    Slow and stately, for St Martin’s grand acoustic. The rank of pipes shown is the pedal bourdon.
    The pedal reed is a 16’ Trombone - originally planned to be re-voiced to make it softer, but I like it as it is.

    the very warm sound of the organ and your slow and clear playing make this refrain pleasant to hear. Bravo

    Thank you for your inspiring videos of these lovely hymns. Although I'm afrikaans speaking (derived from dutch mostly), we use quite a number of these hymns in our church. The way you play these, with respect, feeling and humility, is outstanding. Greetings from South Africa.

    I grew up in a home where church was 5 times a week. I eventually learnt to play the piano and organ. Ben, you are AMAZING! You must get yourself published! You deserve much more than 20k subscribers. I have a hymn book that looks much like yours - AND it is older than me (58).

    May I also mention that the Pedal Trombone sounds magnificent and certainly should not be re-voiced to reduce the egress of tone. Some people have stupid ideas about organ specifications and tonal content .

    Well played! It's interesting that here in the States, there are some differences from what you're reading in the hymnal versions I've played. Mostly just in where the tonic and dominant chords fall though.

    Brilliant playing, as always, but there is a much better tune in The New English Hymnal at No 445.

    • @set3777
      @set3777 Před rokem

      The tune TOPLADY composed by the author of the song is used 75% of the time.
      Tune PETRA used in New English Hymnal at No 445 NOT popular and IMO NOT better.

    • @benjamindaniel8467
      @benjamindaniel8467 Před rokem

      @@set3777 Petra is used almost exclusively for this hymn in the Church of England. It is very popular in places where traditional hymns are still valued and, IMO, a _much_ better vehicle for the text than this jaunty number (which, incidentally, was composed by Thomas Hastings - NOT the author of the words!) Petra is extremely effective if verse 3 is sung unaccompanied, with the organ coming back in for verse 4 - building to a climax by the end of the verse. What I'd love to hear is some of the hymns being sung during services in this magnificent church.

    It is not American its totally British from reverend toplady stuck in a storm in a cleft of a cliff in Buringtome combe in Somerset not to far from Weston super mare , Bristol , cheddar where proper cheese is made not the yellow stuff our colonial cousins think is cheddar. Toplady sheltered there in the storm and its said he wrote this hymn so sorry Americans its British through and through but we will let you borrow it from time to time
