny nerd that's dressed by her mom who's seen the softer side of Sears. Along with counting the number of times that Giles is knocked out, add up the times that Xander saves the lives of Buffy, Willow, Cordy and by sheer courage and always showing up, the entire world. All without superstrength, magic, Kung Fu, special knowledge... or the least bit of suave. No other character comes close.
I’d also like to add that you can’t have character growth if you start your character as the perfect personification of all things. You mentioned this in regards to Willow but it’s true for Xander ,too. I just wanted to underscore that point.
They seemed to go out of their way to let us know that Willow and Xander are not going to happen so they can open the door for Willow and Oz. And Xander and just about anyone else who isn't Buffy or Willow, but bugs and demons are still a maybe.
Xander is a complicated character because he was used by Joss Whedon as a sort of self insert and a lot of his terribleness leaks through to Xander’s character that way. But he does still have a lot of good, likeable moments, funny lines, and charming acting. No matter how much his character develops and how much you like him, there will always be some moment of Joss Whedon self inserting himself into Xander that brings your opinion of him right back down whether it’s just for a moment or longer. He’s still a core character and has many things to be appreciated about him but the Joss Whedon insert can be very hard to deal with sometimes. As a result, opinions of him tend to be up and down even when that’s not necessarily the writers’ intention
I wouldn't say everything "terrible" about Xander is a Joss Whedon insert. Many males watching this show see an embarrassingly large amount of themselves in Xander's not-so-great moments.
You guys don't hate on Xander. He's just a regular guy, and he's funny! I wish he wouldn't mature and just stay funny forever. I think it's been like 30 years since that show came on. So I think he's aged a little bit.
Well at least you aren't setting expectations or revealing a character is going to be a major player. Hopefully, their reactions will be guided by you so they have the exact reaction that please you.
In Inca Mummy Girl we get introduced to Oz, definitely the coolest character in The Buffyverse. Nobody does laid back like Oz, his witty one liners and observations are brilliant throughout the whole show. When he says 'you're only interested in a girl who can walk or talk' reply 'she doesn't have to talk', the look on OZ's face. Inca Mummy Girl one of the weaker episodes of S2 Xander showing his complete innocence and gullibility. We all feel for Willow who at this stage in the show is so meek and quiet, always feeling looked over. We all seem to forget what an awful bully and generally horrible vacuous person Cordelia was, totally putting down Willow at every opportunity throughout the early parts of the show, we see that again here. The metaphor of the show saying basically looks aren't everything, and be careful as things are never what they seem. Jonathan gets a lucky escape here along with Xander also. Xander comes through at the end and saves Willow's life. Great foreshadowing again here with Xander and his 'taste in women'.

This episode really turns some of the plots, but while one of the underlying themes is to not be ignorant like Cordelia, the line where Buffy says "She was gypped" always makes me cringe. It's a slang term derived from gypsy, which implies gypsies take away from others. I don't know if Joss Whedon included it to create a dialogue or if it was just an oversight, but either way, I always feel the need to point it out. TLDR: Gypped is like the n word for Romani people. Don't say it.
even today, most americans don't know either that "gypsy" is a derogatory term, or that "gypped" was derived from it. i think the use in this episode is honest and ignorant 90's california girl speak, and not something intentional.
@@Emburbujada it's widely documented that, especially in the earlier seasons, a lot of the dialog is joss's no matter which writer got primary credit for the script.

My biggest problem with this show is there's so much I want to say and have to bite my tongue because it's all spoilers.

@@visarr I think they met through working on a commercial together, but stayed friends through out the last 40 years.
Definitely she would be hot in that outfit 😹
A Citreon is the Gilesmoile....
They seemed to go out of their way to let us know that Willow and Xander are not going to happen so they can open the door for Willow and Oz. And Xander and just about anyone else who isn't Buffy or Willow, but bugs and demons are still a maybe.
As long as they are all in non toxic relationships we are happy
I enjoyed the Spike joke.
Being a self insert character is interesting, he definitely just reminds us of being 16 year old boys
And now my third favorite character from the whole series is introduced.
Well at least you aren't setting expectations or revealing a character is going to be a major player. Hopefully, their reactions will be guided by you so they have the exact reaction that please you.
Will never be in favour of a Xander X Willow ship, no thank you

That was a good joke
the dude in the middle is so cringe with his xander slander.
Mate, there are so many spoilers in your comment, why would you do this?
@@fabianhebestreit3240 Killian has been spoiling on every reactor's channel for years now. People have asked why, but we've never received answers.
Its so funny seeing the Wilow simping 🤣🤣🤣
We love Willow
European's have languages; the U.S has accents. An Australian YouTuder, Patrol Nation, watched this video on Deep South accents czcams.com/video/Bl8ksfLfW6Q/video.html and couldn't follow what the people were saying.
There are over 175 indigenous languages spoken in the U.S. today. Add Creole & Cajun French to the mix. Not to mention many people of Chinese descent still speak the language (especially if they grew up in Chinatown), recent immigrants also speaking a myriad of languages.
Europeans, Scandinavians, Africans, Asians, & those from the U.K. have plenty of accents as well. Ireland has one of the most accents per capita in the world.

Joss didn't even write this episode XD

it's widely documented that, especially in the earlier seasons, a lot of the dialog is joss's no matter which writer got primary credit for the script.
@@sirmoonslosthismind Yep. And it's widely known that "certain" people will blame the one word they don't like in an episode on Joss...
@@Emburbujada
lol that's also true.
This one, IMHO is the worst of the season (although your mileage may vary) but I freely admit I don't generally like most "Xander centered" episodes.
I love it. Fake Ampata is really good.
My least favorite is bad eggs
*SPOILERS*
A fleshed out monster-of-the-week, Willow being adorable, the introduction of Oz? Yeah, I would 100% watch this over Bad Eggs lmao
Seth Green is the nicest guy and has a great memory. He met my friend for the first time and immediately knew who her cousin was as she was trying to set up a website for him.
